FREE Romance Series Starter!Britt woke up in Jack’s glorious arms. Jack…whatever his last name was. She hadn’t a clue who he was. Kicking her way out of the sheet, Britt got to her feet and clutched her head instantly. It pounded like an unsuccessful road construction project and her teeth hurt, actually ached from the hangover. Stumbling to the bathroom with annoyance, she drank water and took a … took a shower and drank more water, chastising herself for letting it get this bad. She knew to drink water and take aspirin before bed to help curb this hideous feeling. She needed a full breakfast, something big. But she was stuck with this guy who thought it was socially acceptable to hang out after a one-night stand. Britt didn’t have any experience with a one-nighter except that time in college with the one guy in her women’s studies class, the one with the tattoo of a hard drive motherboard on his chest. That hadn’t ended well but for sure he had at least had the courtesy to leave her dorm immediately afterward. Were they supposed to have breakfast together? Bond in some way? She had work. He had…probably the unemployment line or guitar practice or something. Mainly, she needed head-space to get ready for her day and try to forget what she’d done the night before, namely some guitarist whose last name was a mystery better left unsolved. The guy was HOT! But she knew she would never see him again. Or would she? So I’ve come to learn that Accidentally Married to the Billionaire is a sequel to this three part of The Boss’s Son (thanks for putting them in the wrong order in the Romance Collection by the way). This was obvious for one, Marj was in this book as well as Britt with her already HEA in Accidentally Married to the Billionaire. For two, these two books were extremely similar, in fact so similar that I could use the exact same review for both books if I wanted to.
Just as in the book with Marj this one lacked personality, that being that it was kind of a surface story. Sure, I got explained to me who the characters were and how Britt tried to live a day by boring day life with no excitement, but pulled towards and obsessed with Jack and the wildness he brought forth. Other than those explanations though, It didn’t dig any deeper. The story was very much driven by dialogues, almost to the extremes, and therefore showed very little emotions, thoughts or feelings from the characters. This made the back and forth from Britt’s “forget him” to “I must have him” very out of nowhere and very repetitive. In fact it just gave me, the reader, whiplash without any more complex or deeper reasoning behind the constant switcheroo of what she decided.
It also didn’t help that the story didn’t have anything more to it than their relationship and sex. There were no big plot or any real conflict to be had. It was basically her getting dumped, picked up a guy, went to work, met guy there, date and romance with her whiplash decisions thrown into the mix as the only conflict to be had. I mean, she was dumped and cheated on by her ex which I guess is a conflict, but the story didn’t really treat it as such or impact her personality or the relationship with Jack in any way. Don’t get me wrong, there were sweet moments and some charming dialogues to be had as well as some twist and a bit of drama with them meeting again, but that was it in the plot and characterization department. That’s why I can only call this a surface story, because neither plot nor characters had anything more deep or complex to offer.
One thing that really bothers me which I have also mentioned in other reviews and will keep doing until I read all books or until this changes. And that is how disingenuous and misleading the author’s strategy is with her books, releasing three parts of the same story and charging all of them individually as one entire book each instead of each a third of a book. It’s so sketchy and reeks of greed for money that I can smell it a mile away. That is also the reason why I won’t continue on reading this book. It is unreasonable and also quite disrespectful of the author to expect her readers to pay trice as much as one book should cost just to read the book to the end. Unless the price of part two and three gets lowered this will probably be it for me with The Boss’s Son.
