Sophie Scaife almost ran away once, trading her ticket to college for a ticket to Tokyo. But a delayed flight and a hot one-night stand with a stranger changed her mind, putting her firmly on track to a coveted position at a New York fashion magazine. When the irresistible stranger from that one incredible night turns out to be her new boss – billionaire and publishing magnate Neil Elwood – Sophie … Elwood – Sophie can’t resist the chance to rekindle the spark between them… and the opportunity to explore her submissive side with the most Dominant man she’s ever known.
Neil is the only man who has ever understood Sophie’s need to submit in the bedroom, and the only man who has ever satisfied those desires. When their scorching, no-strings-attached sexual relationship becomes something more, Sophie must choose between her career and heart… or risk losing them both.

The Boss by Abigail Barnette is a perfect book for anyone wanting to try the BDSM genre, at least it was for me. The main characters Sophie and Neil used the sub/Dom dynamic as “play” during their sexual interactions and they were able to turn it off outside of the bedroom. I loved the characters perspectives of the BDSM lifestyle. It was themed with trust, safety, and communication at all times.
Although Sophie and Neil’s sexual relationship is initially a focal point in this book, there are other elements brought into the story that created a well-rounded book that isn’t just sex. My only complaints involve the age difference between Sophie and Neil, along with their boss/employee relationship. I should note that these issues also are mentioned several times between the characters and they were not comfortable with them either, but their chemistry and attraction made them helpless apparently. The overall story was pretty predictable in my opinion, but I enjoyed the read anyway. These reasons are why I chose 4 stars instead of 5. The Boss was a great book overall. I was invested in all the characters in this book (there are lots of secondary characters, along with some side stories going on), and I remained engaged in the book until the last page. It does end on a cliffhanger and I immediately purchased the next book The Girlfriend which I will be reading immediately. If you enjoy adult romances with a BDSM element then take a look at this one!
I really enjoyed this
By chance I picked this book up right after finishing another romance set in the world of magazine publishing. Since that book was great I nearly pit this one down again. Pleased I didn’t.
I haven’t read FSOG so the references to it in this book were lost on me. I like that the story is completely told from the heroine’s point of view, and that she isn’t a doormat. No big surprises in the plot, but it was written with wit and intelligence and I enjoyed the journey.
I’m not a fan of cliffhanger endings, but I do have the next book ready to go so I’m not going to whine about that here.
Very highly recommended.
A sendup of Fifty Shades as written by someone who knows what she’s doing (and wrote a wonderful sporking of the entire Fifty Shades trilogy). Just a few ways you know you’re in good hands: the heroine shuts down a co-worker’s fatphobic comment in the first chapter. One of the first sex scenes is her masturbating in her bathtub to thoughts of her boss–she’s very clear about what she wants and the story serves her pleasure; she’s not a blank slate for the dom to write whatever he wants on. But I picked this book up specifically for the dom, who’s bisexual. I have a rule that every time a ‘phobic Amazon reviewer says “What woman would want a man who’s been with a man?” I answer “THIS woman” and buy the book. I have no regrets.
Sofie and Niels story gets you hooked from page one! Makes you fall in Love with what society thinks is wrong, and turns it into the fact that love is love! Could not put down!
Goodness! This book could give Fifty Shades a run for it’s money. And the ending!!! Can’t wait to read the next in the series
This is what 50 Shades of Gray should have been.
Wow, just wow. This is (awesome) smut for smart people. When I read this book I felt like I was reading my own words. I hope Abigail (Jenny) and I become author friends because if our style of writing is any indication, we would get along famously!
This book is funny, hot, and relate-able. If you like smart, driven women and anatomically-accurate sex, then you’ll adore this book. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
The Boss was a great first book in this six part series. My attention was captured very early on thanks to Neil and Sophie. They meet again after their hot as hell one night stand six years ago. Now he’s her new boss. He enjoys D/s in the bedroom and Sophie enjoys letting go of control. Neil makes her enjoy sex like never before. Their chemistry was insane. So hot and their scenes together almost lit my iPad on fire. I just needed more story cause I felt like not much happened. The story revolved around them hiding their casual no strings relationship and them having sex. Yes, the reader is introduced to Sophie’s amazing roommate Holli and Neil’s daughter but the story halted a little bit for me. Still I’m going to read the next book cause I’m so damn infatuated with Neil. He made my knees go weak numerous times and don’t even get me started on that ending
I love these books by Barrette. They are a little kinky, very sexy, and realistic. It’s a topic I’m usually not interested in — older man, younger woman — but Barrette makes this work. I was rooting for Neil and Sophie from the first pages and love them in each subsequent book. They also make me laugh and think.
