“Abbi Waxman offers up a quirky, eccentric romance that will charm any bookworm…. For anyone who’s ever wondered if their greatest romance might come between the pages of books they read, Waxman offers a heartwarming tribute to that possibility.”–Entertainment Weekly
The author of Other People’s Houses and The Garden of Small Beginnings delivers a quirky and charming novel chronicling the life of confirmed introvert Nina Hill as she does her best to fly under everyone’s radar.
Meet Nina Hill: A young woman supremely confident in her own…shell.
The only child of a single mother, Nina has her life just as she wants it: a job in a bookstore, a kick-butt trivia team, a world-class planner and a cat named Phil. If she sometimes suspects there might be more to life than reading, she just shrugs and picks up a new book.
When the father Nina never knew existed suddenly dies, leaving behind innumerable sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews, Nina is horrified. They all live close by! They’re all—or mostly all—excited to meet her! She’ll have to Speak. To. Strangers. It’s a disaster! And as if that wasn’t enough, Tom, her trivia nemesis, has turned out to be cute, funny, and deeply interested in getting to know her. Doesn’t he realize what a terrible idea that is?
Nina considers her options.
1. Completely change her name and appearance. (Too drastic, plus she likes her hair.)
2. Flee to a deserted island. (Hard pass, see: coffee).
3. Hide in a corner of her apartment and rock back and forth. (Already doing it.)
It’s time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn’t convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It’s going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.

This book was such a cute and easy read. It was like sinking under a warm duvet. Nina is every book worm so you relate to her instantly. She’s also hilarious and so are her friends and family. I smiled the whole way through this book and will defo be reading the author again.
If eating ice cream or throwing ice cream snowballs sounds appealing, like me, you can probably see a bit of yourself in the bookish Nina Hill. I laughed out loud while reading this book. I kept reading snippets both funny and identifiable to my family.
Nothing about how her life turns out is realistic, but it turns out just as a book nerd wishes their life might!
Awesome book
Love this book! The writing is unique and funny, the story is entertaining, and the characters are quirky and a little weird. All in all, an entirely enjoyable read if you’re looking for something light and fun. Plus, the heroine is a book lover, and who here can’t related to that?
April’s book club pick was, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, and I loved it! I listened on audible, and the narrator has a soothing, relaxing, and pleasant voice. Every time I listened to this story, it felt like slipping in to warm comfy pajama’s with my favorite hot tea or coffee. It just felt like it took me to a relaxing, calm, and happy place.
This story is told by the main character, Nina Hill. I related to Nina in so many ways. Like myself, she was an introvert that would much rather read a book than socialize or do anything else. She worked at an independent bookstore, (talk about a dream job,) and had a very small close-knit group of friends. Nina loved working on her planner, (another favorite hobby of mine,) and enjoyed participating in multiple book clubs, and weekly trivia nights!
When the absentee father, that Nina had never met, passes away, she learns she has a huge family. Fun, humor, a little bit of drama, and a whole lot of chaos begin to take over Nina’s life. She also meets a man from her trivia nights, and Nina has to decide if she wants to take a chance and make room for all of the new people in her life!
If love enjoy cat’s, (Nina has an adorable one), books, trivia, romance, and stories with big boisterous families, you should check out, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill!
Nina Hill is obsessed with books. I think we’re all little (lot) like Nina. Absolutely all the feels with this book. Great read!
Nina Hill loves her life- she has a great job at a bookstore, is in a winning trivia group, and has a companion in her cat Phil. Nina is a structured and ordered person and lives by her to do lists! Suddenly, her ordered life is upended with the appearance of family members she didn’t know she had. Can Nina rewrite the story of her life with this new family and possibly a little romance? Read this charming book to find out!
The story held my interest and the book was well written even though I found it to be a bit slow at times.
An absolutely delightful romp through the typical and, in this instance, the not so typical journey to “happily ever after.”
Waxman had me anxious to turn the page to see what Nina would do next and in many instances, laughing out loud. Nina and her world is full of wonderful adventure and quirky characters – the kind you would like to call friends.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill was utterly charming, relatable, and filled with laugh-out-loud moments. I suspect many readers will see parts of themselves reflected in Nina. This is one of those books that I had read in two sittings which is an accomplishment when you have a toddler. I found Nina’s story to be engaging; filled with colorful characters and behaviors that reminded me of myself and people I know.
I enjoyed the narrator’s voice in this book. While very similar to Nina, the narrator truly seemed like a character in its own right to this reader. I found the random switches to Tom’s, the love interest, perspective a bit jarring at first. It was cute to see Tom’s side and how equally flustered he was with his interactions with Nina. Their romance was truly adorable. Their trivia adventures had me laughing out loud.
I enjoyed the familial aspect but expected it to be a bit more complex. I wish we had more instances of Nina interacting, or avoiding interacting, with her newly found family. The ending wrapped up a bit more quickly than I would have liked but I still absolutely adored this book and plan to reread it before the end of the year.
*I voluntarily read and review an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The book nerd in me was so happy to read this novel! I loved following the quirky heroine, Nina Hill, and enjoyed all the literary references. Though this book meanders through Nina’s life, I enjoyed the world and other characters so much that I didn’t really mind. I appreciate Waxman discussing the topic of anxiety as well and the effects it has on her life, including all her relationships. (Also: Thanks for naming Fresno as the raisin capital, although Selma also vies for the title.)
A book that I thoroughly enjoyed!
The characters in The Bookish Life of Nina Hill are believable and engaging. The quirky third-person narrator kept me turning pages; it felt like I was sitting with a dear friend in a coffee shop, hearing some benign but juicy gossip. Highly recommended for a rainy weekend or a day at the beach. Or, frankly, any old time.
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill – Waxman
THE BOOKISH LIFE OF NINA HILL by Abbi Waxman was just plain fun. I enjoyed Waxman’s writing style. Her characters were engaging and oh so flawed, completely and wonderfully human.
Nina’s life was just how she wanted it; there wasn’t anything she would change, except, maybe, growing up with a father. She always observed, wondering what she was missing, but she didn’t lose sleep over it. An introvert who loves her books and the orderliness of her life, is thrown when her father’s lawyer comes looking for her. Her father died and left her something in his will. That was shocking enough, but finding out who her father was had consequences: a whole family that required some sort of interaction from her. There’s also the cute guy from trivia who shows an interest. Suddenly, Nina’s surrounded by people who challenge what she thought made her happy and make her wonder if she could fit these people into her life.
I read this one quickly; I truly couldn’t put it down. Highly entertaining, it’s a wonderful novel to escape into, especially for a bookworm that can relate to the way Nina feels all through the novel.

fast read and great story!
This light, witty story of an introvert who loves books and trivia is absolutely delightful. Treat yourself!
I read this for a book club; it’s definitely not my usual genre. I really liked Nina; I liked her quirkiness and I think we have some common views. The book moved slow for me. It was cute, and I’m sure many will love it ; just not my type of read.
Loved every word. Charming and comical and a very endearing main character.
Great read.
I am an Abbi Waxman superfan–she is one of the funniest authors writing today, and writes with such affection–I’ll read anything she writes. a true delight.
Love, Love, LOVED this book! Thoroughly delightful.
I didn’t want this clever, witty, and unique book to end. I wish I could continue reading about bookish Nina and her newfound family!
