The Book Doctor was a great read by Britney King. This is a great thriller that follows a writer who’s desperate to make a comeback. He realizes that success may cost more than he can afford. George is bitter, her was once a household name and now finds himself needing to make a comeback. His life is unraveling at the seams when he is contemplating death to get the public’s attention. His publisher sends a young and ambitious man to help his writing. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.
Britney King has done it again in her psychological thriller, The Book Doctor. The Prologue smacked me in the face, made me duck and cover, and had me rapidly turning the pages to find out what in the hell is going on.
George is a writer with a book deadline months past due and a wife with severe mental issues and the story takes off. It quickly becomes a twisted mess and I’m wondering what is going on with Liam. And his wife? My head is spinning.
George is living in hell.
A terrifying look into the life of a mentally disturbed woman and the man who cares for and keeps both of them safe. An impossible task, I believe.
Great job, Britney. You had me til the end and what a wild ride it was. I went down the path you led me and walked into crazy town. You had me questioning the characters actions, feeling something was a little bit off, and I never saw the ending coming.
I love books with serial killers and this led me down a murky path. The pacing kept me turning the pages, having to know what comes next. I can highly recommend every book of hers I have read.

Another great book by Britany King !! Awesome thriller! So many twists and turns it kept you guessing. George Dawson is a writer & he’s having problems finishing his book on time. He also cares for his mentally ill wife. His publisher sends him help in the form of a Book Doctor. Be careful who you let in. I was given an arc of this book and this is my own personal opinion.
Britney King is one of my go to authors! Wow wow wow! Another twisty tale I could not get enough of! Starting from the beginning I never would of guessed how this was gonna end! This is why I love king’s stories!!
George is a mystery writer, needing a little help or nudge to get his current story finished. Liam is sent to be his apprentice. Looks like George’s next book is gonna be big, making his comeback brilliant, of course this comes with a price and how much is he willing to pay?
When I say WOW, I mean it! This story is what every thriller seeker loves! Crazy characters, addictive plot and an ending that would shock your socks off! I could not recommend this more for dark and thriller readers out there, it does get gory at times!
WOW! I have read Britney’s books before and they never disappoint. They are always wild, crazy, and full of thrills. This one follows in the footsteps of Kill, Sleep, Repeat with and action packed story of failing writer George Dawson, his mentally unstable wife Eve, and Liam, the writer sent by the publisher as a last ditch effort to help George finish his book and avoid a lawsuit by the publisher, who his wife calls “the book doctor”. The reader also sees journal entries by a serial killer who gives great details on his thoughts as well as murders committed by an unknown person. As the bodies line up and you think you know what is happening, NOPE. Britney will completely spin your head with the twist at the end that I did NOT see coming. A great book for the psychological thriller enthusiast although I would say this one closely borders on horror.
5/5 stars
Thank you to Enticing Journey Book Promotions and Britney King for the review copy of this book
First, let me say if you have never read any of Britney’s books go buy some or all now! Thank you Britney for my #freecopy in exchange for my review. Y’all this book does NOT disappoint! Britney has one twisted mind and I’m here for it! This was a fast paced story that had me wanting more! I was loving all the twists and turns! I have been in a slump with my father-in-law’s death and just haven’t wanted to read. When I saw this in my email I just knew I had to start it! I devoured it and loved every page! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up! .
There is no doubt about it; Britney King writes EPIC thrillers with excellent twists. I have seen this time and again with every book she’s written. The twist in this one just might be my favorite of them all though as I wasn’t expecting it and it shocked the hell out of me! If you’ve ever read a book by her, you’ll know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t, be aware that her books are short, snappy, exciting, and dark. These books aren’t for the faint of heart and there are scenes that can turn your stomach. That doesn’t negate the fact that they are also well thought out, intriguing, and fun! Her books take on a satirical nature, and even though we don’t trust the narrator we can’t help but like them even if they are bad people.
If you are looking to get lost in a darker world for a little while with some characters who seem to edge on the sanity/insanity line, then this is the book for you! The buildup is slow, but it moves at a pace where it doesn’t become boring.
Wow! This book was amazing! I have a tendency to figure out story lines ahead of time. However, this time I didn’t have a clue and was seriously surprised at the ending.
George is an author who has had a very successful career. That is until he gets the dreaded writers block. He has a deadline to meet and can’t come up with the words. His publisher hires a young man, Liam, to come in and help him get the book written. George isn’t happy about Liam. He becomes even more unhappy when his wife, Eve, invites Liam to live in their guest house. Liam is known for helping authors write their books, but hasn’t published any of his own work.
This book was a page turner that I couldn’t put down. I couldn’t quit thinking about it for days after I finished it. I may even go back and read it again now that I have finished and see what I may have missed the first time around. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a well written psychological thriller.
I can always count on Britney King to thoroughly mess with my mind and leave me going ‘Holy Crap! She went there!’ Well, she did it again with The Book Doctor. The thing is I kind of knew where it was going, or at least I suspected. Then something would happen to make me doubt myself. I read a lot of psychological thrillers, and usually, I have things pretty well figured out well before the big twist, but this author always makes me doubt what I’ve figured out to the point that I completely talk myself out of it. Every time I start a Britney King book, I tell myself that I’m not going to guess, knowing full well that I will, and I did. I will say that this one moves so quickly I didn’t really have time for a lot of guessing and doubting, and I loved every minute of it. True to form, it’s wonderfully written, and the characters may not be exactly likable, but they surely are intriguing. Another must read from the queen of must reads.
The Book Doctor by Britney King
Yea! Yes! Yes! BK did it again with a book that just blew my mind! Love this author and highly loved this book! Fast read that sucks you in and doesn’t spit you out til the end. Thank you to the author Britney King for writing this amazing book and letting me leave my opinion.

My Review:
I do loves me some Britney King. She has her own uniquely clever, highly observant, and inherently crafty style and churns out riveting psychological thrillers that I seem to have developed quite a thirst for. But, man oh man! Based on the inner musings of her killers, she must be one twisted sister! I adore her smart snark, brilliant sociopaths, and wily sense of humor. The pacing and plotting of her tales are pure genius. Her name will undoubtedly remain on my list of favorites into perpetuity… that is unless she starts writing about zombies, as I despise zombies with the heat of a thousand suns.
Britney King never ceases to amaze me with the twisted storylines she comes up with. The Book Doctor is yet another example of a story that’s just crazy enough to keep you constantly on your toes without crossing over into the unbelievable category. But be forewarned: it’s not for the feint of heart.
When I dive into a thriller, I prefer to know as little about the book as possible beyond the synopsis. So that’s what kind of review this will be. Every chapter gives you a little more of the story (obviously), but also keeps twisting it like crazy. I binged this book in a single afternoon sitting because I couldn’t get enough. Also, the booknerd in me loved the fact that the main character is a writer.
I think it should be mentioned that there are some potentially triggering topics included in this story: mental health, domestic violence, graphic violence and murder. If you’re not easily triggered by any of those topics, I highly recommend The Book Doctor.
Oh, yes. I love Britney King’s stories! This one is definitely her darkest gore, very violent. How many ways is there to kill someone? Apparently countless. This is not your book if you are squeamish. I loved it. The characters of George and Liam…not so much. They are so weird and flawed. I knew to expect a twist, but couldn’t imagine what it was going to be. Oh….So….Why didn’t I think of that? Good job, Britney!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
It’s always a great pull you in and get ready for a ride type of beginning.
Then it’s meeting your characters and choosing who you like and who you don’t or who is good and who is bad. It’s a ride with twists and turns and trying to solve whatever question you have before the actual question is revealed.
Then you get to that moment… you know what that moment is, the one where you question everything you’ve read this far, you question your own questions, and the answer was there all along, and it’s like you have to go back through the story and find those points that are the pieces that could have been clear but weren’t until “that moment”.
Great story, great thrilling ride, wonderful twist. I’m excited for whatever is next.
This book will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning. When you think you’ve figured it out, another twist will happen. I couldn’t put this down. George is a writer who is trying to get back to being a great author. A man is sent to help him finish his novel but George discovers some secrets about him. What will he do with those secrets?
This gritty, dark psychological thriller is an adrenaline rush from beginning to end. Every word, phrase and sentence is carefully crafted and as they are molded together, the result is literary brilliance! You may think you see the whole depth of the characters and how they intertwine but nothing is ever as simple as it appears. Britney King has created a story that will keep you tightly within its grasp, long after the last word is read.
I have enjoyed many of Renee’s books. They are usually about a detective in Denver. Well…this book isn’t even close to those books! This book is more ‘gritty’ and intense scenes in my opinion and I LOVE IT!!! What’s Yours Is Mine is a story that has a history to it and the history between some of the people are not nice! I hope there are more stories like this one from Renee.
No one writes psychological thrillers better than Britney King. Period. Her latest release, The Book Doctor, grabs you by the throat in the prologue and doesn’t let go until the final page. In fact, even after the final page, The Book Doctor will linger in your head and leave you questioning and reinterpreting what you have just read. The author quotes Lord Byron in her introduction: ‘Tis strange — but true; for truth is always strange, stranger than fiction. By the end of the book, you will likely be left questioning, within the context of the book, exactly what was truth, and what was fiction?
George Dawson is an aging author who has been very successful in the past. But now, he has gone several years without a best seller and has developed the dreaded “writer’s block”. George, is nearing a deadline with his publisher who has run out of patience with him. His publisher told George that he was sending him a “book doctor”, a younger man named Liam with a reputation for helping other authors improve their books, to help him finish and polish his book.
While George is desperate for a successful book so that he can reclaim lost public adoration, he is also conflicted. He knows that he needs fans, but he has grown weary of dealing with them. George has grown cynical and irascible. He does not like most people and definitely does not suffer fools gladly.
George is struggling with many issues including alcoholism and dealing with his wife, Eve, who is mentally ill. Eve has a history of both attempted suicide and multiple attempts to murder George. They both have a checkered past and both suffer depression exacerbated by the deaths of their children. Their relationship fluctuates between loving and murderous.
Several chapters of the book are “Journal Entries” that describe multiple gruesome killings in a multitude of ways. As the body count rises, so do the problems of George and Liam. Hints are dropped but things do not become clear until the end of the book.
Given the complexity of the story and the unique and unexpected ending of the book, it is difficulty to describe the story without spoiling it for new readers.
The Book Doctor is well paced and brilliantly plotted. This book is quite a fun roller coaster ride. All of the best roller coasters have a long, slow, gradual, anxiety-inducing climb up a steep incline, reach the summit, hesitate briefly at the tipping point, and then plunge rapidly down the decline, with sharp and unexpected twists and turns to the left and to the right before finally reaching the end of the ride. So too does this book! Previous novels of Britney King have likewise been a roller coaster ride; however, The Book Doctor may be the most exciting ride yet!
The Book Doctor is 5-star psychological thriller from Britney King. Enough said! Read it! You will not be disappointed.
I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) from the author in return for an honest review. My review is provided voluntarily.
George Dawson is a writer that is having trouble finishing the novel he is working on. A book doctor, Liam, is sent to help George with the novel. Liam ends up moving into the cottage on George’s property. George’s wife, Eve, has a mental illness that George has to cope with. This psychological thriller will keep you up at night. A really good story line that keeps you wanting to read more.
I am always impressed at how Britney King can churn out so many thrillers and have them be these well-thought-out works of art, and I felt the same way about The Book Doctor: A Psychological Thriller!
The Book Doctor is not going to be for you squeamish readers out there, but if you like the dark, violent, disturbing, and gritty you will love it! This was fast-paced and a super quick read in the way that all of King’s books seem to be, and that is just one of the many things I liked about it. Even though neither George nor Liam are particularity likable, I still managed to develop a bit of a soft spot for George. How I don’t know, but I did!
As of right now, Kill, Sleep, Repeat is still my favorite, but The Book Doctor is a solid psychological thriller that will keep you on your toes, and at the same time keep you hooked until the very last page.
There really isn’t a lot that can be said without giving anything away, but if you are a fan of the enigma that is Britney King, you should really enjoy The Book Doctor. I had many theories while reading and none of them ended up accurate so I have a feeling the end will blow a lot of readers away. Since this is a standalone you could also choose to read it if you haven’t read this author yet. And if you haven’t, what are you waiting for?!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an advance review copy of this book! All opinions and thoughts are my own.
