Josie works until her arms ache, until the paramedics arrive and pull her gently away from the woman’s cold, fragile body. Noah’s voice cracks beside her as he calls the time of death for his own, beloved mother.Arriving with her partner Noah for dinner at his family’s immaculate countryside home, Detective Josie Quinn is devastated to find Noah’s mother, Colette, lying lifeless in the back … lifeless in the back garden, her mouth clogged with soil.
Searching the house for answers, Josie’s team don’t know what to make of the rosary beads buried in the dirt near the body, or the hidden file labelled “Drew Pratt”, the small town of Denton’s most famous missing person.
As she delves deeper into Pratt’s case, Josie quickly discovers he had a brother whose body mysteriously washed up on the banks of a river. There’s also a diary entry suggesting that Colette may have met him on the last day he was seen alive. Can Josie believe the unthinkable, that a kind old soul like Colette might have been involved in their murders? And, will Josie’s new relationship with Noah survive the accusation?
Josie’s only hope lies in tracking down Pratt’s daughter. But when she arrives at her home to find she’s been murdered just minutes before, Josie knows the real killer is one step ahead and won’t stop until Colette’s secret is buried forever. With many more innocent lives on the line, how deep is Josie prepared to dig to reach the truth?
An absolutely unputdownable crime thriller that will have you up all night! If you love Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni or Rachel Caine you’re guaranteed to be hooked from page one.

OMG! I just finished this book, and I’m speechless. Truly an amazing read! Lisa Regan, I bow to your powerful storytelling expertise. You’re the master! This is so, so good! I think it might be my new favorite.
Besides being such a great read, it was also incredibly heartbreaking on many counts. Seeing Noah lose his precious mother, hearing about what a terrible father he has and learning about his family all while questioning what kind of person his mother really was… well, I won’t go into detail, so I don’t spoil it, but I will say, it kept me up at night trying to finish. I couldn’t put it down and then when I had too, I kept thinking about it.
I could have done without all the difficult moments between Josie and Noah. I almost had a heart attack a couple of times, and then I wanted to smack Noah and his sister for their BS, but I survived, and so did they. I’m really curious to see what Josie and Laura’s relationship becomes in the next book. Josie has the patience of a saint when she needs too.
In this book, we get to see the return of Luke, Josie’s ex-fiancé. It was a nice surprise, and I enjoyed getting caught up on his story. We also get to see Chief Chitwood relax a little and learn to have more trust in his team. He might even show a smile or two. We get to see Gretchen return to work and slowly regain the trust of her boss and the community. And we also get a glimpse of what happens when Josie falls off the wagon and starts drinking again. She’s been pretty strong-willed, but the woman isn’t perfect.
This book weaves a story so intricate and detailed, I’m not even sure what to say about it. As soon as you think you have it figured out, you turn the page, and something new happens, or another innocent person winds up dead.
This is an absolutely perfect 5-star read! Lisa Regan at her very best! Check it out, you won’t regret it.
The Bones She Buried by author Lisa Regan is the fifth in the Detective Josie Quinn series. I enjoy this series very much and each time there is a new book it is as if I am visiting with friends as I read. The first murder in The Bones She Buried is too close for comfort. It is Noah’s mother! She is found in her garden face-down with soil stuffed down her throat. It is not long before there is another murder and the method is asphyxiation also. What could the odd items which are found hidden within Colette’s sewing machine have to do with the disappearances and murders of people associated with the Pratt family? Noah seems to resent Josie’s investigation into the murder of his mother. Is he hiding a family secret or just too stunned to react as Josie plods along to solve this crime?
I have enjoyed all of the books in this series by Lisa Regan.
This author can do no wrong. I’ve read absolutely everything she’s ever written from day 1, and Regan never disappoints. Every time I read her next book, I always say it’s her best yet. How she keeps outdoing herself is beyond me. She’s the new leader in crime fiction and police procedurals. All the other authors can step aside and bow down to Regan’s skillful storytelling.
Josie Quinn is one heck of a detective but when it comes to her personal relationships what a mess.
It’s been 4 years since Josie’s cop husband Ray went dirty and was murdered. Since that time she was engaged to Luke who worked for the state police but he also betrayed both her and his badge. She then started dating fellow cop Noah Fraley. Noah’s mother has never really warmed up to Josie but she continues to try with her and that included going to her monthly dinners with her kids. What Josie and Noah didn’t expect to find when they arrived at her house was her dead in her garden. It didn’t take long to realize she had been murdered.
This kicks off one heck of a police investigation that goes back to the 70’s and coinciding with Josie and her team’s investigation are more murders that are obviously to cover up whatever happened a long time ago that Noah’s mother must have had evidence on.
For every thread they pulled in the case it lead to another and with the bodies piling up of potential witnesses the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end.
This series has always been shocking and exciting at the same time. It’s also very unconventional in the romance department. Josie is certainly not your average heroine. Even though her personal life stresses me out I do look forward to seeing where the author is going to take her next.
Another great book in the Detective Josie Quinn series!!!
Same great characters, lots of action, a few aw hell no moments, loved the new storyline and it kept me turning the pages.
I’m moving on to book #6!!!! While these can be read as stand alone, I do not recommend it because it book gives you a little more character insight.

Part of a detective series, but can be read as a standalone. This is my first book by this author and I loved it! I’ll definitely invest in the rest of the series. Detective Josie Quinn and Detective Noah Fraley head to his mother’s house for dinner, only to find her deceased. Her murder sets off a chain of deaths, all seemingly unrelated unless Josie can find the connection, some dating back 50 years. Cleverly written, Josie’s character is both tough and smart as well as unshakable, both in her personal and professional life. The twisted ending was very much a surprise that you don’t want to miss!
A twisted family.
The book involves a puzzling mystery that held my interest. There were also enough personal details and emotional issues, within and between, the main characters to give them dimension and make the reader care about them. An entertaining read.
Painful to read how the relationship between Josie and Noah is an the verge breaking because of what happened to Noah’s mom and a sister with no love for Josie. Almost till the end I had no idea what was going on whatsoever with the case. Great story with likable and not so likable characters. Five stars and a must read series!
Once again, Lisa Regan blows you out of the water with The Bones She Buried. When I saw the premise for this book, I was hesitant. I didn’t want anyone messing with my precious boy, Noah, but oh boy, was he, and Josie, messed with. In true Lisa Regan style, she took them apart piece by piece before putting them back together again.
When Noah and Josie discover Noah’s mother, Colette, dead in her flower garden, Noah’s life begins to unravel. Everything he believed to be true about his mother, the saint, suddenly came into question. Who was Colette Fraley? What was she hiding? What was her killer looking for? There were more questions than answers, and it was up to Josie to find her killer before anyone else died.
But then someone else dies. And someone else, and someone else. Following the pathetic trail of clues with her detectives Mettner and Palmer, she soon discovers that the killer, or killers, are hellbent on covering up the sins of the past.
As you read The Bones She Buried, you’ll be certain several different times that you have this all figured out, but the reality is, you don’t. You won’t until the explosive end when family secrets, and sins, come to light. Sit down, buckle up, and prepare to take another wild ride with Josie, Noah, Gretchen, and Finn as they unravel, outrace, and outsmart the killers after their loved ones.
I love unpredictable but logical plot-lines and Lisa Regan delivers that and more. I also love smart women who rely on their common sense and instincts and logic. The dilemma is a welcome bonus! Loved this one, and the ending.
This starts with the murder of Noah’s mother. That investigation leads to decades old disappearances and suicides. While Noah is grieving, Josie is trying to solve a murder that leads to a higher body count. This investigation tests Noah and Josie’s relationship, along with her relationship with Noah’s siblings. Trying to learn of his mother’s past, Josie discovers evidence of more crimes and coverups. There is one small section that leaves a storyline open. What happened? This is not surrounding the murder part of the story but involves Josie personally. I HOPE what may or may not have happened, didn’t happen. That is all I am willing to say due to spoilers. As always, anxiously awaiting the next installment of Josie Quinn.
Lisa Regan hits it out of the ballpark once again! I’ve read all the books in this series & they just keep getting better. Once I start I have great difficulty putting it down. Hope she continues on with this series.
I was shocked by the ending, but I really liked it.
Josie Quinn is investigating a case that is close to her heart. Her boyfriend’s mother is found face down in the garden… her mouth clogged dirt. There are rosary beads half buried next to her.
Her house has evidently been searched … what were they looking for? As Josie and her team searches the house, they find a hidden cache with items belonging to three different men .. 2 have been missing for years, another man found dead, also years ago.
Was Noah’s mother a part of these cases? What did she know about the missing men?
Josie has her hands full …. trying to find a killer, Noah is completely devastated about his mother’s death and Noah’s sister trying to come between them … and succeeding.
As someone tries to burn down Noah’s house .. with him and Josie in it … and relatives and friends of the missing men dying sometimes moments before Josie can question them, Josie realizes the killer is one step ahead. Just how deep is Josie prepared to dig for the truth?
This is an extremely well crime fiction. This is an excellent addition to the existing series. Although 5th in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone, but as usual I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. I have found this author’s writing to be sharp and precise with memorable characters. It’s an action-packed page turner from start to surprising ending.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of THE BONES SHE BURIED. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
How could this have happened? Josie and Noah arrive at his mother’s home to find her in the backyard, dead. This is no accidental death as his mother’s mouth is full of soil and there are other signs of foul play. Josie and Noah are both employed with the Denton P.D. where Josie is a detective. How will she be able to investigate such a personal case to both of them? The only odd clue they find in the home is a belt buckle, a flash drive and an arrowhead all hidden in his mother’s sewing machine. Why was she hiding them? Is this why she was killed? A totally absorbing and fascinating mystery as clues are scarce and as they do turn up, lead to more questions. Josie is dealing with the investigation as the other lead detective is still on desk duty. In addition, Noah is in shock from the death of his mother and not happy that Josie is working the case…she should just be there for him. Ms. Regan knows how to keep you guessing as there are more victims and crimes. The investigation soon leads to a much larger crime buried in the past. Another amazing mystery in the Detective Josie Quinn series! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
The Bones She Buried reveals a fast-paced mystery with more twists than a mountain trail. Detective Josie Quinn is planning a quiet family dinner with her boyfriend Noah and his mother. When they find her face down with a mouth full of dirt, Josie seeks justice even when it brings her nothing but trouble. The department is down one detective so Josie works the case despite her close ties to the victim. Exploring each unexpected turn causes Josie and Noah to butt heads and puts their relationship in jeopardy. Each discovery brings more suspense as the missing pieces fill in for a shocking ending. With a plot that keeps you guessing and characters that worm their way into your heart, the story moves quickly to a satisfying ending.
This is book five in the crime thriller series, Detective Josie Quinn. Lisa Regan has given an all-out gripping account of events in this narrative for both new and veteran readers of the series.
When Detective Josie Quinn and her partner, Noah Fraley arrive at his mother’s home for a family dinner, they find it in disarray and eventually find her lifeless body in the backyard. Working hard to uncover what has happened to Mrs. Fraley and to also be a supportive girlfriend to Noah, Josie is pulled in opposite directions. Secrets are uncovered and questions need to be asked but how far will Josie go to discover the truth if means hurting Noah and his mother’s memory?
This plot was outstanding. My favorite so far in the series. With so many twist and turns, it was hard to know which way was up. Regan gave very little foreshadowing, leaving the reader in the dark until the very end. The characters were strong and relatable. It was hard not to feel that intrinsic conflict waging war with Josie. Regan did an outstanding job of creating this multidimensional storyline all while keeping the plot tight and the reader on point. Great read. 5 stars.
Thank you to #NetGalley for this ARC of #TheBonesSheBuried in exchange for an honest review.
First book I read in this series so it can be read as a stand-alone. Occasionally references are made to what happened in the previous books which makes me want to go back to read those. This was an intriguing mystery. Characters were well developed. You really felt the sorrow affecting Noah with the murder of his mother. The frustration of Josie not been able to help Noah and the drifting apart of the two.
Josie’s own struggle not to fall back on alcohol and losing the battle. The story has a lot of twist and turn and I never expected how it turned out.
