In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series for readers of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price…Let me be clear: I never intended to raise my brother from his grave, though he may claim otherwise. If there’s anything I’ve learned from him in the years since, it’s that the dead hide truths as well as the living. When Tea … living.
When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.
In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha—one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice.
Memoirs of a Geisha meets The Name of the Wind in this brilliant new fantasy series by Rin Chupeco!

3.5 stars It had a wonderful start, but seemed to lose some momentum midway and then picked up somewhat towards the end. Overall it’s an interesting premise and had a lot of potential for a great fantasy, but didn’t quite deliver.
This book is absolutely amazing! I didn’t want to put it down for anything!
Very detailed and engrossing, not a book to quick read.
This book shuttles between Tea being 12 and starting her training, narrated by herself, and 17 and exiled, narrated by another party. She has had a full life between those times.
Someone compared it to Memoirs of a Geisha, which is a very good comparison, which I find very strange for fantasy.
The most aggravating thing is that it ends on a serious cliff hanger, in several senses. The two narratives have not been connected yet and what on Earth is the 17 year old Tea trying to do?? On to the next book…
Exciting, captivating, different, entertaining. It was a little confusing at times and some of the made up words are hard to keep track of. You definitely need an imagination for this one.
Beautifully intricate writing.
Not a satisfiying ending…lots of things left unanswered. Good story, uninspired ending.
Did not like how it ended but loved the rest.
Once you get use to the back and forth between present and past, it is really awesome! The main character is a strong girl, who grows into someone even stronger! Her journey gets laid open by her storytelling to a guy she kinda summoned. The journey is sad sometimes, but still epic. You will not want to put this book down. Can’t wait for the second book!
loved it. As soon as I finished I look to see if the next one was out and was heartbroken to see that it wasnt.
