I liked it so well that I read all of the Lincoln Rhyme stories.
Awesome book, huge fan.
It was amazing to me how they looked at everything to determine the connections to the killer. I loved it
I have read so many of Deaver’s Rhyme novels, can’t believe I never read this early one. Explains how Rhyme got started on his second career as a (wheel)chair detective. It also tells how he and Amelia met and began working together. Quite a good read!
I loved the strong characters. This book was so intense with fear. The I,e pegged and the reality that this could possibly happen. A definite page turner.
This first installment of the Lincoln Rhyme series became available at my local library at the very same time I was binge watching the first season of the television show based on the book. I had other paper and audiobooks at the ready but wanted to read the books in order.
The book is clinical and overly scientific in places, but much of it was familiar to me because of my love of the TV show Bones, based on Kathy Reichs’ books about Dr. Temperance Brennan.
I was able to recognize in the book where the Lincoln Rhyme show gathered inspiration for many of its scenes. It turns out that the television series is quite loosely based on the book.
The plot dragged in places, particularly in the second third of the book, but things wrapped up well at the end and things ended up in a satisfactory state.
I was ecstatic when I found out I won from Goodreads this special copy of The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver. I get, not only the first story of the Lincoln Rhyme series, but the short story, Captivated, where we meet Jeffrey Deaver’s new character Colter Shaw and an excerpt from his new Colter Shaw series, Book I, The Never Game.
I loved going back to the beginning with Lincoln Rhyme and how it all began. Even though I knew that outcome of his struggle to accept his life after becoming a quadriplegic, I felt his all the suspense and despair.
He finds a kindred spirit in Emilia Sachs. She has her own baggage she carries around, refusing to let anyone get close to her, searching for her place in life.
The serial killer, though I had a hunch he was ‘right there’, was a surprise to me. I love delving into the twisted minds of those who can do such wretched things to another person. At least he has some feelings, those it doesn’t stop him.
The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver is everything I want in a novel. I love the deep dark world he takes me into and his ability to leave me feeling good about everything when it is all said and done….until the next time.
CAPTIVATED: I love an author bonus and I got a good one with this short story. Colter Shaw is a bounty hunter and he always gets his ‘man’, picking and choosing the jobs he will take on. Colter and Jeffrey were ahead of me every step of the way, keeping me in suspense, never giving away the bad guy until they step forward and expose themselves. I quickly fell for the character and eagerly flipped the pages…
…then moving on to the excerpt for the first book in the series, The Never Game.
He’s in the water, struggling to enter the capsized boat and save the pregnant woman inside. Will he succeed? And why is she in there…alone…

Another nice Jeffery Deaver book.

I won a paperback of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.
I loved this book! Deaver is very good at weaving a story that starts from page one and does not let up until the very last page. There are twist and turns that slap you in the face because you don’t see them coming. And even with a vicious villain slaying his victims in menacing ways, Deaver’s adds some funny lines here and there to break the tension.
Lincoln Rhyme, formerly head of the Investigation and Resource Division of the New York City Police Department, became a quadriplegic on a crime scene he was working. He created their protocol for forensic investigation, worked with the FBI, and even established databases for cataloging trace evidence before he was injured. He does everything mostly through head movements on his high tech computer and one finger on his left hand. After the first victim, he is brought in to work the case from his bedroom. A portable police room including a forensic lab is set up in that one room. Patrol officer Amelia Sachs, my favorite character next to Rhyme, becomes Rhyme’s eyes, nose and arms and legs at the crime scenes to collect the PE (physical evidence). She also weaves her way into his heart and becomes Rhyme’s girlfriend. There are a host of other characters that are important to the story.
From the first victim, everyone in that room is on high alert as they work the case and search for the u nsub (unknown subject). The unsub leaves clues at the scenes to where the next victim can be found. He is a blend of two characters.
Racing against time, the team works tirelessly through genuine forensic knowledge for the entire weekend to solve this gory, (but necessary to the story), crime before the vicious villain does his final deed.
This was a fast paced suspense/thriller that keeps you guessing right up to the very end. I was shocked when I realized who the actual killer was. He was a wolf in sheep clothing. Brilliantly done and completely captivating! You don’t want to miss reading this thriller!
Love this author
Deaver’s best!
“I did a kindness to them all. They are immortal now. I freed them. I took them down to the bone.”
I read this book for the first time when it first came out back in 1998. I loved it from the beginning and read the entire Lincoln Rhyme series after that.
I also saw THE BONE COLLECTOR movie starring Denzel Washington and Angelie Jolie, who both did a masterful job in bringing their characters alive from the book. And as I remember this movie followed the book pretty closely.
I decided to re-read this book because there is a new television series on called THE BONE COLLECTOR. It seemed like there are a bunch of discrepancies from the book and I re-read it just to refresh my memory.
The TV show is okay but it barely follows the book and, in comparison, definitely makes the movie shine.
Lincoln Rhyme was a criminalist with the New York Police Department until he was injured on the job and became a quadriplegic. He’s having a difficult time finding the desire to live when abruptly he is called upon to consult on an unusual case. He brings in Officer Amelia Sachs to be “his feet” at the crime scenes.
I loved the storyline. I loved the characters especially Lincoln, Amelia, and his health aide Thom.
If you haven’t read this book and this series, you are genuinely missing out on one of the best police procedurals out there.
This book had me sitting at the front of my seat from the beginning to the end!
Wonderful book
I like his books.
Must read. The series is fantastic and this first volume is mezmerizing.
The movie was great, the book was better. The depth of scary is present and the detail of just how horrible some people can be.
This is exciting and terrifying at the same time.
