Detective Reed Mattox, just three months removed from the death of his partner, has turned invisibility into an art form.
Switching to the K-9, taking over the graveyard shift, moving to a farmhouse miles outside of Columbus, his every move has become predicated on putting as much distance between himself and the outside world as possible.
That distance is shattered though when bodies begin … shattered though when bodies begin turning up in The Bottoms, the poverty-stricken section of town he is assigned to patrol. Grisly, horrific scenes start to pop up in the middle of the night and the overburdened precinct has no choice but to put Reed on it.
Now operating far outside of his comfort zone with a Belgian Malinois for a partner that attracts attention wherever they go, Reed is forced to unravel the murders, taking him clear across the city and back years in time, to an event that some very influential people will do anything to keep buried…

did not finish, did not like it
Boatman thrills with excellent police procedure led by a likable hero and his partner, a German Malinois, to unravel gruesome and seemingly random triple sword killings. Five stars
Dark drama. Good guys chasing the bad guy who is pretty much justified in his actions.
Honestly, I felt the story could have been stronger. The villain seemed very dull at times. The end was a bit dull, too. On the good side, I did read the story.
I enjoy a book with a canine character; this one gave me greater appreciation of military/police dogs. It was hard not feeling sympathy for the protagonist, he is a tragic character. I am starting to read the second book in the series.
I enjoyed this very much. I am now a Dustin Stevens fan and on this 3rd book and have listed them all to read, Keep them coming
Very good thriller story and fairly well written. Character development is somewhat tedious. Main character is not one I particularly want to spend time with again.
Loved the book. Sparked my interest in the Reed & Billie series–just finished all 7. Great characters, lots of action and surprising plot twists.
Well written-good story
I’ve now read books 1 and 2 in this series and have enjoyed them very much. As is my lot in life i read them out of order but it wasn’t a problem. I found book one even better than book too. The only shortcoming was there was no revelation how the “boatman” obtained his specialized skillset. It didn’t take anything g away from the reading experience, I’m just curious. All in all a very good read.
I kept coming back because I wanted to know what happens next. Believable characters and I like K-9 stories. K-9s are like people only better. Good story line and believable. I could be a “Boat Man” in similar circumstances, only ai would finish the job.
Well written book. I was able to picture everything in the book as the author described. Every last breath, every attack. A riveting mystery to the very end. I absolutely fell in love with the canine partner, Billie. A must read.
Very entertaining!
