Detective Reed Mattox, just three months removed from the death of his partner, has turned invisibility into an art form.
Switching to the K-9, taking over the graveyard shift, moving to a farmhouse miles outside of Columbus, his every move has become predicated on putting as much distance between himself and the outside world as possible.
That distance is shattered though when bodies begin … shattered though when bodies begin turning up in The Bottoms, the poverty-stricken section of town he is assigned to patrol. Grisly, horrific scenes start to pop up in the middle of the night and the overburdened precinct has no choice but to put Reed on it.
Now operating far outside of his comfort zone with a Belgian Malinois for a partner that attracts attention wherever they go, Reed is forced to unravel the murders, taking him clear across the city and back years in time, to an event that some very influential people will do anything to keep buried…

Oh yeah! Love that Billie. And Reed’s not bad either, although he could smile a bit more. Of course he doesn’t have much to smile about, but it gets better in the next few books. Pretty gritty, you have to have a stomach for violence in all this author’s books. i recommend reading the whole series start to finish.
If you like thrillers, this entire series about Detective Reed Mattox and Canine Detective Billie, this is the series for you. I have finished all the the series and hoping there will be more coming in the future.
This book has alot of words. Had to go back several times to reread what I read because I would lose interest but I felt compelled to finish and find out the who and the why.
I liked this and will look for more in this series.
I stopped reading this book the second time he used the past tense of “drag” as “drug”.
Hard to follow at times. A little too graphic for me.
Apparently Columbus Ohio cops with 12 years on the force don’t have any romance in their lives. And they have stomach problems anytime someone with authority looks sideways at them. Constance reference to a lost partner without any explanation. Could have been a good mystery line
Very intriguing and suspenseful
Mystery, misfits, murder and a dog make it hard to stop reading
This is about a detective and his K9 partner.
Scary but very good read
This book didn’t hold my interest for very long.
I shouldn’t have said “finished it” ’cause I didn’t. I started it read two plus chapters and gave up. The main characters were so stereotype, I quit. Try it, you may like it.
Love the man-dog relationship. I would hope that it would continue to grow.
The only thing keeping this from a five star read, in my opinion, was the limited role that Billie played. It was a shame that she was so often confined to the car, and when she got her shot at a takedown, it was under played. Hopefully,, as Reed learns how to better utilize her abilities we will see more of Billie!
Great page turned, truly enjoyed reading this author.
Decent read
It kept you guessing until almost the end
This book will keep you guessing and involved from start to finish. Couldn’t figure out the surprise ending.
My feelings changed towards the end, because of what he and his wife went through.
