Detective Reed Mattox, just three months removed from the death of his partner, has turned invisibility into an art form.
Switching to the K-9, taking over the graveyard shift, moving to a farmhouse miles outside of Columbus, his every move has become predicated on putting as much distance between himself and the outside world as possible.
That distance is shattered though when bodies begin … shattered though when bodies begin turning up in The Bottoms, the poverty-stricken section of town he is assigned to patrol. Grisly, horrific scenes start to pop up in the middle of the night and the overburdened precinct has no choice but to put Reed on it.
Now operating far outside of his comfort zone with a Belgian Malinois for a partner that attracts attention wherever they go, Reed is forced to unravel the murders, taking him clear across the city and back years in time, to an event that some very influential people will do anything to keep buried…

For a new series, I am currently on #7, and have really enjoyed them all. I have noticed that around #4-5 there were missing words and gramatical errors. But, the author is very descriptive and stays on track throughout his books. He keeps the ‘team’ on track and doesn’t lose his end vision of closure and has not lost a victim yet. Towards the end of the series, he gets a bit more and more descriptive, but I am assuming these books could be read as stand-alones., which is fine. I would recommend anyone to this series.
Not enough about the dog.
Ya gotta route for this guy.
Spell-binding — when’s his next one?
A great “revenge” book. Almost makes me wish it could actually happen to some
“very deserving” people out there!
Kept me guessing on several levels
I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read more in the series. It got off to a slow start and there are a lot of vague references to an incident that clearly impacted the MC in a huge way which is annoying but the book picked up and was a heart racing thrill at the end.
Detective Reed Mattox has recently partnered with K9 officer Billie after the death of his previous (human) partner. He prefers isolation, working the graveyard shift. However after a gruesome murder he and Billie are put on the case. As bodies pile up and time ticks down Reed races to figure out what is going on and who the killer is.
The book drags a bit at the beginning. There are numerous references to Reed’s former partner, now deceased but no details as to what happened. That is super frustrating. We don’t get much background on Reed either. In fact, I think we get more info on Billie, his former Marine K9 partner.
When the book finally picks up and the story intensifies it becomes a really good detective/police procedural story. Towards the end it becomes a race against the clock and it is heart pounding. There is really irritating police politics at play and a move at the end that is pretty damn stupid (not by Reed) that has you yelling at the book.
The ending is bittersweet and gives us a bit of a glimpse into how things will go for Reed from here on out. I will definitely read the next book.
very good read!
Can’t wait to read about what happens next in Reed and Billie’s world. I love K-9 stories but this one has even greater depth as the relationship between Reed and Billie develops.
Quickly paced. Interesting plot with curious details. Expertly drawn and believable characters, even the minor ones. Well done.
Interesting plot with histori facts I knew nothing about before. Moved along at a fast pace, didn’t want to put it down tlll it was finished.
Too violent for me
First read for this author. Easy to follow & read. Enjoyed insight into the operations of the police. Liked following the possible thought process of the “boatman”….yes, sympatheticly as well. Realistic to feel the interface with all characters. I love big dogs, too. I clearly see this as beginning of series. Very few typos, yeah! Good read.
Plot is predictable, characters and scenes could be fleshed out more. Syntax & grammatical errors get in the way of readability. Interesting use of Grecian mythology.
These books are an interesting read with good plots. Unfortunately the author’s grasp of grammar and syntax is poor. He also has vocabulary problems, using words inappropriately or incorrectly. All of these deficits could be remedied by a good editor and/or proofreader–neither of which he has.
Loved the twists & turns 2 figure out who the Boat Man was. Great page turner.
It is well written and edited. The main character and his K9 have a wonderfully understated relationship which I liked very much. It is a bit gory but only after the act and very much part of the plot, so for the most part the gory aspects too, are understated.
First let me say it has nothing to do with boats. The whole story was a rush to stop a killer who was killing bad guys. Now if the killer was killing innocent people I could have enjoyed the story more.
i read this book whilst recuperating from a surgery it was a great read – kept me entertained whilst not taxing the brain cells too much post-op
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Loved seeing the appreciation for Billie develop as well as the”hidden” past of key characters. I enjoyed it being a very intriguing story while still being clean. Too often I start to read a seemingly good mystery but end up deleting the book because there is just too much language I don’t care for. Thank you for a great book!
