Dangerous Do is a modest follow-on to Ghost Coach a “comic thriller” more like a drawn out soap opera — 3 stars.
This novel is a quick read but not as good as Ghost Coach. We have many of the same characters as in Ghost Coach — it is a scam seeking revenge where monetary gain is secondary.
The characters are just playing roles under the direction of our heroine Dani and bankrolled by her off again love interest Nick.
The story begins as Dani Silver spots a fellow scammer in LaGuardia Airport leading to a near death experience. Since it is more a revenge than a new scam, the plot is less complicated than Ghost Coach; there are not as many explanations of how to set up a scam. Some of the background of Ghost Coach is explained but the planning is more on the fly than in the previous novel.
Ghost Coach had failing scams that needed corrections while Dangerous Do had hardly any failures needing inventive recoveries and too much time waiting around for bones to mend.
The presentation is still a young woman who follows Hollywood pulp magazines with yen for romance. Dani still has a thing for Nick Kuiper but looses interest as the scam is about to play out.
What a great read!!!!
The first page of The Blonde with the Dangerous “Do” breathlessly pulls you right in along with Dani Silver, the con artist with a heart, when the bad guys throw her down a manhole that takes her on a wild ride through an underground flood. It’s hard to top that kind of beginning, but the rest of the book also grabs you and never lets you go! If the first rule of books, like show biz is, “always leave them wanting more,” Dani Silver, Grifter’s Daughter, is a huge success.
I can’t remember reading anything as much fun, as fast paced, or as satisfying and enjoyable as The Blonde in a long time. I grew up reading and loving Donald Westlake, and I think I’ve finally found his match. Only this time, with a feminist flair.
The story hinges around the daughter of a con artist who decides to improve on her father’s game (he’s in jail because he asked her to turn him in, their family relations are complicated). Conning for good, not evil, by conning only the evil, this Robin Hood of a con woman donates most of the ill- gotten gains she liberates to charity. Not that she doesn’t enjoy a luxury item or two. Or that members of her eclectic crew are strangers to greed.
In the previous books, The Grifter’s Daughter, and Ghost Coach, which you don’t need to read to understand or love this book, but I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to, she helped mogul Nick Kuiper regain the fortune he lost. Their love is great, but she gotta be she, and left him because she just couldn’t give up her con career to be a law abiding, rich wife.
Still, all broken up from her ordeal, she calls him and he comes running to nurse her back to health. While he cares for her, she’s hungry for revenge against her attackers, and puts together a gang of con artists to take them down. The game is on.
How many books have you read featuring Branston, Mossouri? Probably none, but this book does.
You won’t guess what’s coming next in her intricate plans, unless you have a really bizarre and diabolical mind. Still, you don’t need to diagram the plot, since unlike some books that contain family trees, glossaries, and/or maps, or where you can’t keep track of the characters without a score card, the action is easy to follow, logical in its own unique way.
Can’t wait for the next one in the well named Grifter’s Daughter Comic Thriller series. Meanwhile, I’ll reread the first two. I love that Duane Lindsey makes it look so easy, his books just flow with every word in the right place. I suspect that Dani is hiding inside his mind and just writes her own way in and out of trouble herself!
Edit
I liked this book it had a good story line and good characters also. It was a fun read
Dani Silver a con artist is in between “jobs” when she goes to the airport to get away after her father is sent to prison. She sees a man walking and recognizes the signs of another con artist. They hook up and she ends up going with him to Branson Missouri. He is a big wheel at a construction site that he shows to Dani. She and he goes back to his place and when he takes a phone call, she begins snooping around. That’s when things go south in a very fast and furious way. Anton and his brother, Badgi attempt to kill Dani thinking she is a spy. They weren’t successful and now Dani seeks revenge and wants to know exactly what they are doing. She gets Nick, who is in love with her to come to her rescue and some of the odd ball gang members to help her do just that. Will she succeed? Will she and Nick finally be a couple or is she pulling another con on Nick again? You will need to read the book for the answers.
I couldn’t finish it last night and woke up totally anxious to read the rest. Now THAT’s a great book!
Incredible characters, complex scam (long con), and surprise ending. Bravo!
