“Brilliant…as fascinating as it is original.”—St. Louis Post-DispatchFrom New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman, the first novel in his series featuring Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn & Officer Jim Chee who encounter a bizarre case that borders between the supernatural and murderHomicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered … there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place—a corpse with a mouth full of sand—abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.
There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn’s pursuit of a Wolf-Witch leads him where even the bravest men fear, on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

I learned a lot about the Navajo culture just by reading Hillerman’s books they are a most excellent read.
A great writer and great characters, just so sad there won’t be any new Tony Hillerman’s, but rereading the old ones like this is still a treat.
I enjoy learning about the Southwest and Navajo culture
You believe in the people, the story, the setting. Hillerman was a Master.

It’s been several years since I’ve read Hillerman’s books, but I enjoyed ALL of them. The characters provide a lot of insight into the lives of the Indian people and how they choose to live.
The first of a long Navajo Tribal police series by Tony HIllerman. Excellent read.
This whole series is great.
I have read all of Hillerman’s books and not one has ever failed to keep me reading late into the night. His characters are fleshed out and realistic. I lived in the Gallup area for a few years and I recognized the landscape of his books. I will reread the books again and again, they are enthralling.
I have read all of his books. Everyone kept my interest. If you have ever visited the area where the stories take place that adds additional interest to the stories.
All the Tony Hillerman books with characters Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn and later Manuelita are great, interesting insight into Native American cultures, plus murders to solve!
I really enjoy all of these books. they are very well written, the character development is great and the story keeps me involved for the entire book
All of Tony Hillerman’s books are great reads, fun and suspenseful, but also opening to the world of the Navajo with interesting, likable protagonists.
