“Brilliant…as fascinating as it is original.”—St. Louis Post-DispatchFrom New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman, the first novel in his series featuring Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn & Officer Jim Chee who encounter a bizarre case that borders between the supernatural and murderHomicide is always an abomination, but there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered … there is something exceptionally disturbing about the victim discovered in a high, lonely place—a corpse with a mouth full of sand—abandoned at a crime scene seemingly devoid of tracks or useful clues. Though it goes against his better judgment, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn cannot help but suspect the hand of a supernatural killer.
There is palpable evil in the air, and Leaphorn’s pursuit of a Wolf-Witch leads him where even the bravest men fear, on a chilling trail that winds perilously between mysticism and murder.

Tony has done it again. This is another excellent addition to the Saga.
Love all of his books
great series, great characters.
This is my favorite book by one of my favorite authors. It combines modern police work with traditional Navajo values and beliefs. The main character is both realistic and likable and makes you want to get to know him better. As both a policeman and a shaman in training, Jimmy Chee is an interesting and conflicted fellow, especially when the …
Love all of the Tony Hillerman series. It doesn’t get better then this series. Have read them all, and probably will read them again in the future. Will not disappoint you in any way. 5 stars all the way.
I love Hillerman’s descriptions of Navajo culture and the four corners region.
I’ve read all of this author’s books. If you are interested in Native American culture of the SW, realistic personal relationship issues, and enjoy mysteries that are not too gory, you will love reading his books.
Tony Hillerman’s main protagonists Leaphorn and Chee have been a part of my reading life for years. Having previously lived in New Mexico for 12 years, reading his books is the next best thing to being there.
I am so sorry he is no longer alive and writing. His daughter is trying, but not yet up to what Tony Hillerman did. Each one of his books is SO worth sharing with others.
Wish I could give him 10 stars. Hillerman’s story telling is much more than a murder mystery; he introduces the readers to cultures and people who are alive.
I was fortunate enough to have met him at an English conference and he asked us teachers what he could do to make his books more accessible in the classroom. We shouted GLOSSARY!! He had a …
Another author who never disappointed! Bonus is that all of the Hillerman books provide a learning opportunity about the Navajo people.

Great discriptions of southwest, interesting characters.
A great series and one from which you can learn.
Takes you into another culture, values, way of thinking and world not found in the white man’s eurocentric society.
Tony Hillerman is always fun. I’ve enjoyed many of his books.
Tony Hillerman has always presented his world in such vivid colors that when I have been out in the SouthWest we have looked for his landmarks
