Celebrated singer Genevieve Dumont is both a star and a smokescreen. An unwilling darling of the Nazis, the chanteuse’s position of privilege allows her to go undetected as an ally to the resistance.
When her estranged mother, Lillian de Rocheford, is captured by Nazis, Genevieve knows it won’t be long before the Gestapo succeeds in torturing information out of Lillian that will derail the upcoming allied invasion. The resistance movement is tasked with silencing her by any means necessary—including assassination. But Genevieve refuses to let her mother become yet one more victim of the war. Reuniting with her long-lost sister, she must find a way to navigate the perilous cross-currents of Occupied France undetected—and in time to save Lillian’s life.
In this heart-wrenching novel, bestselling author Karen Robards showcases the extraordinary lengths one goes to save their family from a German prison. A web of spies, the resistance and a vivid portrayal of Paris in wartime.

The Black Swan of Paris by Karen Robards is an excellent historical fiction from beginning to end. This novel also keeps the reader engaged and enthralled due to the mystery, suspense, and the romantic aspects that are added as well.
This book takes place in the thick of it: Paris under occupation in 1944. Genevieve Dumont is an excellent female protagonist. She is smart, strong, fiery, loyal, loving, flawed, and a fighter. I enjoyed her relationship and chemistry with Max. The things we do to fight for those we love and for what is right. She is truly brave.
I enjoyed the plot and the suspense associated with the attempt of survival during the women’s mission kept me on edge throughout.
I enjoyed the pace, the intricate and exciting plot, the cast of characters, and I truly did enjoy the ending.
This is an excellent WWII historical fiction novel and it is for anyone that loves a good plot, suspense, and anyone that loves to read about the impressive underdog of the Resistance in France during the Occupation.
Excellent 5/5 stars
Thank you NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
Beautifully written and completely absorbing. Genevieve is a broken but determined heroine in disguise, fooling the terrifying enemies surrounding her as she is immersed in the ugly belly of the Nazi occupation. Tension, secrets, and loyalty drive this gorgeous book until the very last page and I was transfixed by each riveting moment.
This book was excellent! It’s on my “read again someday list”!! I felt all the feels!
I’m a huge fan of historical fiction and this book just soared to the top of my list of favorites. I was rooting for Max and Genevieve the whole way through! The story moved along at a nice pace, with enough back and forth between memory and current happenings to fill in the blanks but not become burdensome. I am constantly in awe of what people did for the love of country during WWII!
Couldn’t even get 25% of the way into the book it was so terrible.
There was too much violence to be enjoyable.
Dazzling, tender, heartbreaking, romantic, and an utter whirlwind. Despite the typos that are often plagued in ARCs and the sometimes too modern phrasing, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Absolutely adored Genevieve and Max together.
