For LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch — hero, maverick, nighthawk — the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal.
The dead man, Billy Meadows, was a fellow Vietnam “tunnel rat” who fought side by side with him in a nightmare underground war that brought them to the depths of hell. Now, Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a … Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city to the tortuous link that must be uncovered, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit.
Joining with an enigmatic and seductive female FBI agent, pitted against enemies inside his own department, Bosch must make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, as he tracks down a killer whose true face will shock him.

Great story in the Bosch series, back when Bosch was still a Vietnam Vet, a “tunnel rat.” I always liked that part of his character which they have had to change to keep him from being to old for the TV series.
Michael Connelly is one of the best.
I love Harry Bosch. In spite of himself. He’s such a complex character. I’ve read almost all the books and especially remember this one. Maybe because I know the neighborhood. Just moves right along.
A good procedural and an excellent read.
The Black Echo was the first Michael Connelly book I read many years ago. I have been a big fan of his books and Detective Harry Bosch every since.
Great first book in the Harry Bosch series. Start here and enjoy the ride. Micheal Connelly is a master story teller and you will want to keep reading the the entire Harry Bosch collection.
Michael Connelly is the best
This was one of Michael Connelly’s early books and I’ve read every one since. Love Harry Bosch!
Harry Bosch is a character I have come to know and love. He never lets me down in his dogged pursuit of the bad guys, and I eagerly await each book. He is the guy in the white hat who is badly needed these days.
I have loved all of Mr. CONNOLLY’S books in this series.
LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch is a rich and authentic hero with flaws making this series addicting. Harry’s Vietnam experience provides background and enlightens the reader. Great series and characters
I love Harry Bosch. This is the book that started it all, so pleased I found it recently as a reissue paperback.
There is nothing to dislike about Bosch, a man who follows his own code with unwavering belief that his is the right way no matter what, even when the law might say otherwise.
That this stems from his days as a soldier in Vietnam …
Really enjoyed this book, just when you think you know who dunnit it twists keeps you guessing. Looking forward to reading some of his other books
The Black Echo
It’s Bosch. What can I add?
I read this book several years ago. Although I don’t remember a lot about it, I remembered the title immediately and that usually only happens when I’ve read a REALLY good book. I started the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly about 25 years ago, with THE LAST COYOTE, and I’ve followed both the author and the character ever since. Connelly …
The body in the drain pipe looks like a drug overdose, and everyone is willing to record it that way. Everyone except LAPD Homicide cop Harry Bosch, who thinks the scene is telling a different story – murder. Then he makes the shocking discover, he knows the victim, although he hasn’t seen the dead man since their days as tunnel rats in Vietnam. …
