For LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch — hero, maverick, nighthawk — the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal.
The dead man, Billy Meadows, was a fellow Vietnam “tunnel rat” who fought side by side with him in a nightmare underground war that brought them to the depths of hell. Now, Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a … Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city to the tortuous link that must be uncovered, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit.
Joining with an enigmatic and seductive female FBI agent, pitted against enemies inside his own department, Bosch must make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, as he tracks down a killer whose true face will shock him.

The book that started the Bosch series. It’s been a while since I read this book, but it was great. A good, in-depth police procedural with an interesting main character. I enjoyed the depictions of tunnel rats during the Vietnam War as well. It got me hooked on the series. Worth the read.
This is the first book in Connelly’s series about Detective Harry Bosch. Great world building and multi-layered characters make this an addictive series. Start here.
An addictive read. The more I read the more I wanted to read. Realistic, a bit dark at times, but wonderful!
Love the Bosch series.
This is the first in this series and got me hooked on the character, detective Harry Bosch. Connelly has a comfortable, easy-to-read writing style, keeping the reader interested in the case without too much boring detail or overly-complicated plotlines. The character is likeable, the action and suspense are satisfying, and the author’s wit keeps …
Despite it being the first book in the series, Connelly knew who Harry Bosch was from the very beginning. Compared to the later books it’s a little rough around the edges, but that’s a minor quibble. This book is a classic.
A very realistic crime detective story, and apparently the first in a long series of Detective Harry Bosch novels – and there are a lot of them. I have not read one that I have not liked yet, so now I have gone back to the beginning.
All of his works are excellent.
Got hooked on the show so I decided to try the novels. This was the first in the series. Does not disappoint.
All of the Bosch books are great.
One of the best debut novels I ever read. Better than The Martian and only bested by Every Dead Thing by John Connolly as thrillers go. This book is terrific and it is a terrific start to an amazing series. Connelly announces himself with this one and fans of thrillers and procedurals shouldn’t miss it. This is amazing storytelling meets amazing …
Love Harry! This is a page turner with great characters and an awesome storyline. I’ve read this multiple times.
Masterful first entry in Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly.
I’m a BIG fan of Bosch and have watched every episode of the Amazon Prime series. Reading the books is as exciting and entertaining.
Terrific book – Twists, turns and surprises all the way. If you’re not already hooked on Bosch, this is a great way to get started. You’ll definately be hooked after this one.
Anything written by Michael Connelly is an excellent read. Cannot recommend his work highly enough.
If it is Bosch, it’s good.
One of Michael Connelly’s best books.
I enjoy Harry Bosch and try to read all books about him.
I love Harry!!
