I was given an ARC by Netgalley and Beyond the Page publishing.
“The Black Cat Steps on a Crack” by Kay Finch the fourth book in the Bad Luck Cat Mystery series. I enjoyed this book and have purchased the previous books so I can start at the beginning and be all caught up.
Even though I haven’t read the previous books in this series, it didn’t cause a problem as this can be read as a stand-alone. I think this will be one of my favorite cat mystery series.
I like the Protagonist Sabrina Tate a mystery writer and her black cat Hitchcock who once again are at the center of a murder. I appreciated the focus the author put on the stigma associated with black cats as my mum was actually just telling me how in the UK they are lucky!
The characters are well developed and very likeable, such as her Aunt Rowe and who doesn’t love a cat named Hitchcock. I enjoyed the small town setting of Lavender, Texas
There are plenty of twists and turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. The book is engaging from start to finish, grabbing you from the very beginning. I cant wait for the fifth installment in this series, I recommend this to cozy lovers.
I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Beyond the Page and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my OWN.
First and foremost – Thank you Beyond the Page Publishing for picking up Kay Finch’s Bad Luck Cat Mystery series. I am beyond ecstatic to see Sabrina and Hitchcock continue their adventures. Congratulations, Kay!
A new library is being built and everyone is excited for the construction to finish and the library to open. During the construction, the new librarian dishes out orders to the construction crew left and right, leading to a temporary halt in the work. Then, the discovery of a body on the premises of the construction site, shuts the work down for good until the crime is solved. Sabrina finds herself investigating another murder where many people have the means, motive, opportunity to commit the act.
The Black Cat Steps on a Crack is a wonderful fourth cozy mystery in Kay Finch’s Bad Luck Cat Mystery series. The plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The entire book will engage the reader from beginning to end. The descriptive content makes visualizing the scenes an easy task. The novel is fast paced and enjoyable. The motive for the murder, as well as who did it, was cleverly disguised.
All of the characters are written with realism. The character development continues with the main characters and the addition of new characters. We aren’t bogged down with unnecessary details or boring character biographies. We receive the right amount of detail and description for each character. The conversations flow smoothly and are realistic. They flow so well that you think you’re standing nearby involved in the topic of discussion. I’m excited to be back in Texas with Sabrina and Hitchcock and I hope to be able to visit again!
I was provided a copy of this book to read.
The Black Cat Steps on a Crack is another exciting installment in Finch’s Bad Luck Cat mystery series. I always find myself looking forward to reading the next installment in this series, and this book was definitely worth the wait. Determined to focus on her own mystery that she is writing, Sabrina finds herself distracted when her cat, Hitchcock, discovers another dead body. When a friend of Sabrina’s is named a top suspect, Sabrina has no choice but to try and solve this mystery herself.
Finch does a great job at setting up a compelling mystery with this one, and the book captures your attention from the beginning and never lets go. I loved seeing my favorite secondary characters back again especially Aunt Rowe who finds some new adventures to get herself into much to Sabrina’s dismay. Having a close friend as a suspect really made the stakes higher for Sabrina and sets up a good conflict between Sabrina and the police department. Overall The Black Cat Steps on a Crack was an entertaining read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Sabrina and Hitchcock’s next adventure.
Received a copy of The Black Cat Steps on a Crack through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Sabrina lives in Lavender, Texas with her black cat Hitchcock. Sabrina is a budding author with her first book due out in the fall. She’s thrilled that the town is getting a new library. The new librarian, Jane Alcott, is an enthusiastic and energetic person. And it turns out after she’s murdered, her past is a mystery.
Sabrina and her “bad-luck” cat are out to solve this mystery. This is book 4 in the series but my first. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This was a great book! It can be a stand alone but I recommend reading the 3 before this one. Sabrina Tate is trying to solve a murder of the towns new librarian . Her cat Hitchcock is right by her side and in the thick of things too. And to make matters worse Sabrina’s bff Ty’s husband is named the prime suspect. Can she solve this murder and save her friends? Or is she in too deep and at risk for ending up like the victim! Once you start reading this you won’t be able to put it down until finished.
There was a murder in town and mystery writer Sabrina Tate can’t resist investigating. There seems to be a lot of possible suspects but things get even more interesting when Sabrina finds out that the victim has no proof of life before the past year with no friends, no family but plenty of money.
A well written plot guides us through a maze of suspects but it is impossible to figure out the guilty person until the very end. My favorite character is Hitchcock. He is a black cat that has a talent for sniffing out trouble.
Although this is the fourth book in A Bad Luck Cat Mystery it could easily be read as a stand alone. Thanks to Beyond the Page and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.
This was a surprise! Sabrina is trying to write a mystery, but she is easily distracted, especially when there is a murder and her Aunt Rowe is thinking about trying a zip line, etc. Aunt Rowe owns a bunch of cottages that she rents out to tourists. Sabrina lives in one of them with her black cat Hitchcock. Rowe’s current guests are a group of ladies who want to scrapbook and also fulfill some bucket list items. Hitchcock finds the town librarian murdered (before the library construction is even done). Sabrina is pulled into the mystery as she tries to prove the innocence of her friends husband and also to defend Hitchcock and his reputation as a bad luck cat.
The scrapbook ladies and Aunt Rowe are a hoot. I liked the characters, and even though this is the fourth book in the series, it is my first by this author. I didn’t get lost and was able to figure out who was who and some of the background that was probably introduced in earlier books. The story is entertaining and the writing style is easy-to-read. I didn’t catch on to the killer until the big reveal.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read a new author!

Great characters! Fast paced! Full of twists and red herrings! Who would think that becoming the new librarian in the small town of Lavender, Texas would lead to being murdered? Or that a cat would be the better sleuth by first finding the body and later in finding important clues? I loved it, even though cats aren’t my favorite (allergic).
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
