Billionaire celebrity chef Christopher Denton is back in his hometown, hoping to win a local baking contest and gain some much-needed publicity before launching his new show. The only possible glitch in the plan is knowing Mara Lancaster, the girl who broke his heart back in high school, is his competition. Though his pulse is racing in that old familiar way, he plays it cool, not wanting Mara to … to know how much seeing her has affected him. Maybe if he acts like he doesn’t care, his traitorous heart will listen. But as the competition heats up, so do his thoughts about her. Mara’s even more gorgeous now and he’s finding it difficult to keep his eyes—and his hands—off her.
Mara has to win the Christmas gingerbread house competition. This isn’t a game to her: it’s her entire future, because she needs the prize money to start her own bakery. Nothing will get in the way of that dream. Certainly not an egotistical, bad boy billionaire chef, even if he makes her blood sizzle and her mind turn to cookie batter—just like he did when they were teenagers. She can’t deny their attraction, though, and the more time they spend together, the more Mara sees the boy she loved before accidentally breaking his heart. And she likes what she sees. Chris is kind and really a bit of a softy, despite his hard exterior.
But just when Mara thinks things between her and Chris might end sweetly, her ex shows up on the scene and leaves Mara wondering if it will all crumble—just like a gingerbread house…

This story has all the sweet feels for any good holiday romance. It’s also got a whole lot of spice, as the chemistry between Chris and Mara is combustible. Anyone who knows me, knows I love seeing a second chance come to fruition. This pair had such an awful ending to their first one, they desperately needed to get another shot at making it right. I had so much fun watching Chris and Mara rekindle the love they used to feel. The only real complaint I have, is that Chris took the blame for everything that went wrong between them. I personally believe that Mara is just as much to blame for how their rift came about, and I would have loved to see her own up to her part in it. I kind of hate that the series is over now. I’ve loved getting to know the whole extended Denton family and I’m going to miss them.

Chris Cooks and Mara Lancaster were a couple in high school. They thought they could conquer the world as long as they were together. That was until Chris saw something that really made him mad. He was so mad at Mara. He thought he would never get over the shock.
Ten years later, Chris Cooks came back to his hometown for a bake off to win the trophy. He did not have any idea who the other contestant was so to his surprise he was very shocked. There stood Mara and she has decided she is going to win the contest for her hometown.
They started out hating each other then as the first day came to an end, they got over the hate for just a few hours. Will Chris and Mara hit it off or will they go back to hating each other?

This Christmas romance between Chris and Mara definitely has sexual tension and unresolved emotional issues that make for sizzling entertainment. I didn’t feel as much Christmas spirit in this story as I did in the previous ones in this series even though there’s gingerbread houses, hot chocolate and a wreath. Still, it’s a second chance for Chris and Mara to put aside some trust issues and see what the magic of Christmas brings…dreams coming true when you don’t expect them.

I like when stories are changed up a little from the norm. In this case, it wasn’t the female that was left heartbroken, she was the one that did the breaking. But now Chris and Mara see each other again and have to compete against each other. It’s hard to understand what happened between them when their chemistry is so strong but as the story develops you realize what happened and that their connection is still undeniable. It was a fun read.

Chris Denton’s limo slowed to a stop in front of the Glenford Community Center and the press crowded in. The hometown boy was back to compete in the annual gingerbread baking competition which will give him publicity for launching his new TV show. Mara Lancaster, his high school sweetheart and the girl who broke his heart, was also competing, hoping to start off her new career by using the winnings to fund her own bakery business. Winning was crucial for both of them.
As things heat up in the kitchen, it isn’t as clear that both have moved on after the 10 years since their breakup. The chemistry back then seems to still be sizzling hot and only the pain and betrayal keep them cautious. Is there a way to rebuild the broken trust? Can they give what they had a second chance? Or will the reappearance of her ex, Dan Montey, be too much to deal with as they begin to heal and try to move forward? Without trust, there is nothing to hold them together; and Chris’ jealousy makes it difficult to believe in what he could have again with Mara.
I love this author’s stories! She has a real talent with bringing out emotions that feel so real for the reader, which makes the characters more relatable. The story line was well-paced and intriguing enough to draw the reader in, with both of the characters desperately needing to win the competition and yet struggling with their resurging feelings. Grab your copy and see if they can find their HEA.
