I liked this book but does remind me of the Caas books. Spoiler alert – don’t read if you don’t want to know what happens – but I didn’t like that she gave up everything for this boy and then the next chapter he dies! Come on! I understand that bad things happen but why kill him right away?
3.5 stars
I loved the Selection series, and had high hopes for this book, despite what many reviews say about it. While it wasn’t Selection level, in my opinion, I did enjoy some aspects of the story, and I am interested in seeing what happens next, after such a tragic ending.
It was kind of predictable until the end
I was nervous to read this at first because I’ve heard so many bad reviews on it. But I actually really enjoyed it…until the end! The end was just totally unexpected which I guess is good in a way but I just want to know what happens! This book is NOT like the Selection, it has a very different feel to it. I feel like the characters could’ve been developed more, especially Silas. But overall I thought it was an exciting story, and I can’t wait until the Betrayed comes out!
This is the perfect book to follow “The Selection” series. I can’t wait for the next one to come out!
The Betrothed is the first book in a new duologie by Kiera Cass. I have loved her serie The Selection and couldn’t wait to read a new book by her.
Lady Hollis as grew up in Keresken Castle and her as well as other girls of nobility hope to gain the king attention. But when this one declare is love for her, she’s shocked. After spending more time with him, she soon realize that falling in love with the king and the idea of becomming queen is to reality. When she meets a commoner for another kingdom, this one made her realize that the path of queen may not be for her.
Took me a while to get into it. But ends up really like it. And with the last couple of chapters, really looking foward to read the sequel.
The book read like you were coming into the middle of a story. I had to double check that I wasn’t missing a first installment. The foundation of the story felt like it was missing and with it my connection to the characters.
Kiera Cass is most definitely one of my favorite authors, and she did not disappoint with this book! One of the things I liked was that Hollis is relatable. She likes books like the majority, if not all, of us here do, and her embracing (or at least wanting to embrace) her playful and unladylike side is something that I could relate to. Hollis being wealthy and expected to behave like a proper lady, but then having fun and expressing herself even if it isn’t in a proper way was one of my absolute favorite things about her. Hollis is my favorite character and I could not be more pleased with her personality. I think she developed quite a bit as a character throughout the book, and it helped me form a stronger connection with her.
I am all here for how there was a good amount of time where it was just Hollis and King Jameson before the other love interest was introduced. It allowed me to get a sense of her relationship with the king, and then see how it was different between her and the new love interest. Hollis’s relationship with both men was unique and I do think that she made the right choice in the end, and it showed character. There could have been more on her relationship with them so that we could get a better sense and/or grasp on how deep each of their affections went. I believe that we saw how deep Jameson’s feelings were towards her, but I just needed more from the new love interest. It was very much a love at first sight type feeling, and I needed to get to know him more. I do LOVE how the village boy is introduced. I found it unique and I didn’t think that it would happen the way it did.
I also just want to add that I love how the story is set up in the beginning! I find it to be strong and it grabbed my attention.
This book is an easy, light read and all I have to say is “WOW”. I truly did miss Cass’s stories and I cannot wait to see what else she cooks up, and how this story continues to play out. ESPECIALLY AFTER THIS ENDING!!! Why would you do this Kiera, WHY?! It was so unexpected and I am HERE FOR IT.
This book was a disappointment. The tagline for the book made for a promising plot, but it turned out to be underwhelming. There was no characterization of either the King or the Boy who claimed Hollis’s heart. By the end of the book, I did not know either of the love interests very well (and she marries one of them after having like 3 short conversations with him). Also the end was not what I expected it to be. I was hoping for more romance, but was left disappointed. This was a letdown when compared to The Selection series by the same author. If there is going to be another book, I might only read it just so I can say I finished the series.
All the while I was reading this I was thinking, this is so refreshing. A nice quick and easy read about a girl and her life. No intense action or crazy confusing back stories. Just nice and light.
And then in typical Kiera Cass fashion, she just decided to ruin my life with feels. This one will take a while to recover from.
The interesting thing about this book, is once you reach the end, it almost feels like this whole thing is a prologue. The next book is going to be crazy I can tell.
I was such a fan of Kiera Cass’ The Selection series back when they first came out, and a couple years ago, The Siren was on the top of my list for one of the best books I’d read that year. All that being said, I just don’t think The Betrothed was one of her best. Cass usually excels with characterization, but most of the characters here fell incredibly flat for me. The world was hard to believe in and connect to, and Hollis was not a very realistic character – her naivety alone was deeply frustrating and felt out of place. I recognize Cass usually writes for a younger audience, so perhaps this book was intended for an age group I’m no longer in, but based on some of her choices with the plot, I think Cass was trying to go for something that just didn’t quite land.
