Beautiful, headstrong Madeleine of Elford has picked her husband. Unfortunately her family disagrees. When her father organizes a tournament to parade alternative suitors in front of Madeleine, she is outraged but determined to stay true. Childhood nemesis, Thomas of Draycott, arrives at Elford and from the moment they meet again, tests her resolve. A skilled warrior, handsome and honorable, … honorable, Thomas is her father’s favorite, and only has to be near Madeleine for sparks of all kinds to ignite.
Thomas remembers Madeleine well from fostering at Elford, and even his desperate need for a rich wife would not persuade him to woo a woman who hates him. Except Madeleine is all grown up and Thomas is experiencing strong feelings of a most inconvenient kind. And Madeleine doesn’t appear to hate him after all.
Battle lines are blurred, as enemies become lovers, in the Betrothal Melee.

This is a fun enemy – to – lovers romance, Regency style. The author really sets the stage and pulls you into the story from the very beginning. I really loved the witty banter between the characters which made for some great humorous moments. Madeleine and Thomas were a great couple and their chemistry was undeniable. This was my first time reading one of Ms. Hegger’s books and I’m really glad I did. This is a great start to what looks to be a wonderful series. Looking forward to the next book!

Great romantic tale of yore
Loved these complex characters and their journey of revelation for Madeleine and towards true love for both her and Thomas. Lady Maddy has been in love with Robert most of her life but is it true love? Not until she meets Thomas do things become clear(ish) and she struggles to find what real love is. Great humor, contests, and a bit of danger to round things out. I really enjoyed this novel by Sarah Hegger and look forward to more.

Loved this very interesting romance with Lady Madeleine and Sir Thomas. When he father get killed when he was a young boy Lady Madeleine’s father took him in to train him but they never git along. Now years later her father Sir Richard is hosting a tournament to find her a husband and Thomas has been invited in hopes of winning the prize money but not sure he wants Madeleine. This is a well written book with very interesting plot and the romance was pretty hot. Enemies to lovers story was everything you could hope for. I was sad when the book ended.
This was a very good read. The story was enjoyable and the characters likable. Plenty of sparks fly between Thomas and Madeleine in this cute enemies to lovers romance. The plot is engaging and offers a fun blend of emotion, humor, drama and suspense. I’m really looking forward to more from this series. This is my freely posted, frank review.
What happens when two people who thought they didn’t like each other have undeniable chemistry? That is exactly what Madeleine of Elford and Thomas of Draycott have to deal with. Plus through in a dash of misguided love, abduction, and attempted murdered.
This was a incredibly well written story that submerses a reader. I felt like I was there in the halls of Elford. Beyond the writing style the characters were engaging and addictive. You won’t be able to wait to see what other antics they get up to in future books. One hundred percent recommend!
I received this book from the publisher/author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.
This is my first book by Sarah Hegger and it is a fun enemies-to-lovers historical romance filled with angst, humor, passion, and attempted murder.
Lady Madeleine’s father, Sir Richard, is hosting a tournament to find her a husband, but she already loves her childhood friend, Robert, to her family’s dismay. When her childhood antagonist, Sir Thomas of Draycott, shows up at the tourney proceeding to win the games quickly and skillfully, he threatens her feelings and she finds passion in his arms.
Sir Thomas owes his life to Sir Richard of Elford and was not intending to go to the tournament nor was he seeking a wife, but his long-time friend and sly priest Peter had other plans. When they were kids, Maddy stood up for her brother Edward by biting Thomas and pushing him in the water. There was no love lost between them until the challenge begins and sparks fly.
Overall, this is a fast-paced, funny and fiery romance with a feisty and stubborn heroine and a noble and honorable hero. I enjoyed the teasing and flirting between Thomas and Maddy. My favorite scene was during the dance when Thomas warned Maddy he was a horrible dancer and proceeded to show her how horrible to her enjoyment. I look forward to hearing more about Maddy’s brother, Edward and his wife Catriona as well as Maddy’s sister, Adelaide. Recommend highly!
Thank you to Ms. Hegger for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
The Betrothal Melee by Sarah Hegger was a delight to read. The story had some twists and turns and an awesome ending. The storytelling is so vivid, I felt I was right there with the characters and rooting for them. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is the first book in the Love and War Series, a Historical Romance. This is a beautiful and entertaining enemies to lovers. Madeleine of Elford and Thomas of Draycott’s story is fun, intricate, passionate, and fast-paced, with a little suspense. Maddy is such a beautiful and feisty character! Thomas, an honorable warrior, is handsome. The story has an impressive cast of supporting characters (I need a chart!). They are intriguing, and they have an important part in this story. I need to know more about some of them! This story is absolutely delightful. I loved it! If you like Historical Romance, this one is for you! Looking forward to read the next installment in the Series. I also loved the free bonus novella, The Marriage Parley, the prequel to this Series (Richard and Margaret’s story). Sarah Hegger never disappoints. I love her writing.
Loved this book! Sarah’s style of writing is awesome! I loved the prequel to this and was delighted to read the story of Madeline and Thomas. The addition of Sir Richard and Lady Margaret made it all better! Can’t wait to read the next installment! This genre has to be one of my favorites!
