You can’t go wrong with a Robyn Carr book and this one did not disappoint!
The Best of Us is the fourth installment in Robyn Carr’s contemporary romance series titled Sullivan’s Crossing. Being a Robyn Carr newbie, I didn’t know I was reading this book out of order until after the fact which is a testament to this series along with Carr’s writing. Although I can’t speak for her other books, The Best of Us works perfectly as a standalone novel…but of course I will be playing catch up very, very soon.
I found The Best of Us to be engaging, emotional, complex, sexy, fun and filled with gorgeous Colorado settings that become characters in their own right. I’m looking forward to the next book…and all the ones that came before. Check it out.
THE BEST OF US Robyn Carr
One thing in my life is a given—when a book from Robyn Carr shows up in the mail, either a mail-order purchase or an ARC from the author—whatever I have or had planned is going to get shelved for the duration. An ARC of THE BEST OF US arrived on Wednesday, and I am so thankful this Thanksgiving that no one was coming for dinner the next day. I threw the stuffed chicken in the oven (two people do not need a turkey!) and sat down with my new book.
I have never, not once, been disappointed by anything Robyn Carr has written. She weaves pure gold with her perfectly imperfect characters, with totally plausible situations that ring as true as real life, and stories that always keep me racing to the finish where I know they’ll leave me sighing and smiling.
THE BEST OF US is my favorite in the Sullivan’s Crossing series so far, but I think I’ve felt that way about every single one of Robyn’s books, no matter the series. Dr. Leigh Culver is a doctor new to Timberlake, Colorado, Rob Shandon a single dad of two teenaged boys and owner of the local pub. When their paths cross, the chemistry is off the charts even though neither one of them is looking for anything serious.
Then there’s Leigh’s Aunt Helen who raised Leigh after her mother died when Leigh was a child. Helen is a successful mystery author, a woman who loves her freedom and independence now that Leigh is grown and enjoying her own independence as a successful doctor. When Helen comes to visit, Leigh takes her out to Sullivan’s Crossing, which is the hub around which all the stories in this series spin, where Helen meets someone who threatens all that hard-won independence.
Following these two disparate couples as they meander their way into love makes for a most enjoyable read. I love how Robyn manages, in her beautifully written prose, to create such perfectly developed characters with individual voices, desires, and personalities. I almost always read her books twice because I haven’t the patience to read them slowly and thoroughly the first time through, and it’s the second read where I relax and enjoy the process, and find even more to love about the story.
As always, I give this newest from Robyn Carr the very highest recommendation possible. If you’ve not read the others in the series, it’s not a problem. This story stands well on its own, but I imagine you’ll be looking for the others as soon as you finish THE BEST OF US.
Get a cup of hot chocolate and a nice fluffy blanket and settle down to read one of the most romantic books in the world!!! Robyn Carr has done it again folks! Love is in the air. Enjoy!
Robyn Carr is probably my favorite author and I’ve read everything she’s written, I hope. Her stories draw you in with how realistic they are, the characters are very authentic (you know someone just like at least of them), and the locale of each story gives you a accurate feel for that part of the country (and you want to visit there or maybe move there). I look forward to each new book and want to have another visit with characters from a previous book.
I loved this book and the Sullivan’s Crossing series; it just took me a while to find what I wanted to say about this story. I think of TBOU as a ‘two-fer’: We have the story about Dr. Leigh Culver and Rob Shandon (who owns the local pub in town) and Helen Culver (the aunt who raised Leigh) and Sully Sullivan (yes, of Sullivan’s Crossing).
Leigh has never been married and Rob’s a widower with two teenage sons. These two have known one another, since Leigh has been in town, but their book ‘meet-cute’ is a riot. Love Rob’s sons! Just the right amount of sass and snark in these two – in differing amounts of course – to make them lovable, imho. I loved Leigh’s and Rob’s story; I thought Leigh needed a kick in the pants sometimes, but she’s really a good person. Rob is adorable, especially when he has to ‘fess up to his sons about an “oops”. Pretty funny. Their story, and that of Rob’s family, really touched me. For me, he came across as more…lovable than Leigh but if her personality was any different, it wouldn’t make a good read.
Helen and Sully’s story is a hoot. I love that they are older and have a love story of their own. Sully is a character in all the books, of course, and he is a wily old codger! I absolutely adore him. The conversations he has with Helen are hilarious. She is an author, one who concocts murder and mayhem in her books, and the banter is often hilarious. I guess most spouses/S.O.’s of writers always wonder, a bit, if the stories are anything about them…or what may happen TO them. It was also nice to read about older love and how it can sweep you off your feet as well.
Once again, Ms. Carr has created a place where I’d love to visit and/or live. It was a great book and I hope she finds more folks to write about in Sullivan’s Crossing.
I like Robyn Carr’s books. She keeps you interested with great characters.
Robyn Carr’s 4th novel in the Sullivan’s Crossing series is the best one yet. The Best of Us twines three romances. – Dr. Leigh Culver and widower, Rob Shandon are mature adults. Rob’s son, Finn, and his girlfriend, Maia, are high-school seniors, and (my personal favorite. Guess why?) Leigh’s Aunt Helen and Sully are chronologically-gifted adults.
The stories are woven into the life of Sullivan’s Crossing, a small town in Colorado near the Continental Divide.
The three romances kept me reading long past my bedtime. I love a story that’s too good to put down. Robyn’s work is like a banquet. So many flavors and different stories meld together into a feast for my heart.
I love the characters are inter woven through the series.
I love anything this author writes. She is one of my favorite. I love trilogy books. Her Virgin River series was incredible for me.
I like all her stuff
This entire series is wonderful. I love the characters and the plots are interesting and a feel good read.
Robyn Carr never fails to deliver. I love all the characters old and new. Enjoyed this book and look forward to more.
I like this book and others in the series. Good stories and easy read with happy endings.
This is another wonderful book in the Sullivan’s Crossing series-I’m not going into the story itself, you can read other reviews for that & read the book.
The characters were well written with real types of difficult life situations. I could relate to several of the characters struggles for a second chance for an HEA.
It was funny, heartwarming & realistic in many ways realizing it’s a story for our entertainment with no Cliffhanger!
I’ve been a fan of Robyn Carr for quite a while & will continue to read her stories-I’m starting “The Country Guesthouse” by Ms. Carr next.
My subjective review: it was an interesting story. I did like it; however, the plot line and reasons behind it for me weren’t as empowering, intense, or understandable as the previous stories in this series. The reasons behind the female characters behavior seemed a bit of a stretch to me, almost to the point of overkill. I love the characters just as much, though, Especially Rob and his family.
Also, after the huge storyline with the oldest son and his girlfriend, they just seemed to disappear. There were get-togethers, but she was never mentioned again, which I thought was quite odd.
Read the Sullivan’s Crosslng novels in order. The characters will become good friends.
I’ve yet to read a robyn Carr book that I did not like and could actually put down. There is something so simplistic in her writing that I sit down and just escape into a book I’d love to be in. Her series are fantastic and this is yet another. You can pick up anywhere in her series, though first to last is usually best
I enjoy all of Robyn Carr’s books. Her characters are always interesting and mostly good people
I love all of Robin Carr’s books.
