This year’s pageant is definitely like no other, but maybe that’s exactly what makes it so special.Laughs abound in this bestselling Christmas classic by Barbara Robinson! The Best Christmas Pageant Ever follows the outrageous shenanigans of the Herdman siblings, or “the worst kids in the history of the world.”The siblings take over the annual Christmas pageant in a hilarious yet heartwarming … pageant in a hilarious yet heartwarming tale involving the Three Wise Men, a ham, scared shepherds, and six rowdy kids. You and your family will laugh along with this funny story, perfect for independent reading or read-aloud sharing.
Ralph, Imogene, Leroy, Claude, Ollie, and Gladys Herdman are an awful bunch. They set fire to Fred Shoemaker’s toolshed, blackmailed Wanda Pierce to get her charm bracelet, and smacked Alice Wendelken across the head. And that’s just the start! When the Herdmans show up at church for the free snacks and suddenly take over the Christmas pageant, the other kids are shocked.
It’s obvious that they’re up to no good. But Christmas magic is all around and the Herdmans, who have never heard the Christmas story before, start to reimagine it in their own way.

A short read with a great message. It was also made into a TV movie starring Loretta Swit. Hilarious antics of the Herdeman family as they take over the local church’s Christmas pageant by bullying and trickery. Definitely lets you see a different perspective and will warm your heart for Christmas!
Awesome book!! Remember reading it in grade school and still love it today!! Shows the meaning of Christmas and that no one is beyond Gods love.
I loved this book as a child and it’s still a holiday favorite.
Hey! Unto you a child is born!
This is my very favorite Christmas book of all time. I read it every year. I love that there is a religious story about Christmas that is laugh at loud funny and kindly irreverent about church traditions that easily can become a rut. I cry every time as the narrator sees the scruffy Herdman girl dressed as Mary …
What a cute middle grade Christmas story. I remember this being read to me when I was in school. I love it so much. It is perfect for kids and adults.
This book is a Christmas story anyone of any age can enjoy. It’s a great story to read together as a family. Merry Christmas!
What makes a Christmas pageant memorable? For some it’s the person they know in the cast, or the pageant director, or the time honored story it represents…for others..well, you have to experience it for yourself. Sometime small things can make your see traditional things in a whole new light. I read this book to my grandchildren, and their …
On the “kids’ book list.” But why should the kids have all the fun? This is a heart warming book about acceptance and tolerance. It is best read aloud with two or three (or more) kids in hearing distance. If you have to read it alone, don’t feel bad about laughing out loud when you feel like it.. I read it every year about this time.
What a delightful holiday book that made me laugh uncontrollably. A must read for families.
Just such a fun book for young and old, especially at the holidays and most especially if you’ve ever done a children’s Christmas pageant. 🙂
An oldie but a goodie. Good readers can knock it out in an hour or two, and it’s well-spent. I was once going to do a stage production of this book but it didn’t work out; I’d still do it! It’s a delightful Christmas book (NOT “holiday,” be warned if you haven’t read it before). Highly recommended.
