London 1884. A culprit is on the run after a fatal poisoning in Bermondsey. It’s not long before they’re outwitted and no one is safe. Penny and Inspector James Blakely must avoid the red herrings and track … herrings and track down the manipulative poisoner.
But could there be more than one?

Great book
I enjoy the penny green mystery
How could someone get away with killing several husbands? Was it really the wife — or someone else?
Excellent “whodunit”. A new favorite author who kept me in the dark until the very last page.
Thank you!!!
I love Penny! She is such a greatly created character.
this is one of the best series of historical mysteries. the pinnacle!! i LOVE a fabulous historical mystery that is well researched and full spectacular characters and steeped in the time period chosen.
Penny and James once again are a team (as much as a reporter and police inspector can be a team) as they try to track down Catherine Curran, a woman who has murdered four of her husbands. Of course, the subplot is that of James’ impending marriage to Charlotte despite his love for Penny. As usual the book has many twists and turns. The author is a fair writer though I found the characters’ conversations pedestrian. Even the dialogue between Penny and James was stilted. A third thread winding through the story was that of Francis (who also loves Penny) in Colombia, looking for Penny’s father. A pretty good book, this sixth book in the series was satisfying if not great.
Enjoyable mystery
I have read the other books in this series and really enjoyed them. This one was not as entertaining and a slow read for me. The story not as engaging as the others and I wasn’t really interested. I finished the book but I didn’t feel it was up the the standards set by the others in this series.
I enjoyed the entire series and hope there will be more. Interesting plots and series development.
Have read the whole series and enjoyed them all.
I just finished reading this book. It’s the sixth in the Penny Green series about a news reporter in Victorian England and a Scotland Yard detective named James Blakely.
I thought the book was a little long for a mystery, but there were a lot of twists and turns during the man (or woman) hunt that made it all pretty interesting. Nearly impossible, at least for me, to figure out what was going on.
There are two sub-plots both involving Penny’s personal life, but they don’t intrude at all on the main story.
I’ll most likely be continuing on with this series at some point.
