The Twentieth-Anniversary Edition of the First Novel of the Acclaimed Mary Russell Series by Edgar Award–Winning Author Laurie R. King. An Agatha Award Best Novel Nominee • Named One of the Century’s Best 100 Mysteries by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles … in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. They are soon called to Wales to help Scotland Yard find the kidnapped daughter of an American senator, a case of international significance with clues that dip deep into Holmes’s past. Full of brilliant deduction, disguises, and danger, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, the first book of the Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries, is “remarkably beguiling” (The Boston Globe).

Enjoyed a woman being Holmes’ intellectual equal. And the mysteries were absorbing. I enjoy the series very much and willingly ignore how unlikely a romance between Holmes and a woman young enough to be his daughter, because I enjoy the dialogue between them so much.
This is a great series for fans of Sherlock and non-fans alike. The characters are engaging and well-developed, the setting are authentic and exotic and the story lines original. It is truly one of my favorite series and I look forward to each new book with much anticipation.
The best Sherlock series after Doyle!
I love anything written by Laurie R. King. You will be entertained and enlightened
by reading her books.
I enjoyed this take off of Sherlock Holmes. A nice little escape.
At the end, I was so pleased that I read this book.
I loved this new twist on Sherlock Holmes years after his partnership with Dr. Watson. Wonderful characters, a fun read.
Laurie R. King’s ‘Mary Russell’ series is WONDERFUL! First — and most importantly — it’s amazingly well-written. Mary is an amazing character. It’s so easy to imagine her as a part of the Sherlock Holmes world. Kudos to Laurie for the research done to bring the time period vividly alive. I’m a serious fan who loves each one of these novels in the series.
There are no words to describe how much I loved this book (and its subsequent sequels). For anyone who loves Sherlock Holmes in all his glory, they will love watching him meet his match in the very modern, very 20th-century, Mary Russell. I could not put this book down once I started it, and had it finished within just a few days. I loved every minute of it!
I’m a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and was skeptical about the introduction of Mary Russell as a much younger wife. Turns out that was wrong. A great start to a wonderful series.
This book rekindled my love of reading. I love the whole series.
The first is a masterful series. A young girl who is Sherlock Holmes intellectual match. I’m hooked.
What’s not to like. You’ve got Holmes and a clever girl, witty repartee, a good plot, and all things one would expect in a Holmes story. Good cleaan fun!
This is the first time we meet Mary Russell who ends up in subsequent volumes marrying Holmes and leading him on spectacular adventures that Conan Doyle could never have contemplated.
Enjoyed the series.
Absolutely great – the author is SUCH a great writer!
I was there, heart and mind –
Really terrific story telling.

I need to find more of them to read.
I love this series of books! Wish there were more!
I am a huge fan of all versions of Sherlock Holmes. I read the book, saw the movie, and really liked all the information about bee keeping. The ending was so suspenseful.
