The Twentieth-Anniversary Edition of the First Novel of the Acclaimed Mary Russell Series by Edgar Award–Winning Author Laurie R. King. An Agatha Award Best Novel Nominee • Named One of the Century’s Best 100 Mysteries by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles … in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. They are soon called to Wales to help Scotland Yard find the kidnapped daughter of an American senator, a case of international significance with clues that dip deep into Holmes’s past. Full of brilliant deduction, disguises, and danger, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, the first book of the Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries, is “remarkably beguiling” (The Boston Globe).

I enjoyed reading this book. There was enough narrative to sink into the story.
Tortured origin to link the main character to Shetlock Holmes.
Really enjoyed this one, she is one of my favorite authors right now, shopping around for all of her books.
Good in the Sherlock genre. Into of a new female detective
An original approach. Well written.
What a fabulous way to continue the legendary Sherlock Holmes as an older man who comes across young Mary Russell and recognizes her intellect and talents can be as great or greater than his. She sees that what he teaches will lift her from an emotionally crushing guardian and a personal tragedy that she can’t get past. Each book gets better, more revealing, indepth looks at historical periods and events, like the Suffragettes, WWII for the British, Jerusalem, India. Read!
Laurie King’s first book in a twist on Sherlock Holmes equal to the originals. I have read the book more than once and just finished listening to the Audible version. It does not get old.
somehow I had missed this, the first in the Holmes and Russel series. Author really did a great job introducing these characters so solidly, and has continued to satisfy ever since.
The Mary Russell Sherlock Holmes series is writing at its best. I just wish they were longer so I could stay in the stories longer
Laurie R. King is so clever, taking a wonderful character, Sherlock Holmes, and in this series he takes on an apprentice, a young girl, an teaches her all manner of wonderful things – not just bees. I have read all the books in this series and they are entertaining, delightful, frightening..well worth taking the time to get to know Sherlock and Mary!
Great series!
This first of the Holmes/Russell novels is still one of my favorites. The concept was startling and original and worked for me, a lover of detective novels, of Sherlock Holmes, and of women gaining new footholds as actors (rather than damsels in distress). Recommended!
Enjoyed looking at Sherlock Holmes from a different perspective
A great twist on Sherlock Holmes theme.
In The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, Laurie R. King takes us along for a ride asking what if an older Sherlock Holmes took on a young woman as an assistant in crime solving? The young woman, Mary Russell, is as brilliant, resourceful, and as stubborn as the legendary Holmes. As time passes, they work on cases of greater significance until they come up against a criminal mind every bit as cunning as theirs. Will it be the last case Holmes and Russell ever work? Only in working together under the most desperate of circumstances can they prevail.
If you’re a fan of Holmes, you’ll enjoy this book. King does the mythology of the investigator complete justice and, in Mary Russell, opens the door for a worthy successor.
I love this Mary Russell series. This first one describes the beginnings of the relationship between her and Sherlock Holmes. I read another in which their relationship was already that of husband and wife and I was hooked. However, I did not realize until reading this book that she was ateenager when they met. It is clear that they are of like minds and intelligence and thus the connection.
I I don’t know what else to say other than this series is my all time favorite. It just gets better and better. Thank you Laurie R King
I would recommend all Laurie King’s Sherlock Holmes books
Very well-written with a terrific protagonist. I look forward to reading more of this series.
A refreshing twist on the Sherlock Holmes canon. (Set after the majority of the Arthur Conan Doyle novels and stories.)
