Will past secrets destroy their future?
Former Detective Leda Bellini, AKA Lisa Belmont, has had enough of witness protection. Determined to start a new life on her terms, she shifts into her swan form, ditches her security detail, and heads to Moon Mist manor, a resort island in Cat’s Paw Cove, Florida. Somehow, the owner knows her true identity and has been expecting her. Leda is blown … her true identity and has been expecting her. Leda is blown away (literally) when she finds herself and a mysterious cat named Davy transported back in time to the year 1717 and into the arms of a pirate with hypnotic emerald eyes. Being trapped in the past may be just the sort of adventure she’s been yearning for.
Disgraced Royal Navy Captain Drake Reid misread a command during the Jacobite rebellion that cost him everything. His only shot at redemption is to pose as a pirate and retrieve the magical Avalon roses for the king. Blown off course by a storm, his ship misses St. Augustine where the Spanish are rumored to have brought the priceless treasure. Further complicating the matter is the scandalously underdressed woman who appeared out of nowhere and is now hiding aboard his ship.
Leda finds herself drawn to the enigmatic, Iliad-quoting pirate. On the cusp of achieving his goal, Drake is betrayed, and he and his crew are taken captive. Can Leda recover the Avalon roses before they’re executed? Or is their fate already sealed?

First, prepare to fall in love with the characters. Leda Bellini, a swan-shifter and former detective escapes from her restrictive witness protection program. She’s heard of this place called Moon Mist Manor on an island in Cat’s Paw Cove and decides it would be the perfect place to sort out a new life. Before she’s barely unpacked, she follows Davy, a persistent cat, back 303 years, and right into the arms of an English sea captain.
Darkly handsome Captain Drake Reid has seen many things in his life, but never a half-dressed woman coming out of the sea. He has no idea if she a witch, a siren, or a figment of his imagination. Once he determines she’s a genuine woman, their love kindles. Each realizes they can’t live without each other, but how could either of them fit into the other’s world? What will it take for each one to follow their heart?
But there’s more! If you’ve kept up with Kerry’s Moon Mist Manor series (if not, why not?), you’ve come to love this special place. I won’t spoil it for you, but there’s a dangerous threat to the Manor’s very existence. It takes a wee little fairy to put some sense into Leda’s head. But will the fairy’s warning come too late?
I couldn’t put this book down until I finished the whole enjoyable story. I received an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.
Welcome to the magical world of Cat’s Paw Cove – with magical time travel romance stories and very special cats! Just love this series!!
Leda Belmont (a Swan Shifter) was an undercover detective who was placed in witness protection to save her life. She’s had enough and wants to go out on her own. Her friend and fellow officer in the P.D. had told her about his summer vacations as a child at a magical place called Cat’s Paw Cove. She decides to go there under an assumed name. She has quite a surprise in store for her, seeing just how magical the place is.
Capt. Drake Reid, a Royal Navy Captain, is on a special mission for his King. Imagine his surprise seeing a lady and drenched cat sitting on a rock. He rescues both and knows Davy, the cat, who he thought he lost in a bad storm. He brings them both on the ship. Later, Drake looks for Leda but can’t find her. Imagine his surprise on seeing a white swan! He thinks he has brought a witch on board!! Now the magical adventure begins.
I loved Leda, Drake and Davy the cat, including the secondary characters. So enjoyed the storyline too. What ensues is an adventurous, magical, funny and romantic story. Highly recommend this book as well as the other stories in this series.
Light and fun romance. I laughed out loud in several spots. I love the uniqueness of a swan-shifter. Leda is smart and funny and adapts pretty quickly to living on an 18th-century ship. Drake’s willingness to accept Leda made the story so sweet!
Another sweet story in the Cats Paw Cove world…
This one finds us with a former detective who has gone into hiding, however, she is being pulled to another place…
She heads to Moon Mist Manor where everything she thought she knew is what she never knew at all.
Enter one very handsome and disgraced Navy Captain who has no clue where he is and how he got there. What he does know is he wants Leda and he is going to make it happen but can their love stand the fates of time?
I loved this story…
Fun mixture of time-travel and magic. Leda is a former detective who has been in witness protection for several years. She decided that she wants her life back and slipped away from those guarding her. Her destination is Moon Mist Manor on a island in Cat’s Paw Cove, a place she heard about from her former partner. During a brief stop in the Cove itself, she makes the acquaintance of a very special cat named Davy, who follows her to the Manor. Though she made her reservation under an assumed name, everyone at the Manor seems to know her real name, something that disturbs her. Then, while exploring the island, she finds a compass which whisks her back in time 300 years when she opens it.
Captain Drake Reid is a Royal Navy captain who is on a secret mission for the king. A storm forced him to stop at Cat’s Paw Cove for repairs. He is frustrated at the delay, and also by his sister. Eleanor traveled with him so she could stay with an aunt In Charles Town and look for a husband. Instead, she spends way too much time with the son of the local Indian chief. While trying to track her down yet again, Drake spots a woman sitting on the rocks.
I enjoyed the first meeting between Drake and Leda. He is determined to keep her from being seen by his crew and takes her onboard his ship. Leda isn’t happy about being there at first, especially after she learns WHEN she is. If she’s going to get back to her own time, she thinks she should stay put. But Drake is in a time crunch and insists she goes along. He’ll bring her back when he has what he needs. Drake was amazingly accepting of Leda’s time travel claim, thanks to stories heard from his grandmother. He’s a little warier of her other secret, an ability to shape-shift into a swan, and fears she’d be burned as a witch if anyone else discovers it.
I liked seeing the relationship develop between Drake and Leda. There were sparks from the beginning, and an undeniable fascination with each other. But both were also aware that Leda would likely return to her own time. A fun twist enabled Drake to get a taste of Leda’s world, however, the question remained. Would they find a way to be together in the past or the future, or would fate separate them forever? Both Drake and Leda had some serious soul searching to do to discover what was meant to be. I loved Leda’s conversation with one of the fairies, who gave her some pretty blunt advice. The ending was sweet and romantic.
I also enjoyed the mission that Drake had to complete. He has some secrets himself, one of which adds complications to his plans. Though he and his partner-in-crime thought they had everything covered, an unexpected appearance threw those plans into disarray. There were some very tense moments when the success of the mission and their safety were in doubt. It was fun to see how the mission was saved and the unexpected and important results of it.
This romance had many aspects: magic, danger, time travel, regency, pirates, and more. I enjoyed the characters and their woven stories. This is my first book of the series. The magical element (outside of the time travel) really gave it a different feel. The first few pages had me thinking something entirely different was going on. That’s what I get for grabbing books from good authors without reading the blurb!
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Amazing book by Kerry Evelyn! I had so much fun reading Leda and Drakes story and going into the past! Kerry did a great job with this one!
Book 14 in the series a quick fun book to read. Leda changes into her swan form and goes awol from witness protection and ends up at cat paw cove. She goes back in time and meets her true love ! Plenty of laughs and adventure in this one really enjoyed it
So many fascinating elements! Time travel, magic, history, accents, and of course love! I loved reading about Leda and Drake’s relationship and enjoyed the differences in the centuries and how well they were developed. A fun afternoon read!
The Beachcomber’s Buccaneer by Kerry Evelyn is a delightful timeslip novel. It is the third book in the Moon Mist Manor series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Kerry Evelyn has a light-hearted style that entertains the reader in this new adventure.
There are some amusing character exchanges as the heroine arrives in the early eighteenth century from 2020 and is wearing only a bikini!
Words from the twenty first century create amusing confusion too.
A cat plays an important part in the action. As a crazy cat lady, this is pure delight.
The Beachcomber’s Buccaneer is a charming novel to brighten up any afternoon.
I received a free copy from the author. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
