The electrifying first appearance of Jo Nesbø’s detective, Harry Hole.
Inspector Harry Hole of the Oslo Crime Squad is dispatched to Sydney to observe a murder case. Harry is free to offer assistance, but he has firm instructions to stay out of trouble. The victim is a twenty-three year old Norwegian woman who is a minor celebrity back home. Never one to sit on the sidelines, Harry befriends … befriends one of the lead detectives, and one of the witnesses, as he is drawn deeper into the case. Together, they discover that this is only the latest in a string of unsolved murders, and the pattern points toward a psychopath working his way across the country. As they circle closer and closer to the killer, Harry begins to fear that no one is safe, least of all those investigating the case.

I was so excited to finally get the opportunity to read the first book in the Harry Hole series and I can say that I was not disappointed. Reading The Bat was such an insightful experience that in some ways I’m glad that I read this book after I got to know and love Harry Hole first. I now have a much better understanding of what makes Harry …
Meet Harry Hole, a detective from Norway. His is a drunk and a genius. He is sent to Australia to investigate the murder of a girl from Norway, just to tie up loose ends. Sections where they explain why Harry acts as he does, and bit by bit you learn about him. He is not at all likable, but he gets the job done.
I’m actually listening to it. So far, very interesting. Looking to see how the author constructs this mystery. Norwegians detective in Australia. I’ll rate when I’m done listening. So far, very good.
Like Scandinavian thrillers, and jo Nesbo is one of the best writers of the genre.
Isn’t every Jo Nesbo book fantastic?
I have read some of Jo Nesbo’s books with Harry Hole as the main character. But I decided I wanted to go back and read them in order to know what shaped the man in the stories.
‘The Bat’ is the first book where Harry’s story begins. I simply loved it! I couldn’t put it down.
In ‘The Bat’, Inspector Harry Hole of the Oslo Crime Squad is …
Good but not one of his best
I would recommend any book By. Jo Nebso the best.
Explains the pronunciation of the name Harry Hole.
I love the Harry Hole novels. I started somewhere in the middle of the series, so it was a treat to read the first. Harry is a very interesting, sympathetic character, who – like the rest of us – makes some bad decisions, even while the trajectory of his aspirations are always good. It’s a gritty, sometimes difficult to live with story, but I …
Harry Hole is a wonderful character, lots of depth and emotion packed into this murder intrigue.
Jo Nesbo is one of the best mystery/thriller writers in the world. Love his books
Did not hit my hot spot. Felt it was unrealistic v
Very Scandinavian.
Lots of guesses on the murderer! A little drawn out with the flash back of Harry’s ex, and a whole lot of characters to keep track of! Other than that I really enjoyed this book.
I really like the Harry Hole series. They are surprising.
I’ve read other Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbo, but this first in the series gives a whole new dimension to a Harry. So glad they finally released it to our market!
Rediculous
Not your straightforward Scandinavian mystery. The Bat has twists and rutns, and an unusual setting in Australia.
This is my first Jo Nesbo novel. Love Harry Hole! Can’t wait to read the series…
