“High praise for this gem!”-Reader Review
Baroness Adele von Mueller learns the sweetest love is forbidden….Baroness Adele von MuellerIt’s 1903 and free-spirited 18-year-old Baroness Adele von Mueller has just arrived to live with her spinster aunt in New York City. After a previous impropriety tarnishes her reputation with the German nobility, her father sends her overseas to give her one last … nobility, her father sends her overseas to give her one last chance to marry into money and save the family’s name. Instead, Adele finds herself falling for charming and wickedly handsome Nick Mason, the foreman of a paper factory, who is as gorgeous as he is poor. As family secrets are revealed, Adele learns there’s much more riding on her marrying wealthy than just keeping the family’s name…
Nick Mason
Nick Mason has a habit of falling in love with every girl he sees. An orphan, former newspaper seller and now a foreman at a paper mill, he’s nursing a bruised heart after being dumped by a laundry girl. But when he meets Baroness Adele disguised on a night out as a maid in her family’s house, he knows right away there’s something different about her. Once she reveals her true identity, he’s even more intrigued. Nick has fallen for white women before, but never one so wealthy, and never one he knew he couldn’t live without. With most people firmly against their love, he must visit her in secrecy to make their romance blossom.
Nick and Adele must stand up to a society and a family that won’t accept their love for what it is: true and enduring. Can they withstand the storm, or will they be forced apart by a deck that’s stacked against them in this steamy Victorian romance?
This historical interracial romance/Victorian romance novel marks Anya Silverthorne’s debut.
Readers should be aware that Baroness is the first in a series. As such, it ends on a cliffhanger that is NOT HFN or HEA. But if you stick with the characters in the series, you’ll ultimately get a satisfying HEA!

The Baroness Of New York
By: Anya Silverthorne
REVIEW
The Baroness Of New York is a lovely debut novel from Anya Silverthorne in the historical fiction genre. This story has a particularly unique aspect that I have not previously read. Adele, a young Baroness, has been banished by her father for some kind of scandal, and she is bound from Germany to New York aboard the Oceanic. Adele travels with Sophie, a maid, assigned by the aunt with whom Adele will live once she arrives in New York. Adele hates the confined life she is forced to live because of social mores. Fortunately, Adele and Sophie form a genuine friendship, so one night, in disguise, Adele accompanies Sophie for a night of fun. This decision changes her life. Adele meets Nick, a paper mill foreman, and it’s nearly love at first sight. Besides the difference in class, Nick is a black man, and interracial couples were essentially forbidden at the time. None of this matters, though, because love is love is love, you know? I have never read an interracial historical story, so I was glad to see a new issue from the era brought to light. This story is agonizingly heartbreaking. I’m reading and hoping Adele and Nick will have a happy ever after, but I know that is just not possible or plausible. Society types in the higher classes are ruthless, vicious and self righteous creatures. Just as I feared, Adele is forced to choose between true love or duty to family and name. Either way, Adele loses. It’s a shame that such a free spirit should be either caged or shunned for her choice. Sigh. I won’t spoil the story, so I will just say that it continues in a second book. In December. An eternity from now. Why is this always the way?!
This incredibly, heart wrenching story had me glued to every page. It’s an emotional roller coaster ride as you feel the love and torment Adele and Nick are going through. Then you add the dynamic of Aunt Stella and would be suitor, Theodore, along with the controlling power of grandfather and father, and ride gets even wilder.
I normally don’t read continuing novels, and I probably wouldn’t have this time, had I of known, but now that I’m hooked, I will anxiously await the next……

The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and descriptions, as to give you a full understanding and realism that flows smoothly. Amazing job Anya, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
This is a beautifully written story about two people with completely different backgrounds who fall in love and have to face the scorn of society. I prefer clean reads and this was a bit steamy, but the storyline was very interesting and well crafted. I haven’t read too many Regency/Victorian romances that touch on interracial relationships, and this one was very well written. The love that Nick and Adele share is beautiful. This is an intriguing read with wonderfully developed characters and a storyline that kept me totally engrossed through the very end. Filled with romance and surprising twists, I couldn’t put this book down! I am looking forward to the next one!

Beautifully written love story. Characters are so well written that they draw you into the story. Loved this book. Hard to put down.
Wonderfully written storyline and characters that were so well created that as I turned each and every page I felt like Nick and Adele pulled me right into their journey as it unfolded!
I had tears in my eyes from the last few words in this story. Oh, how I would have liked to see it end differently.
Baroness Adele von Meuler is sent to America to live with her aunt after twice causing a scandal in Germany. She knows she will be married off when a suitable match is found. But before she can be introduced to society by her aunt, she meets Nick, a black man without money or a future.
He is her missing puzzle piece as they call it, but is that enough for a future together? Hearing that a good marriage keeps her aunt from receiving money from her father, Adele’s grandfather, changes a lot but it doesn’t change the love she feels for Nick.
I found the character portrayed by Adele liberating in her views. Even though she is a high class privileged woman, she does not look down on the working people and is even jealous of the freedom they have instead of following all kinds of rules imposed by society. A refreshing view of the world in 1903

Baroness Adele von Mueller and Nick Mason’s story had me turning pages I was not putting the book down until I had finished reading it. It does end on a cliff-hanger. What is going to happen will she choose Nick or Theodore and what is Aunt Stella’s real story? I want to read the next book. What a ride that was! As a fan of both historical fiction and romance, this book had me all in: I fell in love with Adele and Nicks story from the start. The forbidden romance! The drama! The plot twists! I’m here for it. Anya Silverthorne has a way with words that not only paints a very distinct picture, she makes you actually FEEL the emotions of the characters. I devoured this book and I cannot wait for the next book to come out so find out what’s next for Adele, Nick, and even Theodore. What an excellent debut book!

I loved this book and an can not wait for the next book to see how it turns out. The love triangle is great. The characters pop right off the page keeping you engaged in their story. The subject matter of racism, being gay, the lack of respect and autonomy of women, the class separation and lack of closeness in the upper class families brings to light how far we have come and yet to go. The ability of the heroine to love is amazing and I admired her character greatly. The romance she had with Nick is simply extraordinary and with Theo, well it is just beginning.
The storyline runs along smoothly, the narrative and dialogue are great. I found the writing wonderfully done. The author takes us on an emotional rollercoaster as Adele copes Witt the reality of her situation, her lonely childhood and her ability to express herself. She strong, sensitive and caring. This is definitely a book worth reading. It is a sweet and steamy romance but oh so much more.

Hard to put down.
This turn of the century tale was outstanding the plot was interesting and I was fully engaged with the characters. This was a hard to put down book. The Victorian age had so many conflicting ideas and morals and the author did a splendid job of showing this. Nick and Adele’s story is one that I will re-read over and over again high praise for this gem. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
