I had such fun reading this book. I could totally relate with Julia as she reminds me of myself. She was a very quiet shy girl. Didn’t like crowds. Very analytical. Needed to take her time before speaking for fear of saying the wrong words. I did not like Cedric as he was a two-faced scoundrel. He tried to manipulate and seduce Julia which made her very confused and uncomfortable. I loved Lord Falkland as he was very respectful of Julia. Totally the opposite of his brother. I’m glad Julia continued to sort out her feelings toward the two brothers which helped her to realize which one she really felt more comfortable with and enjoyed being with. All the characters in this book were very well written and true to many characters one could very well relate with. I loved the descriptions of the scenes as I could easily see them in my mind and wish I could have lived during this time period. I enjoy Ms Thorne’s style of writing. She leads the reader slowly and steadily toward our much needed HEA only revealing enough clues to keep us glued to the pages to find out what will happen next. I could very easily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys regency romance.
Baron or brother – who’s the cad?
Miss Julia Bellevue is faced with a dilemma. Her father’s will has decreed her betrothed – to Godwin Gruger, Baron Fawkland – a man whom she has not seen since she was twelve and he was seventeen. Not only that, but if she does not marry by the end of the summer, her beloved house in Bath will pass on to her distasteful uncle. Julia is a wallflower. She loves her quiet little house, the town of Bath, and her painting. She does not love parties, routs, crowds, conversations, or gossip – she’s been the subject of that all her life. She’s cool to the Baron when first they meet, but is soon overwhelmed by his brother Cedric’s attentions. Godwin and Cedric are fierce competitors, she’s attracted to both, can marry only one, and each of them warns her against the other. It’s a treat to see the awkward and shy Julia come in to her own as she navigates the obstacle course of self-doubt, falling in love, and scandalizing the Ton on her way to her very own HEA. Lovely period detailing, perfectly restrained sexual tension (this is a drawing room, not a bedroom, romance), clever plotting and some wise insights into the human heart are the best of this story. A tendency toward repetition and a terrible lack of proper punctuation are the only drawbacks. I’m a little surprised that, when compounding this omnibus edition of four novellas, the author didn’t take the opportunity to proofread and edit, but this effort is good enough for 4 stars. Fans of clean Regency romance will enjoy it. My thanks to Candid Book Reviews for the ARC, and this is a voluntary, independent and uncompensated review.
