If there’s one character who inspires me on a personal level, it’s Magnus Bane!
This set of 11 stories were absolutely entertaining. I simply love the way Magnus does not take life (or danger) seriously. Freaking refreshing! I want to hang out with him all the time. He does it all in style while being a sensitive soul with a big heart deep down despite his demon heritage.
I immediately started listening to his full novel (The Red Scrolls of Magic) after finishing The Bane Chronicles.
The only choice I question is whether I should have bought the book instead since the narrator sounds nothing like the voice I was using in my head while reading The Bane Chronicles. All I know is that I need more Magnus!!
Oh, how I have missed this series. Magnus Bane is one of my favorite characters from The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices and these stories did not disappoint. He is just as charismatic as ever and his humor is refreshing. The stories expanded on moments from the other series and explained some moments that were only mentioned. Most of the stories seemed to go in chronological order, but I felt that 1 was misplaced. There are a couple of stories with Alec and one was told before the first battle with Valentine and the members of his Circle. The last story is told in voicemails to Magnus following the incident in City of Lost Souls. I wish I had read this sooner so that I could remember exactly what happened.
I have moved right on to Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and then will start The Dark Artifices series. No more breaks from Cassandra Clare books for me.
The Bane Chronicles follows the ever-charismatic Magnus Bane through the centuries with carefully written short stories highlighting his relationship with Downworlders and Shadowhunters.
Brilliant Addition to TMI World
It was such a fun read. The Bane Chronicles is a collection of eleven short stories that illuminate the life of the marvelous Magnus Bane. The stories were written not only by Cassandra Clare but also by Maureen Johnson and Sarah Rees Brennan, going through the centuries to add humor and history to the Shadowhunter World.
The Bane Chronicles is an excellent addition to the series because it adds history. Magnus Bane is a warlock which means that he is immortal, so he has been alive for quite some time. These stories capture who he is and take readers back as early as the 18th century to highlight some important moments in his life and the world.
The stories have humor, highlighting the lighter side of his personality, the fun side. However, some of the stories also focus on the depth of his psyche, how much he cares and loves. These stories bring to life his lifelong relationship with notable characters in the Shadowhunter world, such as the Herondales, the Lightwoods, Catarina, Camille, Raphael, and Ragnor Fell.
The Bane Chronicles adds so much history to the world that Clare has created in a very cohesive and thoughtful manner. Moreover, none of the authors missed the mark on bringing this brilliant fan-favorite character to life.
The collection also has eleven illustrations highlighting one scene of the following story. They are so well done, giving the stories more life.
Final Thoughts
It is unnecessary to read The Bane Chronicles to understand The Mortal Instruments, The Dark Artifices, or The Infernal Devices. However, reading these eleven short stories gives the universe Clare created and gives the reader and fans a stronger appreciation of the world.
I enjoy reading this book. It help me to understand Magnus better he I must say is one of my favorite characters. I also enjoy how this book explains how other characters that are introduced and become a part of the city of bones and the infernal devices.
I love Magnus Bane, and this was a fun read.
Cassandra Clare is my favorite author. She’s an amazing writer. I read a lot of books and no one else compares to her writing.
At the time of writing this review, Chain of Gold is coming out in a little over a month. A MONTH. Needless to say, I very much cannot keep my chill and have gone into preparation mode reading all the Shadowhunter books I can before March.
And somehow I’ve lived my life thus far without diving into any of the short story books from the shadowhunter universe. For some odd reason, I’ve never been pulled to Magnus’ short stories and it’s hard to pinpoint why. I’m very secure with my adoration for Magnus and he feels like a very developed characters to me, so I’ve just never felt the need to read more about his history???
Obviously, that’s some bullshit the old me pre-Bane Chronicles would say because this book was DELIGHTFUL. And HILARIOUS. It’s no surprise that Magnus is the absolute best and I just love him so much?? But seeing him develop the amazing friendships we’ve already come to love gave me FEELINGS. My view of Camille is forever changed. I’ve also never realized how entangled Magnus and Raphael’s history really was and I have such a better appreciation for them now. And Ragnor!! Oh my god, I will never NOT call him my sweet pea pod now.
I also thought Cassandra Clare did a great job of capturing the feeling of decades passing by. That was something I was vaguely concerned about going in—that capturing the full scope of Magnus’ long life would be impossible, but I really loved it! All the descriptions of each time period were so cool and it gave me a sharper clarity of why Magnus is the way he is. Which is FABULOUS, obviously.
This was also my first glimpse at the characters from The Last Hours and I just—
*Hyperventilates*
HOW CAN I LOVE THEM SO MUCH WITH SO LITTLE TO GO ON?!? I would do anything for Jamie’s happiness. ANYTHING. And I’m DYING to know what the deal is with him and Grace?????? Can I get some ANSWERS PLEASE??????? Also, is there anything better than adult dad Will?? I think not. *Swoons*
~FINAL WORD~
Loretta sat on this book for too long thinking that it wasn’t that important to the Shadowhunter universe. Don’t be Loretta. A CAUTIONARY TALE.
Magnus is my favorite of all of the mortal instruments books!!! I so very much loved a book totally dedicated to him!!! Read it!!! You will love it!!!
These amazing short entries by our favorite mundane author Cassandra Clare gives us more insight into our favorite high wore-lock of Brooklyn Magnus Bane. We wanted more Magnus and Cassie delivered thank you for this wonderful look into his past. I loved these shorts so much.
Magnus has definitly become one of my favorite chracters of the series. Loved this book.
I really enjoyed these chronicles. I especially enjoyed all of the stories involving Alec! The bonus story in my copy of the book was a bit bittersweet, but enjoyable anyway. Though my favorites involved Alec, it was also interesting to get stories of the Magnus that came before all that we’d seen in The Mortal Instruments. And the Magnus that was between The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments. Magnus is such a lively and lovable character and I’m so glad that Clare decided to give us more of him. Definitely recommended for people who love the Shadowhunter world, and especially if you’ve got a soft spot for the warlock Magnus Bane.
