The Bad Place was the first book I read by Author Dean Koontz, and it was the book that hooked me on Dean’s writing. After reading this book, I went on to blow through his entire back list. I read this one over 20 years ago, but it still stands out as one of the most twisted books I have ever read, and I mean twisted.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a suspenseful page turner that’ll knock their socks off.
I don’t usually get so engrossed in a book that I lose track of time. However, “The Bad Place” had me up reading until the wee hours of the morning. As with most of Koontz’s books, there are the elements of good and bad, supernatural and man-made unnatural things. “The Bad Place” took me places I never thought I could go. Frank Pollard is the central character and his problem is that when he goes to sleep he literally is teleported to different places and wakes with no memory of where he has been or what he has done. He hires a pair of PIs to follow and investigate what happens when he sleeps. But, there is only one person who truly knows the answer and he is a young man with Down’s syndrome. He knows about the “Bad Place” a horrible place from which nobody returns. This book literally took me to the moon and back. I visited the black sand beach at Punaluu, Hawaii and various other strange and amazing places. The book encouraged me to actually visit the black sand beach at Punaluu just two week’s before Kilauea erupted and covered the black sand beach, destroying the restaurant where we had eaten lunch. Koontz has a knack for describing scenery that you can actually find yourself in the scene with the characters in his books.
I read many books in high school but the one that sticks out is this one.
Favorite Dean Koontz book!
Watch out as master of terror Dean Koontz invites you to visit The Bad Place! Frank Pollard has been sleeping pretty poorly at night. In fact, he hardly sleeps at all. He is afraid to sleep because he doesn’t know where he goes or what happens to him during his slumber. He only knows that each time he wakes up, he is frightened and disturbed by the discovery of some kind of mud or dirt or soil… or blood… on his hands and feet, arousing fears that something strange and terrible happens to him while he sleeps… or that he is the one who does something terrible, something he can never remember. Fearful of whatever transpires while he is sleeping, Frank hires a husband-and-wife team of private investigators to follow him and find out what happens when he is sleeping. What they discover will lead them all on an exciting, dizzying, and terrifying adventure into the supernatural and into the unknown, even as Frank is hunted relentlessly by a group of menacing enemies with incredible psychic powers beyond comprehension! As for our three protagonists, no one can say where their astonishing journey might end… but a gifted young man with Down’s Syndrome could warn them, and, in fact, already has, that their journey could lead to “the bad place”,a place from which no one ever returns! Master of darkness Dean Koontz once again takes us on suspenseful, frightening journey into the heart of marvelous storytelling, wonderful characters, terror, suspense, imagination, mystery, humor, twists, turns, surprises, warmth, and enchantment! Visiting sites like Bookbub, Amazon, and Thriftbooks, I’ve noticed that customer reviews and user reviews are divided somewhat evenly between those who consider the book a suspense novel and those who consider it a horror story. I’m a huge fan of both genres, so I will end this review in my favorite honest way of reviewing some books, especially by way of recommendation: If you’re a fan of mystery and suspense, particularly some pretty scary stories, you’ll love this book. If you’re a fan of truly strange supernatural horror stories, you’ll love this book. No matter which genre happens to be your favorite, if you’re a fan of Dean Koontz, author of suspense novels and many horror novels as well, or if you have never read him and you are looking for a great new author, you’ll love this book! It’s simply a terrific story that’s sure to please any fan of fictional novels who loves books with fantastic writing and even better storytelling! A 5 star treasure for any reader who is a big fan of all of the above!
I first read this book when I was 16 years old, and I absolutely loved it then. I recently re-read it, and it still holds the same attention it garnered from me back then.
The Bad Place, by Dean Koontz, is one of the eeriest stories you’ll ever read. I loved it.
