“The laughs keep coming” in this mystery novel as a small-town Virginia obituary writer looks into the life—and suspicious death—of her latest subject (Kirkus Reviews). Riley Ellison thought she was making a bold move when she left her job at the Tuttle Corner Library for the exciting world of print journalism. Except it hasn’t been all that exciting so far. As the Tuttle Times’ new obituary … Tuttle Times’ new obituary writer, her career prospects seem deader than ever. But all that changes when Riley’s former co-worker Tabitha finds her soon-to-be father-in-law dead on his office floor. Now Riley has plenty of questions to answer if she wants to give this obit the attention it deserves—especially with Tabitha’s fiancé suspected of the murder.
With mounting pressure from her boss, the mayor, and a bridezilla facing a conjugal-visit honeymoon, Riley is desperate to prove she can handle the increasing demands of her new job. Despite warnings from her new boyfriend Jay, and the distracting return of her long-time ex and his impossibly hot new girlfriend, Riley blurs the line between reporter and investigator. But as she starts to uncover some of Tuttle’s most dangerous secrets, she may wind up with more than a byline on the obit page.

The Bad Break is a great follow-up to the first book in the series, The Good By-Line. In The Bad Break, former small-town librarian Riley Ellison has gone to work for the local paper. But her new job isn’t quite what she hoped. Her duties include researching the “pre-dead” for the obit writer. When an opportunity to write an obit finally comes her way, she mixes investigative reporting with obit research. A funny, entertaining mystery with characters who feel real.
I loved this book…..I read parts of this book to my husband and we laughed and laughed. Then the book takes takes a serious plot. What a writer. I’ve got to get the next one.
Love this series
Again I loved how Jill lead me through relationships and intrigue. I was not able to predict the outcome which is what I like about how she builds up the story but doesn’t give too much away. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more of her work.
Another absolutely fantastic and hilarious installment of the Riley Ellison series. Jill Orr writes with such humor, it’s impossible not to fall in love with her characters!
I enjoy the characters and the relationships they have.
Good cozy. Characters are interesting.
Take some time for yourself and enjoy this book! Lots of humor, twists and turns and MYSTERY! The newspaper world lights up with characters and story. Questions of “Who?”, “What?”, “Where?”, “When?”, and “Why?” Get answers. Thoroughly enjoyed!
Kept my interest – I enjoyed the storyline of this book as well as the main character. I did not figure out ‘who dun it’ until the book revealed the culprit which kept me reading. I did not enjoy the emails to Bestmillenniallife.com and Click.com that were occasionally interspersed – they distracted from the story in my opinion. I chose to read this book because many reviewers mentioned the humor in Jill Orr’s writing – I missed it. I love the humor in Evanovich’s books…but found nothing close in this book.
Enjoyable read.
Riley Ellison keeps you laughing and turning pages in order to figure out who is killing people in Tuttle Corner. She gets herself in some dangerous situations trying to write the obituary of the deceased. I really enjoyed this book.
Good read
Fun read, with good story line.
I like a book with some romance and a little mystery. I don’t like scary thrillers. This was fun and yet held my interest and I wanted to keep reading.
I found this book good and fun to read. The characters were believable. The story line was interesting. It was a mystery that I would recommend.
A good who-dunnit with interesting twists and turns. It kept me very engaged. Good characters and story.
Wow, great mystery. I loved the characters and the story. Couldn’t put it down until I finished.
A little hard to get into the book however once I got further into the story, it was hard to put it down. Good mystery
The characters did not keep my interest.
Strangely the title and cover don’t give a hint into this book that was a fast and fun read. There’s more depth here than the title suggests.. worth your time..if you’re a cozy mystery fan…
