Major Joshua Wolfe, a former Royal Marine, works as a gamekeeper for his cousin, the Duke of Armitage. He rescues Lady Gwyn from a physical altercation with a prior suitor. Joshua reluctantly agrees to become the lady’s bodyguard during her time in London. However, he suspects the Drake siblings are hiding viable information that could hinder his job. Will Joshua’s old battle wound handicap his ability to protect Gwyn?
Lady Gwyn Drake is the twin sister of the Duke of Thornstock. Her past rears its ugly head and threatens her upcoming debut into society. She intends to handle it discreetly without her family learning about it. Gwyn’s new bodyguard, however, makes that difficult. The handsome major proves to be different from her prior fortune-hunting suitors. Can Gwyn trust Joshua with her secrets? Or will they destroy any possibility of a future together?
I am ecstatic that Joshua got a full-length novel. He definitely deserves a happily-ever-after. Joshua is a proud man, who is still learning to cope and deal with the injury that handicapped him. I love how Joshua credits Beatrice with his recovery. Although he never vocalized it, he appreciates everything his younger sister did for him. What I like the most about Joshua is how much in common he has with Gwyn. The two have such cynical outlooks about love. The only difference is that Gwyn’s cynicism is from past experience while Joshua’s skepticism is second hand.
Gwyn won me over since page one. I adore how she sees Joshua’s true potential. Unlike her peers, Gwyn never once judged him by his disability but by the man hidden within. I admire her persistence. Gwyn understands Joshua’s surliness is a defense mechanism; however, she refuses to allow his demeanor to stand between them. What I love the most about Gwyn is her defensiveness about Joshua’s limitations. She is quick to anger on his behalf whenever someone intentionally or unwittingly slights him over his handicap.
THE BACHELOR is book two in Sabrina Jeffries’ historical romance series, DUKE DYNASTY. I have been eagerly anticipating this novel, and it did not disappoint. Occasionally, I felt as if I missed out with Lord Heywood and Cassandra since I have not read the short story in the anthology, SEDUCTION ON A SNOWY NIGHT. Regardless, it did not hamper my ability to follow the storyline.
THE BACHELOR is a wonderful tale of two cynical hearts healing enough to find love. I simply did not want this book to end. I cannot wait to find out who will threaten the Duke of Thornstock’s bachelor ways.

The Major and the Lady.
Gwen is keeping secrets, secrets that can bring a lot of pain. The only one she can trust is Joshua. When a blackmailer/kidnapper shows up from the past, it’s Joshua’s s job to protect the lady he loves.
Humorous banter, wicked walking sticks, blackmail, shooting guns and never a dull moment for a man determined to do his job and protect the woman he loves.
I got to read the first chapter and it left me wanting more! The first book in this series was good but this one is going to be more intriguing I think. In it we see Lady Gwyn again and throwing her together with Joshua again! I can’t wait to see where the rest of the book takes us with this couple!
A fantastic historical romance by one of my go to authors! Gwyn is spent quite a bit of time hiding a past affair from her family since it would ruin their reputation. This just gets worse when the man in question shows up trying to blackmail her to keep him quite. Worried for her safety after witnessing an encounter (though he has no clue what it was really about) her brother hires the gamekeeper to act as her bodyguard during her debut. This makes things hard for her to meet in secret with her past lover since he is always there. Thrown in close proximity to one another they slowly develop feelings for each other though both try to deny it. This makes for quite a few tension filled moments as well as some other things. Overall a great historical romance that makes you feel like you are living during that time while following two characters you really get attached to. A must read for fans of the genre. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Lydia Fletcher has been married three times, each time to a duke and each time giving birth to the heir to the dukedom. Her family is a mix of siblings, half siblings, cousins, and extended family members who are not even related to each other. This story involves two of those unrelated family members. Both Gwyn and Joshua have kept secrets from their family and each other. Joshua comes to Gwyn’s rescue from one of her secrets, the villainous Captain Lionel Malet. However, she doesn’t tell him or her brother the whole true about the encounter, which leads to Joshua being hired as her bodyguard during her season in London. In the beginning Gwyn and Joshua are like oil and water. As they spend more time together, an attraction develops, unraveling some of their secrets. To say more would ruin the twists Ms. Jeffries has put into the mix. This tale is a page turner, leaving the reader anxious to see what happens next to these two great characters. One of the things I love about series is the chance to catch up on characters from other books. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Gwyn’s twin brother’s story. I received this eBook from NetGalley for an honest review.
She’s got a problem and he’s the only one who can fix it, but will he?
I’m a sucker for Sabrina Jeffries books. Why? The writing is always great and I get sucked right into the story. This book was no different. I had to know what would happen to the characters. Had to.
Gwyn and Joshua are great characters. They’re both strong and confident. They have great chemistry. I have to admit there were times I got irritated with Joshua for being so bullheaded, but it made me think about him after the book ended and I love that in a story. I got emotionally involved. Then there’s Gwyn. She could be a spitfire, but she could also be a bit too pushy. I don’t know. There was something about her that grated on my nerves, but it was okay because she grew through the story. I rooted for these people to get their happy ending.
If you’re interested in a good read to fill an afternoon, with solid characters sure to stick with you after the last page, then this is the story for you. Recommended.
Lady Gwyn Drake has a history with Lionel Malet that goes back much further than their recent encounter when he tried to abduct a heiress. He is blackmailing her and if she doesn’t pay, he says he will tell the press about the affair they had ten years ago and ruin her. Gwyn never told anyone about the one night she spent in his bed or the consequences and will do anything to keep her secrets. Thinking she can intimidate him, she pulls a gun, but is quickly disarmed and would have been in trouble if she wasn’t saved from him by Major Joshua Wolfe. A man she has long been attracted to and who clearly doesn’t feel the same, or so she thinks.
Joshua is the current Duke of Armitage’s cousin and acting estate gamekeeper. Joshua was gravely wounded in battle years ago and is desperate to return to active duty. His letters to the War Office have been ignored, so when Gwyn’s brother the Duke of Thornstock asks him to act as her bodyguard in London, he agrees and hopes that he can finally get some answers from the War Office and keep his attraction to Gwyn a secret. He feels unworthy of her, even though he is the grandson of a duke and a war hero.
He is not sure what is going on with Gwyn and Malet, but he thinks there is more than what Thorn and Gwyn have told him and when there is an attempt to sabotage their coach, he is sure of it. He is determined to get answers and keep Gwyn at arm’s length – but she won’t make it easy!
I thought this was a great addition to the series. Gwyn and Joshua are both a little broken and both have trust issues, they are clearly perfect for each other, but neither is going to make the journey to HEA a smooth ride! The book has some amusing dialogue, a lot of secrets, a bit of intrigue, some steamyish love scenes, a great supporting cast of characters, a nasty villain and finally HEA. I did feel like the book dragged a bit towards the end and I was disappointed that Gwyn never actually says “I love you” to Joshua – it is implied, but for me – it’s not the same. This is the second book in the series, but there is also a linked novella in the anthology Seduction on a Snowy Night that is Heywood and Cass’s story and the events in that book are closely linked to this story – so while this book is easily read as a standalone, I would recommend reading the novella “A Perfect Match” if you want a bit more backstory. Overall, I am happy to recommend this book and I look forward to the next installment.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher.*
Oh! I LOVED this book. I loved Joshua and Gwyn in the first book and couldn’t wait to see their story. We learned of Joshua’s war injuries and how he’s still suffering and trying to come to grips with his limitations – and we also learned that there is more to Gwyn that one would believe. She has some deep secrets. Now, we get to learn what those secrets are in this wonderfully well-written, romantic, and well-plotted book.
In case you missed the first book, Project Duchess, – well – you shouldn’t miss the first book because it was wonderful – but if you did… This series is about a Duchess who was married three times – each time to a duke – and she has five children from those – meaning that three of her sons are dukes. While each of her children, Fletcher (Grey), twins – Marlowe (Thorn) and Gwyn, Sheridan, and Heywood, will get their own story, there is an overarching mystery regarding the entire family. At this point, it appears that the mystery concerns the mother, but that could easily change through the course of the series.
Joshua is the grandson of a duke, but his profligate father died leaving Joshua and his sister destitute. His grandfather paid for Joshua to have a commission in the Royal Marines – at the age of sixteen – which doesn’t speak too well of the grandfather (to me). Joshua loved the military and was very good at it – until he was horribly injured in a sea battle. Now, he works as a gamekeeper on the estate that had belonged to his grandfather. He’s grouchy, irascible, unhappy with his role in life, and inordinately attracted to Gwyn.
Lady Gwyn Drake, twin sister to Thorn, the Duke of Thornstock, has secrets – secrets that could impact her entire family. Those secrets are back to haunt her — she’s being blackmailed. She can’t tell Thorn about it because he’d just go out and kill the man, so she just has to find the money to pay. At thirty, she had hoped the past was behind her, but she’d always worried about it – and now it is here.
When Joshua witnesses what he thinks is an attempt to kidnap Gwyn, he immediately rescues her, but the kidnapper gets away. What he actually witnessed was a meeting between Gwyn and her blackmailer. When Joshua tells Thorn about the ‘attempted kidnapping’, Thorn immediately hires Joshua to be Gwyn’s bodyguard during her upcoming debut season. Great, now how is she going to escape to pay her blackmailer?
Gwyn is attracted to Joshua and Joshua is attracted to Gwyn, so can you imagine what being thrown together constantly in London is going to do to them? Yep! You are absolutely right and it is a fun ride. Two troubled people, each with trust issues, fall for each other, but their path is neither clear nor smooth. I loved watching them work their way toward their HEA – not exactly fighting the attraction, but reluctantly accepting it – and then – well, you’ll just have to read the book.
I highly recommend this book. It is a great read with great characters you’ll quickly come to love. Now, I can hardly wait for the next book, Who Wants to Marry a Duke, which features Gwyn’s brother Thorn and Miss Olivia Norley who is a chemist. How cool is that?

When Lady Gwyn is blackmailed by Captain Malet, a previous suitor, she intends to pay him off and have done with him. Unfortunately she does not have the funds immediately available and must ask for time. Time that Malet refuses to give.
Major Wolfe, seeing Gwyn meeting with Captain Malet sets off his alarms. He knows something’s afoot. Separating them, then bringing her meeting with Malet to the attention of her brother, he plans to have done with her but instead gets roped into being her chaperone. Definitely not what he wants to do but is in agreement as he intends to meet with the War Office to see if he can be re-instated.
But, the best plans go awry. Major Wolfe is denied reinstatement and instead is set out as a spy to collect information on Malet. His attraction to Gwyn also becomes stronger than ever. He knows he is not good enough for her but it does not stop him from wanting to be with her any less.
Captain Malet is not all he seems and Major Wolfe is set to find out who he is and what he truly wants.
Can Captain Wolfe and Lady Gwyn find love and a happily ever after amidst danger and lies?
From the very first chapters I was caught, hook, line and sinker. I couldn’t wait for more. The Bachelor is entertaining, passionate and sweet and has a little mystery and suspense peppered in.
Gwyn is smart, sassy and brave. She is a little more brazen then the times call for but is a wonderful and caring heroine none the less.
In the beginning, Joshua came off a little humbled and rigid. As the story progressed however, his passionate and caring nature shone through. What he feels he lacks due to his lameness is made up ten-fold with his passionate nature.
Joshua and Gwyn as a couple are on fire! Even when simply kissing. I could feel their kisses right down to my toes.
Lady Hornsby is outspoken and more than brazen. She brought color to this read while the family dynamics brought intimacy and caring.
I didn’t know where this story was headed when I started but it ended up being a great read. The characters are ones that you cannot help but feel for and love.
I received an ARC via NetGalley of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Five amazing wounded and healed stars!!! With a gruff, grumpy hero, a feisty heroine, drama and danger…this book had it all!
When Gwyn’s past rises up to threaten her, Joshua steps in to help out. He soon finds himself in her brother’s employ as her bodyguard, a position Gwyn is not happy about for a few reasons. But the more time they spend together, the more they realize that their preconceived notions about the other was not completely accurate. They each have a past filled with pain and uncertainty that has left it’s mark on their hearts and souls.
’Like the torn ligatures and muscles in Joshua’s leg that still ached after five years, her wound was hidden…’
Oh man, I absolutely adored Gwyn! She said what she thought without a moment’s hesitation but was still sweet and caring. Once riled up, she really let it fly, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the way she stood up to Joshua.
Joshua was exactly how I like my heroes. He rarely smiled, was often curt, and just wanted to be alone. Gwyn, however, was able to reach deep inside of him and watching him slowly rise up from the ashes of his previous pain and suffering was wonderful. His main priority was protecting her, even when she was determined to waylay him at times. She certainly kept him on his toes.
’She was holding his hand. She was complaining about her suitors. He liked both things better than he should, especially after an evening of being forced to watch her dance with every fool in creation. Of fighting to keep his jealousy under control when all he wanted was to punch her partners in the face.’
I loved watching this couple together! Their banter was quick and smart, their chemistry creating a tension that is felt throughout the book. And when they finally yielded, holy heck! I’m surprised my kindle didn’t go up in flames.
This plot has several layers to it and I was completely engrossed as each one was revealed. With just enough drama and danger, interspersed with the romance, I found myself turning the pages as quickly as possible. The angst is what I would consider mild as both Joshua and Gwyn have a lot of fears, distrust, and uncertainties to deal with but without consuming the story. While they totally clicked together, theirs is not an easy happy ever to obtain. Watching them get there was pure perfection.
Ever since she and her family moved back to England from Prussia, Lady Gwyn Drake has been hiding the folly of a youthful affair in order to protect her family. When the same former suitor comes to her family’s country home to blackmail Gwyn by threatening to reveal her secret, his manhandling is quickly put to an end by the estate gamekeeper, Major Joshua Wolfe. It is clear to Gwyn’s twin brother, the Duke of Thornstock, that she needs protection during her upcoming London season, so he hires the Major to act as her bodyguard. War hero Joshua feels he must accept the request given that Thorn and Gwyn’s mother is his aunt by marriage and he hopes to use the trip to London to facilitate a meeting with the War Secretary so he can petition to return to full duty in the Royal Marines. He takes his job protecting Gwyn seriously, but ignoring his ever growing attraction to her becomes increasingly difficult in such close proximity. Though he knows he’s beneath Gwyn socially, despite being the grandson of a duke himself, Joshua can’t stop his mind wondering what a future with her might be like.
Gwyn is used to being sought only for her money and would prefer to avoid suitors both old and new, as all have been fortune hunters thus far, but with danger closing in on her, and her feelings for Joshua growing, a reckoning between them fast becomes inevitable.
I really loved this book. It was a fast read, but I couldn’t put it down; it really held my attention and I was rooting for Joshua and Gwyn the whole way. Joshua is used to rejections and snide remarks because of his ruined leg and his experiences have only enhanced the natural gruffness of his personality. Both Gwyn and Joshua were afraid of being hurt and rejected by the other, each believing themselves unworthy of the other. Joshua was genuinely sweet and adorable beneath his grumpy exterior and I loved him and Gwyn as a couple. At first I thought Gwyn’s attitude and poor decision making would ruin it for me, but I came to understand and like her and she also grew quite a bit. The villain was a nice addition to the story, as well as the ongoing mystery subplot flowing through this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can’t wait for Thorn’s story.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Bachelor is a fabulous historical romance by Sabrina Jeffries. Ms. Jeffries has provided readers with a well-written book populated with an entertaining, lovable cast of characters. Gwyn is being blackmailed by a former beau that threatens to spread her secrets. Joshua is a wounded Major, hoping to get back to service, meanwhile working for Gwyn’s brother and now as her bodyguard. Gwyn and Joshua’s story is packed with drama, humor, sexy bits, action and suspense. I enjoyed every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Sabrina Jeffries. The Bachelor is book 2 of the Duke Dynasty Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Having read the first book in the Duke Dynasty series, I was looking forward to reading the second book and the author did not disappoint! I really enjoyed Gwyn and Joshua’s story and of course, it’s always fun to see characters from the previous book again:)
I loved Gwyn’s character, even though her secret causes her great angst, she’s so spunky and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself. I also loved Joshua’s character, a wounded soldier that is gruff and a loner but has such a good heart and I so enjoyed the banter between the two of them. Passions soon flare and although he doesn’t deem himself good enough for her, he can’t resist her and it’s up to her to make him realize he IS worthy. Being her bodyguard, they get in some dangerous situations and her being blackmailed is not helping the situation any!!
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This is the second book in the new Duke Dynasty Series. We meet Grey, the Duke of Greycourt half brother to Lady Gwyn Drake and her twin the Duke of Thornstock in book one. His new wife, Beatrice is sister to Major Joshua Wolf who is the gameskeeper for their cousin Sheridan, who is the Duke of Armitage. Now if all that is now confusing enough, Gwyn and Thom mother is also Beatrice and Joshua’s Aunt by marriage.
Gwyn has a secret that she has been keeping for ten years from everyone. When a young Lady she was taken advantage of by one Captain Lionel Malet. He is a nasty, thief and tried to abduct a heiress from
the Christmastide party last year. Joshua helped with getting rid of him. Now he comes across Gwyn and Lionel on a bridge also on the Armitage estate. He keeps Lionel from hurting her and lets her brother know.
Gwyn is upset with Thom knowing as they are all going to London for the Season. Gwyn had a affair with Lionel when she was just twenty and he is blackmailing her to keep quiet. When Thom learn Lionel is back he enlist Joshua as her bodyguard to follow her everywhere and keep her safe. Gwyn is besides her self for a couple of reasons. If he is with her all the time she will not be able to meet Lionel and give him the money to keep him quiet. But the most upsetting problem for her is that she will be spending a lot of time with one Major Wolf who she has a crush on. Even being in the same room with him makes her blush and get tongue tired.
Unknown to her, Joshua is having problems being around her too, he keeps dreaming of doing things with her that he know he could never do as he feels he is not good enough for her.
Joshua see’s himself as not only the poor relation but also a lame soldier who now works for his cousin.
He is also hiding facts behind gruff way around people. When he is in crowds any loud sudden noise puts him right back at the war. He reacts with temper first before knowing where he is .
He was badly wounded in the war and only saved by his sister’s care. A clear case of PTSD but they didn’t know what that was back then.
As Joshua and Gwyn go around London and try to find what Lionel is up to. They can not stop the attraction
from growing between them. As they find more ways to be alone. Falling for each other is a sure thing.
As danger closes in, will Lionel win, can Joshua and Gwyn over come all the problems between them to find a happy ever after ???
There is a great depth of feelings in this story. Both sides have a lot to over come.
Lots of twist and turns and a fast read. Hope you get a copy and settle in as you will not want to put it down.
I can’t wait for the next book. I received and ARC from the author and would like to thank her. It was great.
I am giving my honest opinion voluntarily.
Thank you Ms Jeffries for including the “family tree” for the three ducal families in the front of the book; it helped me keep the siblings/titles straight.
I liked Joshua in Project Duchess and enjoyed reading his story. Gwyn is already 30. She’s a pragmatic young lady, but I felt at times she acted a bit immaturely.
The thoughts of the characters and dialog were well-balanced.
I received an advance copy in a give-away; the thoughts expressed are my own.
This was a sneak peek at the first chapter of The Bachelor by Sabrina Jeffries. This is book 2 in the Duke Dynasty series. I have to say I am already hooked and ready to read this book. Jeffries is an amazing writer. She blends her characters so well into Regency London. I am looking forward to reading the entire book.
Lady Gwen Drake awaits a visitor on a lone bridge late one night. It is Lionel Malet the viscount son who is threatening to blackmail her about their past relationship. What Lionel Malet doesn’t know is that Lady Gwen is armed. She will do anything and everything to keep her past a secret and not let it be public. Enter Major Wolfe who interrupts the confrontation. It is on his property where Lady Gwen and Lionel Malet are having this secret rendezvous and he wants answers. Major Wolfe is a Duke’s grandson. Lady Gwen and Major Wolfe have known each other for a long time. Lady Gwen is love with Major Wolfe and tells him, however, Major Wolfe is indifferent to her. He ignores all her flirtation. Lady Gwen tells Major Wolfe what she can however, Major Wolfe doesn’t believe her and threatens to talk to her brother. I was provided with only the first chapter of this novel by the publishers and hope to read and review it when it is released in the winter of 2020. I absolutely enjoyed the story and the characters. The writing was descriptive and well-written. It immediately brought me into the story. I wanted to learn more about the relationship between lady Gwen and Major Wolfe. Thank you Netgalley for providing me with this complimentary excerpt in exchange for my honest review.
The Bachelor is the second in the Duke Dynasty series but can be read as a stand alone. This is a story of overcoming the past and finding happiness in the present. Gwyn is thirty years old and finally having her debut to society but she holds a secret that will keep her from marrying. Major Joshua Wolfe is on half-pay from the Marines because he was severely injured during a battle. Gwyn’s twin brother Thorn has hired Joshua to protect Gwyn from a former suitor who is trying to kidnap her. As they spend time together traveling to London and while in London, they start to develop feelings for each other but the secrets they keep and their own fears are threatening to destroy their budding relationship. This is a story filled with intrigue, blackmail, espionage and a fantastic love story. The characters are engaging and entertaining. This was a fun, enjoyable read.
I started reading The Bachelor by Sabrina Jeffries almost immediately after “The End” of Project Duchess. I wanted to delve further into this family and the mystery of all the deaths haunting them. I just couldn’t wait to see how the mystery was going to advance.
The Bachelor follows Joshua, who is the brother of Beatrice, the lead of Project Duchess, and Gwyn, the half-sister of Grey, Beatrice’s husband. Yeah, this family’s entanglements are interesting, to say the least. The family tree provided at the front of the book does help keep all the pairings a little clearer, but it is definitely tangled.
Joshua and Gwyn are an interesting pairing. They flirted a little during the previous book, but Joshua was so gruff, I wasn’t sure how it was going to work. Something about Gwyn ruffles his feathers while also soothing him. Joshua was wounded in the war and is rather at wit’s end regarding how to be useful since he can’t be in the Marines anymore. Enter Gwyn, who needs protection, and her brother hires Joshua to be her bodyguard… and, of course, sparks fly.
I really enjoyed the interactions between Joshua and Gwyn, as well as their character and romantic development. All this was done while the overarching mystery of this series was advanced. There were moments when I realized that it might have been a little helpful to have read the novella that is part of Seduction on a Snowy Night as there were incidents that happened during that novella that were mentioned and even continued upon in The Bachelor. The book can stand on its own, but for full effect, I totally suggest reading the series in order, including the novella.
If you enjoy historical romance with a touch of mystery, then you might enjoy this series. You’ll just need to invest in the whole series for that overarching plot since it’s not solved yet in The Bachelor. I’ve been sucked into this series and can’t wait to start reading Who Wants to Marry a Duke to see how this all progresses.

I’m starting by saying I really like meeting Joshua in the previous book of this series, so I was very happy to see that he was the hero of this new book.
Joshua is hired as the “bodyguard” of Lady Gwyn Drake. But Gwyn has her own secrets that make it very hard for Joshua to protect her. I really enjoyed as Joshua wanted to protect her but didn’t invalidate her experiences, and believed her but not judged her.
They have a bit of a rough time in the beginning, but their attraction grows, and when they open up to each other everything falls into place.
Joshua clearly has PTS from the war, and his temper is not the best. Gwyn wants things done her way, and they collide until they start seeing the others’ perspective. When they both learn to trust, all the romance and sexy times get better.
It was a great romance, with characters that made you care about their outcome.
