A candid and insightful look at an era and a life through the eyes of one of the most remarkable Americans of the twentieth century, First Lady and humanitarian Eleanor Roosevelt. The daughter of one of New York’s most influential families, niece of Theodore Roosevelt, and wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt witnessed some of the most remarkable decades in modern … remarkable decades in modern history, as America transitioned from the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, and the Depression to World War II and the Cold War.
A champion of the downtrodden, Eleanor drew on her experience and used her role as First Lady to help those in need. Intimately involved in her husband’s political life, from the governorship of New York to the White House, Eleanor would eventually become a powerful force of her own, heading women’s organizations and youth movements, and battling for consumer rights, civil rights, and improved housing. In the years after FDR’s death, this inspiring, controversial, and outspoken leader would become a U.N. Delegate, chairman of the Commission on Human Rights, a newspaper columnist, Democratic party activist, world-traveler, and diplomat devoted to the ideas of liberty and human rights.
This single volume biography brings her into focus through her own words, illuminating the vanished world she grew up, her life with her political husband, and the post-war years when she worked to broaden cooperation and understanding at home and abroad.
The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt includes 16 pages of black-and-white photos.

Eleanor Roosevelt is considered one of the greatest and most admired women of the 20th century. Motherless at a young age, plain, shy, she rose to be one of the most important figures in 1930s to 1960s US and international politics. I did a lot of research on her and her cousin, Alice Roosevelt, who is featured Murder Under A Black Moon. Mrs. …
Eleanor Roosevelt was both a woman ahead of her time, and a woman of her time. She was married to a remarkable man, and still she tried to make a mark on the world on her own. She may not have always touched on the subjects about which today’s readers may be most curious, like her marriage, but there is enough going on to interest anyone who …
Eleanor Roosevelt presented a hard-core, no-holds-barred story of her life. Yet the book is
amazing in the issues she chooses not to discuss, such as hers and her husband’s indiscretions. Rather, she tells in depth of her early feelings of not belonging , alienation from people her own age. She grew up with enough money to be widely travelled …
Eleanore is always an inspiration.
The Autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt
I wanted to give it more than three stars but I just couldn’t. In her autobiography Roosevelt “condenses” three earlier autobiographies. Honestly, if those are condensed, the originals must have been weighty tomes! While the subject matter is fascinating (she’s one of my favorite people), the writing …
Boring! I was so looking forward to reading this book but after I read 50% of the book I knew I’d never make it to the end. Nothing that gave insights into the Roosevelt’s lives..
I have read a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt. This gave her own view and was a very interesting read.
This book is over 500 pages and is one of those that is a page turner and also has pages of boring facts. Some sections are about people I don’t know and her comments are good but can be a little boring. But when you read where she went, what she did, and what she contributed, it is mind-boggling. Her early years had to be very difficult for …
Eleanor Roosevelt is a brilliant woman whose ideas are well worth considering. She is also an excellent writer.
Extremely interesting
I found this book to be interesting and educational. Gives one an understanding of how the UN works and how US politics work.
I loved finding out about the life of Eleanor Roosevelt and in turn FDR. The book is interesting from start to finish and has personal musings that add to historical events with inside views. I would highly recommend.
I loved this honest and insightful accounting of an extraordinary woman’s life, in fact I couldn’t put it down, and ultimately was sorry to reach the last page. THe writing is both intelligent and accessible and while offering details that bring the author, and the culure and events of her times to life, it reads more like a delightful novel.
She really was an amazing woman and certainly an asset to FDR in so many ways. She overcame many difficulties in both her childhood and in her marriage yet always moved forward with courage and perseverance. I don’t think she ever realized what a positive impact she had on the many lives she touched during her life.
Well written.
It was very interesting and factual
She was a wonderful person and I learned more about her incredible humanity.
Not enough personal info
While a great view into her generation’s perspective, it is also an historical document. She has a great perspective and a very warm heart.
Fascinating
