You know those stories where the smart girl tutors the dumb jock? This isn’t it.Blair: What’s the probability of insulting the one guy on campus I need to help me pass statistics? If I knew, I wouldn’t be standing in front of Wes Reynolds begging him to tutor me.Basketball player, sexy, arrogant, always sleeping through class… these are the things I knew about him. What I didn’t know is that … about him. What I didn’t know is that he is a seriously smart jock.
Wes:
What’s the best way to get rid of the peppy and unrelenting girl that keeps asking me to tutor her? If I knew, I wouldn’t be staring at her tan legs and attempting to teach her statistics.
Sorority girl, fine as f**k, determined, ball buster… these are the things I knew about her. What I didn’t know is that she is all the things I didn’t realize I wanted or needed.
Or that one semester with her would change everything.

WOW– sometimes I get nervous with the athletic jock books because so often they are the manwhores- (JOEL) and I honestly just get SICK of reading about manwhores—I think its SEXY when a guy has standards!!! Okay, enough about that this book was AWESOME. Wes is NOT a manwhore and is actually celibate for a long time before he meets Blair—I thought this was a super sweet and great read!! I read it in one day because I just didnt want to put it down!!!
audio review
I have loved every single word of this book and this wonderful audio. Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke just blew me away with their professional, heart-warming, well paced and humorous rendition of this lovely romance. I now want to listen to the rest of this series!
Blair has a goal and she is well on her way to getting there. Her only problem – statistics. She just can’t grasp it and she needs an A in the class to get into the MBA program she wants. She notices that the one person who is acing the class sleeps through it and is also one of the top basketball players, Wes Reynolds. She is convinced that he has an amazing tutor or has the homework/notes/tests to review from last semester. After sticking her foot in her mouth and insulting Wes over and over again he finally agrees to help her try and comprehend statistics. Of course when they start spending more time together they can’t deny their attraction to each other. Neither one has the time or desire for a relationship so they pretend that they will keep it casual. We all know what happens next.
I am not sure what I was expecting with my first book by this author but I was blown away. I absolutely loved this book. Both Wes and Blair were guilty of judging a book by its cover but once they got to know each other they realized that they were both completely wrong and actually really liked each other inside and out. These two were so much fun – I loved their interactions and watching their feelings develop even if they were both hiding it from the other. When everything went sideways I felt so bad for Wes. I just wanted to hug him so bad but at the same punch him in the basketballs. He was such an idiot but I absolutely understood what he was feeling – still a dang idiot though. And I loved how Blair broke down but didn’t break and how she stood her ground but at the same time helped Wes overcome his issues. Even if he didn’t deserve her help. But that is Blair – heart of gold and wants to help everyone achieve their goals and succeed in life. Loved this book immensely and highly recommend it. I will for sure be devouring more of this author’s books. Bless out.
I loved this! I wasn’t expecting it to be such a feel good book and what we get is that and more. These characters are flawed in the best way. We really get to see them open up. Wes and Blair were the perfect match and watching them fall was so entertaining.
Highly recommended.
I have a thing for sports romances and I was intrigued by this one. The hot jock is the tutor….sign me up! I’m so glad that I gave this book a chance because I loved it.
Blair is a hardworking, sorority girl who seems to have it all together, but she is failing statistics. Wes is the “dumb jock” who ends up tutoring her. The interactions between these two were hilarious. She annoys him, but yet they end up spending all of their time together. Blair and Wes are funny and hot! I LOVED them.
This was a fun read that was relatively low on angst. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I loved every word of this book! I love the banter between the jocks and Blair. I love the whole college romance stories. This book has everything the quick banter, love, friendship and plot! I wish the love seems were a little bit more thorough but otherwise I wouldn’t change one word of this whole book! I’ve never read anything by this author but I’m definitely onto the next book.
My first listen by this author and now I’m hooked on this series. I loved the banter between Wes and Blair. Their slow burn/friendship to lovers storyline grabs you from the beginning and holds you until the end. I really enjoyed Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke’s narration. Can’t wait to listen to book 2 in this series.
The semester has just begun and already, Blair is struggling in her statistics class. To add insult to injury, Wes -captain of the basketball team- has been sleeping in class but got an A on a test she almost failed! She asks Wes about the team’s math tutor, only to find out that they don’t have one. As it turns out, Wes isn’t the stereotypical dumb jock—he’s really good at math! She gets him to become her tutor and eventually the girl he was trying to get rid of becomes the one person he doesn’t want to live without…
I love this twist on the athlete-tutor romance! Blair and Wes were attracted to each other from the beginning but they got to know each other first before their relationship evolved. They balance each other out, with Wes being a grump and Blair being cheerfully optimistic. Their banter (not just between themselves but with the other characters as well) was a joy to listen to.
Narrators Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke did an amazing job. They both have excellent comedic timing and did male and female voices really well.
The Assist is the first book of Rebecca Jenshak’s that I’ve listened to and it won’t be the last!
The Assist is a new adult contemporary sports romance written in dual first-person POV and performed in dual narration. It’s a low-angst standalone that ends with a HEA. No cliffhanger, no cheating.
I received this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.
The Assist is a great sports romance! I loved this story, and the characters were well-developed. My only request was I wish there would’ve been more of a violent revenge on the ex, but overall it was a great read. Plenty of laughter and romance, leaving the reader looking forward to more in the series!
Sports second chance love story of two college students. He is the smart jock, and she needs tutoring on their Statistics class. Blair has that positive personality that could grate on some but it had the right effect on Wes. It was a little drawn out but I enjoyed their tale. It was a lesson both needed to learn, that you need to trust in your partner to be there when times are down.
I want my own smart jock now! I think I am addicted to this series because I absolutely loved all the characters. They seemed so real with how they handled things and experiences. I loved how they were friends first. Really felt their relationship grow. The narrators were great! Really loved how well their voices went together and brought the characters to life.

I’ve been on a bit of a sports romance kick here lately and when I was given the opportunity to read (listen) and review The Assist, I jumped at the chance. I’ll be honest, these books weren’t on my radar, but I was intrigued by the blurb. It doesn’t hurt that a few friends also really enjoyed the book and rest of the series. This story sucked me right in from the prologue. I knew unless something went spectacularly wrong, I was going to end up really liking this one. And that I’d want to continue on with the rest of the series ASAP. Sometimes you just get a good feeling about the book immediately. This was one of those times.
I’ve seen a lot of new adult that plays off the “dumb” jock / smart girl setup, so I was super intrigued by the idea of a smart jock. A hot one. Who wears glasses. Wes was super swoony and Blair was totally likable. I enjoyed their banter and chemistry. Theirs was a light and fairly uncomplicated story, at least up until near the end. I didn’t necessarily love the conflict, but it still felt real. And it didn’t drag on so long that it pulled me out of the story. Plus, everything wrapped up in a really sweet way, so I was satisfied.
I was introduced to a bunch of excellent secondary characters during The Assist and basically I need all their stories. Like, right now. Especially Blair’s bestie Gabby who seriously deserves a HEA. (Spoiler: I’ve already started her story. Hello, series binge.) I’m glad I took a chance on another new-to-me author. If new adult sports romance is your jam, you should give this one a shot.
A story of love that can happen even at the most unplanned times. I loved listening to this book. The college and basketball references were exactly how I would see things happening in real life. So realistic and the perfect getaway listening to this book.
Sports romance is kind of my jam and The Assist by Rebecca Jenshak was such a refreshing take on this trope.
Blair is drowning in her statistics class. She decides to bite the bullet and go to Wes, captain of the basketball team, and ask for information on the team’s math tutor. But she quickly learns that he’s no stereotypical dumb jock and is quite the math wiz. When Wes reluctantly becomes her tutor their chemistry intensifies into a fantastic slow-burn that even this slow-burn hater absolutely loved!
Aside from a fantastic romance there was so much great storytelling throughout. The banter was fan-freaking-tastic between not only the two MCs, but also the supporting characters. There was the perfect balance of feels and laughter that I couldn’t get enough of this story.
Narration was done by Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke. Both audio favorites of mine and it’s clear why. Both absolutely hit the nail of comedic and emotional aspects of the story right on the head! They took a five star book and elevated it to a ten star audiobook. FAB! #MustListen.
I enjoyed this audiobook so much! The author’s writing style meshed well for me, and the narrators were fantastic. I’m giving this 4 out of 5 stars.
I really liked Blair. I saw a lot of myself in her, and I adored the friendships she had with her girls. I also liked how she befriended Wes’s teammates to a certain extent, and fit right in. There was one subplot with Blair that I wasn’t a huge fan of, but if I was in her situation, I can’t be sure what I would do.
As for Wes, whoa baby. He sounded like such an amazing guy, and the descriptions of him, especially with glasses, were hot! Sign me up for this hot jock any day. I also loved how he was the glue holding the team together, and how much everyone looked up to, and relied on, him. He disappointed me once, but given what he was dealing with, I didn’t blame him.
Sports romances are one of my absolute favorite tropes, and while basketball isn’t usually the sport I gravitate to the most, I loved every minute of this audiobook. I played basketball for a year in elementary school, so it’s always refreshing to be reminded of a sport I loved at one time. I highly recommend this if you like new adult, or sports, romances. I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of this series! I look forward to getting to know these teammates much more.
I highly recommend the audible version of this story. The performers did a great job and I’m pretty sure I’d be content to listen to them read the phone book. I debating rating the story itself lower due to typical relationship drama, but decided the way that the story was written/performed made what could have been a very typical contemporary sports romance a lot more fun. Because of the humor, I can see myself listening to this one again and I almost never repeat the same story twice when there are so many new stories out there.
This was my first book by Rebecca Jenshak but I’ve already looked up the next in the series. I will also check out some other books performed by Jason Clarke and/or Erin Mallon.

This is a story of a basketball player, Wes Reynolds being stereotyped as the dumb jock with benefits of playing college sport. I mean how can you not wonder when you see said player always sleeping in class. Blair Olson is struggling in her statistics class and she wants in on how Wes is always getting the grades. What benefits can she get in on with the jocks to get where she wants and needs to be when it comes to their class. She is relentless and determined on finding answers and help even it is results to a compromise.
What started out has frustrations between two people grows into something more as they continue to spend more time with each other. Wes sees Blair as someone out of the ordinary and has him wanting more; however, basketball is his life and top priority. He is not in the market for a distraction and his primary focus is healing so he can go out his this year with a bang.
I really enjoyed the listening to the audiobook version of Wes Reynolds and Blair Olson story. The narrators Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke made the story all their own and had me hooked from the start. Something on how they presented their story had me easily picturing the characters, their personality, and their growing chemistry. The read is filled with words of encouragement, surprising reveals, and more! This was such a sweet start to the Smart Jocks series!
Audio Review: The Assist (Smart Jocks, #1) by Rebecca Jenshak (Author), Erin Mallon (Narrator), Jason Clarke (Narrator)
The Assist practically bleeds emotion. Jenshak puts her heart in this coming of age story. Blair learns some tough lessons about life, love and friendship. Friendship teaches her how to dream, colleges resurrects her ability to hope and love could be the deciding factor on how she sees herself. Looking for a fairytale? Blair and Wes are not it. Mallon and Clarke add their vocal skills to a dose of reality that puts emotions on blast and heartache on full alert.
The Assist by Rebecca Jenshak is a college sports romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Erin Mallon and Jason Clarke.
This is the first book of Rebecca’s that I have read and it definitely won’t by last. I absolutely loved Wes and Blair’s love story. I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book The Fadeaway.
Erin and Jason did an amazing job on the narration. They brought the story to life and made it so easy to follow along.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Sports Romances.

I truly loved this audible! It was my first book by Rebbecca Kenshak. I like the way she writes her story. Blair is a girl that has a great head on her shoulders with a heart of gold. She is the best thing that could happen to any guy. Wes is a jock none like others I have read. Which is great! Together they are awesome! A lot of books make jocks out to be for one thing. The story is told with both being strong characters until that point when something has to happen. But Rebecca does not disappoint, there is laughter, crying, and happiness.
Erin Mallon & Jason Clarke are awesome to listen to in telling the story of Blair & Wes. They put themselves in their shoes and it’s like they are them! It is amazing to listen to them tell this story.
I highly recommend this read. I am off for the 2nd book in the series cannot wait!!
