A little honesty for you. Once the excitement of the debut year is over, the reality of being a working writer sets in. The vacuum we start in, writing a little book in our spare time, mostly for ourselves, to see if we can do it, suddenly turns into the machine that controls your life. It’s very easy to get thrown off track when things aren’t going perfectly. And things never go perfectly in publishing. So when the going gets tough, the tough do THE ARTIST’S WAY. It changed my world, and I’m sure it will change yours too.
Interesting way to look at creativity with morning pages and artist date. I’m new to this process but find it a fascinating way to think about life as a writer.
One of my most frequent recommendations for aspiring writers and anyone wanting to connect with her creative side. A treasure of a book to be referred to again and again.
I’ve read this book multiple times, and it always renews my energy and refocuses me to pursue various creative projects,
It seems that it’s a spiritual path toward committing to an artist’s life, but that doesn’t consume so much as inform what follows. Keep up with it and you will find yourself on a good path.
Life changer. Experience this book and it’s related activities in a group – a sacred circle of like minded women. Life changer.
The Artist’s Way, A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, by Julia Cameron
5-stars
The Artist’s Way was an inspiring and life changing read. I started this book several months ago and worked my way through it slowly. I wrote my pages almost every day and did some of the exercises it asked me to perform weekly. This book changed me in so many ways. At first, I felt as if I were turning my life upside down but now, I see how stuck I was. It’s amazing how much this book helped me to understand myself better and unblock my creativity. Even if you’re not completely blocked as an artist, I recommend you check this book out. It is one I will be reading through again. There are helpful tips for creatives as well different ways to perform self-care. This book was magnificent and deserves every one of its 5-stars.
So much has been written about Julia Cameron’s beloved The Artist’s Way that I probably won’t add anything new here. But really, this book is so loved for a reason. Many years ago, caught up in a cubicle farm, at a time when I was finding my way to my true artistic, “writer” self, I first read this beautiful, evocative book that helps you excavate your own buried creative self. Over the years, this book has inspired me again and again. One of the things we really need as artistes is inspiration – someone who can breathe life back into us when we feel self-doubt and fear – and if you are an artiste of any kind hesitating to “be” who you are- writer, dancer, painter – this is your book.
Tip: One of the tools that Cameron talks about for creative recovery is Morning Pages – stream of consciousness writing first thing in the morning. I know many people find this a problem. They think it’s too prescriptive and that if they can’t do this “perfectly,” there’s no point in doing it. I have only ever done The Artiste’s Way around 75% of the time, so even if you miss days, it’s fine. Awareness is the point, I think, not perfection. Also, even if you don’t do each and everything Julia suggests, there’s so much gold in this book that that itself might be enough to clear off the dust and help you really go after your creative dreams. If words are a balm for you, this book can truly be a healing tool.
I think Julia Cameron is one of my kindred spirits. I absolutely love this book. You might too!
This book was an essential tool guiding me back to myself. I learned so much from dedicating energy to this process and since I have learned a ton from myself. So grateful.
Worth reading every few years. Each time I have, received different insights.
I read this book a few years ago when I felt like my creativity was buried. And really, you do more than just “read” this book; it’s an experience, a journey you participate in. Twelve weeks in these pages helped me recover my artistic self by poking and prodding at so many hang-ups, excuses, beliefs, patterns of thinking and living that were holding me back. Julia has a way of hitting the target with each chapter, and the weekly tasks are integral to the journey. It really is a process of recovery – finding the artist’s heart inside of you that has been lost, minimized, malnourished, or totally buried. I highly recommend this to all artists!
I have read and used this book more than once – first time was years ago with a group of ladies that I did not know – we all became very good friends. Now whenever I feel I am back in that pre- Artist’s Way of life – I pick the book up and reread it again. I have also read Vein of Gold and am currently reading It’s Never Too Late To Begin Again.
This book is a must for anyone who wants to connect with their creative self. It has enriched my life in so many ways
Love all of her books
Great for filling the well and getting back in touch with my creative self.
Another life-changing book, for the artist that is in us all, whether buried deep and denied or floundering on the surface. Not a quick read but a course, full of questions that lead to a series of aha moments to release whatever is holding you back from unleashing and fulfilling the enormous creative potential that each of us is born with. Work through this book and you work through your life, kindly, compassionately and empoweringly.
Great book to help unblock your creativity!
This book is such an inspirational tool for every creative individual be he/she a writer, actor, screenwriter, graphic artist, painter or anyone who creatively expresses himself or herself. Being an author, I was especially inspired by this book and recommend it to whomever is seeking encouragement in their craft. I have even quoted Julia Cameron on my author’s website under the Inspiration tab.
Helped me to uncover a hidden talent…drawing!
great read. We worked through it with a group. I need to go back through it again
