These historical novels with a dash of romance are just what I enjoy. Each one is better than the last, but all are good. Charlotte and the rest of her group are back to business as usual, plus we learn more about the supporting cast in this installment. Good story and pace.
It’s nice to spend sometime with Lady Sherlock, Charlotte. This is the 4th book in Sherry Thomas’s superb series. In this one, she focused more on Livia, Charlotte’s sister. Mrs Watson has an old friend that needs an item returned to her. This starts an adventure for the whole gang, Charlotte, Lord Ingram, Mrs. Watson, and surprisingly, Livia. Thomas has let these characters grow throughout this series. I enjoyed visiting Victoria England and spending a little time with Charlotte. The ending set up for the next on the series, Murder On Cold Street, that comes out in September. I can’t wait
I continue to enjoy this series, and the mystery in this one had me flipping my Kindle pages to find out where it was going. The author manages to keep a lot of balls in the air as she juggles characters and relationships, and I especially enjoyed seeing the secondary characters play a larger role. The slow-burning romance between Charlotte and Lord Ingram is still smokin’ hot, and I look forward to more Lady Sherlock stories in the future.
This series is brilliant! Lady Sherlock Holmes is a delightful twist, with each mystery is more clever than the last. Wonderful characters and an immersive world!
The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas is a take on the Sherlock Holmes tale. Charlotte, our protagonist is a woman who has solved murders and finding missing people. Mrs. Watson Charlotte’s friend has asked Charlotte to help her with friends the Maharani’s request, to steal some letters that are hidden behind a priceless artwork. The Maharani is being blackmailed so she needs the maintain her secrets. To do this, Charlotte along with Lord Ingram, Leighton Atwoood Lord Ingrams assistant, her sister Livia and Stephan Marbleton, Livia’s admirer they must infiltrate the Yuletide Ball, at a French chateau.
The Art of Theft is the fourth book in the Lady Sherlock historical series and I have to say that I had not read any of the previous books in the series, that said, I had no problem following the characters. I wish I knew more about the relationship between Charlotte and Lord Ingram though. I know that there had been some intimacy between the two at some point. It did not detract though from my enjoyment of the book. That is what happens when you don’t read the beginning of the series. No matter, I enjoyed the story, even though I am not a fan of Victorian type stories.
I liked the cast of characters, I think that I liked Lord Ingram the best, I would like to learn more about his situation. There is definitely a story there, his wife leaving him for example so I need to go back and read the previous books. Charlotte, even though she is a strong woman, she seems to be very aloof and does not want anyone to get close to her.
I liked the storyline, the writing was very good, there is some suspense when Lord Ingram and Mr. Marbleton attempt to get into the compound of the chateau. Then when the group gets into the chateau on the night of the ball and attempt to steal the painting. Things are not as they seem as to what is going on in the chateau.
In this book, we learn about Mrs.Watson and her relationship with the Maharani and why the Maharani needs Mrs.Watson and Charlotte’s help. I found that her passion for sweets showed her vulnerability and the fun side of her. The other characters in this story were very well fleshed out, her sister Olivia wanting to be like her sister and free to do as she wanted. But she is still underage so still obligated to her parents. Mr.Marbleton is so in love with Livia that he would do whatever was needed to help Charlotte in this adventure.
I definitely enjoyed this book and my goal is to read the first book and continue on so I can understand the story better.
I recommend it highly!
I am sad to say that I never read a Sherlock Holmes book or watched a movie with Sherlock Holmes in it. I also didn’t read the first 3 books in this series. Taking all of that into consideration, I struggled at the beginning of this book to keep the characters straight and to follow the story. I am happy to say that I didn’t give up and I continued to read the book soon I was not wanting to stop reading, I wanted to learn more about the characters, and see how the story would end.
The Art of Theft is a wonderful historical mystery. I love the setting of the Victorian Era. As I read, I was able to picture the beautiful houses, the amazing characters, and was curious as to if they would be able to help the Maharani. The characters all work together, help each other, and never question if they should be involved in the latest adventure.
The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas is Historical Mystery Fiction. In this series, each book stands on its own but for complete understanding and enjoyment reading the entire series in order is helpful. Charlotte Holmes is a Detective in Victorian England and an exciting independent woman of her era. Miss Holmes has thrilling cases and adventures in each book and this new book is no exception. Holmes methods like her namesake are very unusual. I love the intricate plans and plots that are slowly revealed. Each character is complex and their relationships to other characters can be surprising. If you love intrigue, romance and remarkable mysteries read the book and the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I appreciate the opportunity and thank the author and publisher for allowing me to read, enjoy and review this book
This book was so much fun! Buy it, read it, enjoy it ! I know you will!
I love the Lady Sherlock series! Except for her genius, I feel like I totally understand Charlotte Holmes–someone who has spent her life as a alien among humans. She is able to look past the emotional aspects of the crime to see the logical solution. The mysteries are complex enough to be worthy of her brain–and original enough to keep me interested until the very last page.
4.5/5
I was so happy to get to this one on my TBR! I this series and needed to catch up with Charlotte and the gang.
In this fourth book, there was a collaborative effort to recover something for a client (a former lover of Mrs. Watson’s) that was being used as blackmail. There’s a lot of moving around (England, France), strategizing, and clever execution in this one. But perhaps my favorite takeaway was the interactions and teamwork in their “all hands on deck” difficult endeavor. More is learned about Moriarty, and I’m anxious to see a showdown there with Charlotte. Also loved seeing more of Lord Ingram and the ratcheting up of the tension and feelings between him and Charlotte…delicious chemistry with those two.
Looking forward to getting to #5!
The Art of Theft (The Lady Sherlock Series #4) by Sherry Thomas is a Victorian mystery. Full of twists and turns, intrigue and action this book continues the story of Charlotte Holmes and friends (and enemies). Unexpected histories reveal hidden secrets in the lives of beloved characters as the story continues. Well written, and thoroughly researched the book represents a good picture of life, times and social practices of the era. It was an enjoyable and entertaining read.
This is the fourth book in the Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas. While my favorite is still the third book, I’ll admit I love getting lost in this world. Note: You can’t read this one without reading the others, but don’t wait to snatch this one up while it’s for sale.
A delightful 5 star book by Marie Higgins. It is full of romance and suspense. At times I was scared and at times mad and sad. It raised so many feelings, as great books do. I think you would love to read it too!
These books are so much fun and the character of Lady sherlock is fabulous and original.
Not what I would expect from this author. She has written some excellent books, but this one was not confusing and just strange (lace lined fishponds?). I think I finished reading it but I’m not sure. I might have just set it aside halfway through. Either way, it doesn’t matter.
Original and entertaining. Likable, unique characters. Good pacing. Clever plot. I don’t read detective novels but the premise of a female Sherlock Holmes was irresistible. London in the 19th C was realistic. Each character was uniquely realized. The dialogue was witty and the plot fast moving. A romp.
It was slow moving in the beginning, but picked up 3/4s through.
Good detective series with a female Sherlock Holmes. The norms of the times regarding the roles women can assume are woven throughout the series. Start with Book 1 to gather a sense of the characters.
This is an engaging series–strong characters, interesting interactions, puzzling mysteries.
Nothing is quite what it seems in this story.
We also get a new dimension in the background for Mrs. Watson. And what a revelation!
Sherry Thomas never misses – this is the fourth in the Lady Sherlock series, with #5 just published. Excellent historical atmosphere, intelligent and creative heroine, wonderful hero. Love her books!
