Steampunk and Cultural Reference Fun
I have read one other work by this author, and I quite enjoyed it. So when I saw this book at my favorite book review site, I snapped it up. I’m so glad I did. It had me smiling within just a few pages when I realized that she named some very minor characters after the men in Beauty and the Beast: Gaston, Lefoux (as it is spelled in this book), Armand (Cogsworth), and Maurice (Belle’s father)! Loved that little detail. I also loved that the book had a hint of The Portrait of Dorian Gray in that an ancestral painting had power. The book pulled me right in and carried me along. I loved this heroine. She is strong and smart. At times, I thought the pacing was a little uneven, but I was enjoying it so much, I was willing to keep forging ahead. The steampunk elements were spot-on; it really is a unique subgenre and quite a fun one at that. If you enjoy steampunk novels with excellent suspense, well-drawn characters, and a little romance, magic, and myth, you will most likely enjoy this book.
