A playboy PI becomes entangled with passion, murder, and unabashed greed in these three adventures by aNew York Times-bestselling author. Privileged bachelor Archy McNally enjoys sipping late-night port with his girlfriend of the moment and tooling around South Florida in his red Miata sports car. Only occasionally does he get around to doing actual work as a part-time investigator for his … doing actual work as a part-time investigator for his father’s law firm. In these three witty novels, he’s paid to make discreet inquiries for Palm Beach’s elite–who are rarely what they seem.
McNally’s Secret: When Lady Cynthia Horowitz’s priceless 1918 US airmail stamps go missing from her plantation-style mansion, McNally unearths a shocking secret that could expose his own family’s skeletons. His search thrusts him into a thickening maze of sex, scandal, blackmail, and murder.
McNally’s Luck: McNally’s latest assignment is a simple catnapping. But, as McNally knows, things are rarely as simple as they seem. Soon, the case of the missing foul-tempered, overweight Persian morphs into the murder of a prominent Palm Beach woman. And when McNally uncovers a chilling connection between the two cases, he’s plunged into a psychological game of cat and mouse.
McNally’s Risk: Checking out the background of a wealthy client’s prospective daughter-in-law should be easy–but when the people around Theodosia Johnson start being killed off, McNally must expose the murderer. Theodosia herself is the biggest mystery though. And as she sets out to seduce McNally, he’ll have to orchestrate his own scam to uncover the truth.

A new series for me. The buy-in price was right. The book hovered between witty and annoying, much as the detective, Archy McNally does — the privileged son of a wealthy attorney, he devotes himself to clothes, cars, cuisine, and sex. However, he’s not quite the fop he seems. The desire for the solution kept me going, and Archy grew on me. The secondary characters were wonderful. I’m hooked.
Fun characters, interesting plots, great stories. Lots of fun to read.
Beach reads, airport reads, call them what you will, we all read them occasionally (if you don’t, stop taking yourself so seriously and try something fun for 5 minutes before you die) and enjoy them tremendously. They’re mental candy; and not good chocolate so you can feel all virtuous… they’re like candy carn and Twizzlers.))))
I love the Archie books. All the characters are interesting, especially Archie and his family. He is the ultimate rich pampered bachelor, who also occasionally does a little investigating, when it fits in with his social life.
There are a total of 13 books in the Archy McNally series, all of them witty, funny and original mysteries. Archy is not your typical protagonist, he is all alone in his style and personality, a 30-something “discreet investigator” still living with his parents in a wealthy Palm Beach neighborhood which could easily be Crime Central America with all the goings on. Very easy to read (although I learned lots of new, esoteric 🙂 words) and I have a new appreciation of cozy mysteries. I highly recommend these books.
I do t really care for the tongue in cheek dialogue. It feels as though the author is trying too hard to be witty
thought it was fun, good use of unusual words & phrases. got me looking for my theorasus
I’ve just read the first of three. Very enjoyable.
so different than the real Lawrence Saunders, but really worth reading for a total relaxing reading experience.
Amusing but light weight
I enjoy all of the Archy McNally books. They are fun and light reading.
Lawrence Sanders writes with a natural wit that is highly entertaining. He has a fascinating vocabulary and his writing skill is superb! I love to read him when I’m down for it instantly lifts my mood & makes me laugh in spite of myselt….
I love the Archy McNally series, the early ones actually written by Lawrence Sanders. Don’t bother with the books written by Vincent Lardo after Sanders died. VL didn’t ‘get’ Archy at all.
I have read the entire McNally series. If you are interested in a hilarious crime-solver, Archibald McNally is for you. The books are easy reads, but since Archie uses $1 words throughout, keep a dictionary near by. Actually, the way Lawrence Sanders put these tales together kept me enthralled in every book.
I have this entire series in hardcover on my shelf. I love it. Getting the e-books was a great treat, as I now have them all in my Kindle. I haven’t read the series in 5 years. I am going to enjoy reading them all over again this summer vacation. The characters are fun. Each book involves a “discrete” inquiry carried out by Archie at the behest of his attorney to the rich, or one of said clients directly. It shows how things are handled in the upper echelons of society, the old money families of Palm Beach, which serves as the setting for the books. Archie is a likeable character, and his group of friends are distinctly funny as they fumble about. Money buys you many trappings, but it doesn’t guarantee intelligence. I recommend the entire series.
I read this series years ago. Bought them to read them again. I loved the books. Lawerence Saunder’s books are pure joy.
Fast-paced ,witty, and amusing, like all in this series. What a character!! Love it!!
Archy McNally books are easy to read…and re-read.
Old school funny – who done it
All in the series are entertaining reads.
