Nobody writes battle scenes like Bernard Cornwall. You really feel like you’re there. In this novel, he ties together a historically based military campaign with interesting fictional characters. Great read.
Grail Quest 1 of 4, revenge storyline w/mystery
Edwardian Hundred Years War
Based on true events, an English Thomas archer is burdened with a promise to his dying father, fights the French knights. Interesting, but the battle scenes drag on too long.
I enjoy all of the saxon tales so far
Cornwell does it again setting an interesting story inside historic events
I look forward to reading the next book in the series
Outstanding historical fiction told by master storyteller. I was quickly drawn in.
You can’t go wrong with Bernard Cornwell when it comes to historical fiction. This story lays the foundation for and leads up to the Battle of Crecy in France, where English archers, using the infamous longbow, demonstrated to the French nobility that the weapon was their worst nightmare. The book is full of warfare, not the romantic, chivalrous …
I love anything by Bernard Cornwall. His characters live in my imagination.
Entertaining, historically accurate, but bloodier thanit needed to be
I did a marathon read on this series. Totally satisfying although shocking in it’s graphics detail of war during the time period. With that said, it was also an amazing and informative history lesson. Will definitely read lots more by this author.
Bernard Cornwell’s battle scenes really describes everything, putting me in situations I had never considered before. Eye opening.
Historically accurate, not surprisingly, and a really good read from a great author.
Good book. I like this author. He brings a time and place in history alive.
Well written historical fiction Very realistic
Anything written by this author is simply stellar! The main character is just what you want a hero to be.
A wonderful recreation of events leading to Crecy. An excellent intro to the Hundred Years’ War and French inability to grasp how archers made knights an expensive waste of horse and trained warriors. A lesson not absorbed as late as Agrincourt. Incredible that the English ultimately lost their Norman foothold in France.
All his books are great. No one writes a better battle scene. Form Shield Wall!
Wonderful historical fiction typical of Bernard Cornwell. His characters are realistic and strong, His books are not of the historical romance genre, but excellent writing that reflects his extensive knowledge and research.
Great historical novel!
