The bestselling author of The Surgeon returns — and so does that chilling novel’s diabolical villain. Though held behind bars, Warren Hoyt still haunts a helpless city, seeming to bequeath his evil legacy to a student all-too-diligent… and all-too-deadly.
It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city’s woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while … watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death.
The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the city’s streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that’s what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her — literally and figuratively — she is determined to finally end Hoyt’s awful influence… even if it means receiving more resistance from her all-male homicide squad.
But Rizzoli isn’t counting on the U.S. government’s sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isn’t counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vendetta…
Filled with superbly created characters — and the medical and police procedural details that are her trademark — The Apprentice is Tess Gerritsen at her brilliant best. Set in a stunning world where evil is easy to learn and hard to end, this is a thriller by a master who could teach other authors a thing or two.

Tess Gerritsen is one of my favorite authors and I especially love her early Rizzoli books. The Surgeon and it’s sequel, The Apprentice, are together an excellent psychological portrait of a tough-on-the-outside female cop whose secret terror has an all-too real basis.
The Apprentice is the second book in this excellent series by Tess Gerritsen. I strongly recommend that you read The Surgeon first. Criminally insane psycho Warren Hoyt is behind bars. Yet his murders seem to continue. The crime scenes are exact duplicates of Hoyt’s murders, down to small clues that were never released to the public. Detective …
Scary, intriguing and engrossing…what more can you ask for?
I’m enjoying mystery/ detective series these days and this one, features an unlikely alliance between two strong but different women: a homicide detective and the coroner. Each book stands alone but the series is fun to read in order as stories play out regarding characters in the women’s lives. This isn’t great literature but serves the purpose …
I got sick and tired of Jane’s insecurities. I get they’re real and the job is tough, but geesh over and over with the small woman in a male dominated field theme. I stopped reading after a couple chapters. I’ve read most of the other books in the series and really liked them.
I really like this series. So much different than the TV version. The plotting is very sharp and Rizzoli is drawn as a complex character who is fully believable. Moira Isles is rather fuzzy, but I am hoping more is revealed about her in future books. The author is wordy at times, but overall, the pacing is good. It’s also technical at times. I’m …
Enjoyed the Rizzoli and Isles series. I read this over ten years ago.
