After eluding a kidnapper in London, an unperturbed Amelia Peabody accompanies her unconventional family to Cairo once more—only to be ensnared almost immediately in a web of stolen treasures and bloodthirsty cults. Villainy is running rampant in Egypt this 1907 archaeological season, but the members of the intrepid Peabody-Emerson clan have already proven themselves to be formidable adversaries. … adversaries. However, when a mint-condition papyrus of the Book of the Dead falls into their hands, and the corpse of an unscrupulous dealer in stolen antiquities is found floating in the Nile, the Emersons’ prospects for surviving this excavation season unscathed appear increasingly dim.

Very funny and amusing, witty, with the most wonderful and original characters you can imagine. I’ve read it half a dozen times and still go back to it. It’s wonderful. All of the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters are.
I have grown quite attached to the Emerson’s extended family which seems to grow with each book along with their friends like the Vandergelts and Abdullah’s family.
The three children are grown into unique young lady and gentlemen. Ramses, Nefret, along with the Emerson’s Egyptian ‘son’ David are quite close in age, friendship, and in keeping …
Amelia Peabody is my hero! Her husband, Emerson, reminds me of my sweetie; and her son, Rameses, scares the crapola out of me! Don’t miss a single book in this series by Elizabeth Peters. You won’t be sorry!
Love Amelia and Emerson!
Amelia Peabody is a great female mystery-solver. She is a woman ahead of her time, smart, resourceful, and loves her family and Egypt. With her husband, an Egyptologist and archaeologist, they make a great team, and their romance before and after their marriage gives the stories another aspect to love.
I always loved her writing. She never let you down.
I have read ALL of Elizabeth Peters’ books and will probably re-read them. They are among my absolute favorites and I can not recommend them too highly.
The whole series is great fun. Wonderful characters and situations.
Another delightful Elizabeth Peters novel. I always enjoy her characters and her stories.
I love the Amelia Peabody series. Great mysteries, great characters, great humor.
Love all of Elizabeth Petters books in this series. Thanks for the entertainment!
One of Elizabeth Peters better books. Enjoy learning about early days of Egyptian archaeology.
My first impression was the book was written by an Anglophile of all thing English. But it became apparent it was really an attack on the English Gentry at the beginning of the 20th century.
Reading it made me feel I was watching an over acted high school play about Egyptian mummy’s. With a plot that moved as fast..
A delightful storyteller who can wrap a character around your funny bone while drawing you into the plot.
Just started this series, but am enjoying the books so far!
Love all of her books. So sorry she passed away. Love the sense of history she would weave through out
Elizabeth Peters does it again. This time, the children are quite grown up, and they play important roles in this new delight.
Great read.
I have read several of this series which has been fun albeit quite verbose. This one dragged me through.
Love this series.
