NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BOOK BEHIND SEASON TWO OF TNT’S THE ALIENIST • Dr. Laszlo Kreizler returns in a “whopping thriller” (The Washington Post) that showcases Caleb Carr “at his strongest” (USA Today). June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted … brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline. Kreizler and his friends—high-living crime reporter John Schuyler Moore; indomitable, derringer-toting Sara Howard; the brilliant (and bickering) detective brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; powerful and compassionate Cyrus Montrose; and Stevie Taggert, the boy Kreizler saved from a life of street crime—have returned to their former pursuits and tried to forget the horror of the Beecham case.
But when the distraught wife of a Spanish diplomat begs Sara’s aid, the team reunites to help find her kidnapped infant daughter. It is a case fraught with danger, since Spain and the United States are on the verge of war. Their investigation leads the team to a shocking suspect: a woman who appears to the world to be a heroic nurse and a loving mother, but who may in reality be a ruthless murderer of children.
Once again, Caleb Carr proves his brilliant ability to re-create the past, both high life and low. Fast-paced and chilling, The Angel of Darkness is a tour de force, a novel of modern evil in old New York.
Praise for The Angel of Darkness
“A ripping yarn told with verve, intensity, and a feel for historical detail . . . Once again we are careening around the gaslighted New York that Carr knows, and depicts, so well.”—The New York Times Book Review
“Gripping . . . Carr is at his strongest, exploring the dark underside of the human psyche and ferreting out the terrors and tragedies that drive men—and women—to kill. . . . In Libby Hatch, Carr has created a villain whose cunning is nearly equal to his detectives’ crime-solving prowess. . . . The mystery is plotted with military precision.”—USA Today
“[A] whopping thriller . . . Carr keeps us racing along with him to the very end.”—The Washington Post Book World
“Fascinating . . . In a brilliant bit of historical casting, Clarence Darrow, a rising courtroom wizard from Chicago, turns up to defend the villain at a tense upstate New York murder trial.”—Time

Great follow up to the Alienist. Hope they continue the television show with this storyline. The characters and era descriptions are so good you can easily imagine you are watching it on the big screen.
The historical accuracy adds to the richness of the story and the characters.
I couldn’t get into this one like I did with The Alienist; the story line was quite different and it just seemed to plod along.
Exceptional
Set in the 1800s, with detail about my local area. Historical.

This books is, unpredictable, a page-turner action-packed an highly entertaining, with wonderful and well written characters, this book will leave on the edge of your seat and wanting more. This books completely awesome and unpredictable that the reader won’t be able to put down.
I loved this book! A friend lent me her copy of the Alienist several years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed its intricate plot and the use of psychology sleuthing to catch a serial murderer. While choosing a number of books off my reading list, I happened upon The Angel of Darkness and purchased it as an afterthought. Far from an extra book to read, …
We just finished watching The Alienist & decided to read its sequel. If TNT doesn’t turn this into a movie also, they’ll be foolish. Our three main characters return for another hideous case, along w/ their sidekicks. The Gilded Age of New York City comes alive, from the slums to the Vanderbilt mansion & Delmonico’s, in pursuit of a criminal based …
The sequel to “The Alienist”. It is every bit as excellent as the first book! Same characters a few years later taking on a kidnapping case that develops into something much bigger! I loved it!
Best book I’ve read in years!
The characters are all different but work together well. Loved the history and the story.
A dark novel that pulls you and makes you want to read every single word of this book. Love this authors style of writing.
Not as good as the first, but very worthwhile

It was several years ago. I did enjoy it.
Gosh! Really a good book to read. Never a dull moment.

Moo
I liked the prequel to this book, The Alienist, and I was so happy to see the same characters return in The Angel of Darkness. I enjoyed the setting – NYC in the 1890’s, and the author’s description of life during that era was fascinating. The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because I thought it was overlong and bogged down in places. …
