Once again the irrepressible Mrs. Pollifax, that very special agent with her own very special brand of logic, is off on an incredible escapade of international intrigue . . . from the exotic towns and countryside of Turkey to a mysterious rendezvous with a gypsy caravan.“You are in effect replacing a dead man, Mrs. Pollifax. . . .”When Emily Pollifax answered the phone that Sunday morning she … that Sunday morning she quickly forgot about her Garden Club tea in the afternoon. The last time she had heard the voice on the other end of the line it had sent of her off on a journey that plunged her into a wild tangle of secret agents and high adventure.
Now the man from the CIA was asking if she could leave immediately on a mission that would take her halfway across the world. What could Mrs. Pollifax say but yes?

I originally read this book in my Mother’s Readers Digest condensed books when I was about 13. I’d forgotten how much I loved Mrs. Pollifax. Now that I’m her contemporary……I enjoy her even more!
Gotta love Dorothy Gilman!
I’ve just very recently discovered this greatl series of books even though the first one has been around for over 50 years. It’s a wonderfully different and unrealistic premise – widowed “elderly” woman suddenly becomes an CIA spy during the cold war – but it somehow works! There are no cell phones, no GPS, no internet – just down to earth common sense and detemination – but somehow Mrs. Pollifax always perseveres and overcomes unbelievable odds! These books are really charming and quite entertaining, without being at all unbelievable, and I actually feel as if that “elderly” heroine (who happens to be in her mid-sixties, my age!) has taught me an awful lot about resourcefulness and patience and living life to the fullest. These are great books and I’m really happy I’ve found them. I’m now on number 8, out of 14 total, and I’m sure the next 6 will be just as captivating.
Perfect for listening — Barbara Rosenblatt is remarkable — I could listen to her read the phone book. The book moved quickly and the characters were well developed and memorable — never forgot who was who. The story moved quickly without being too superficial. The main character is a role model for everyone whose life has gotten too comfortable.
Mrs. Pollifax in Turkey, on a motorcycle! This is a CIA agent I can admire and wish to emulate. Her enthusiasm, genuine interest in the people she meets, and her ingenious solutions make this a reread.
All of the Mrs. Pollifax books are fun to read!
A delightful story even if it very far fetched. Definitely not something that would ever happen. Along the lines of the Miss Silver stories.
All the Mrs. Pollifax’s are terrific. I can’t put one down once I start. Actually, fairly believable. Being asked to deliver a package to someone is a task that might be given to an unsuspicious-appearing senior citizen. After that, things just happen, as things so often do. What is remarkable about the character Dorothy Gilman so brilliantly created is how she copes with the unexpected.
I adore Mrs. Pollifax: a most resourceful older woman. I wish there were more books.
I have read the whole series of Mrs. Pollifax books and recommend them all to women of middle age and older. We can all still be useful.
Soothing like readings about an old friend!
The entire Mrs. Pillifax series has long been one of my favorites. The characters are well written and thoroughly enjoyable.
I I always enjoy the resourcefulness of Mrs. Pollifax, who manages to extricate herself from some pretty hairy situations.
I love this series of books. I am rereading them as they come on sale
Loved it!
I love Mrs. Polifax! I read a book in this series several years ago, and forgot about it. After I read this one I remembered why I liked it! Will read more!
All of the Mrs. Pollifax books are entertaining, fast reads, great vacation reads.
Mrs Polifax is a one of a kind character that I wished I could have been her! From the first book in the series to the last you will love the adventures and the story!
Mrs. Pollifax was very smart, an excellent judge of human nature and I would have loved to know her personally.
