This was almost like a little fluff piece, considering it’s lack of length and depth to characters and plot. For what it was it was an okay story, although a little too silly and on the nose for me.
The idea behind the story is unoriginal, but it was never boring which is good. There wasn’t much to the characters and not much relationship development but that can honestly be solely blamed on the shortness of the book, making sure it lacked the depth and room for it. The story was much more focused on the situation both characters were in and even though it was too rushed to an ending to give a satisfying conclusion I did like the HEA.
I did not like how it was so on the nose how obvious the bad guys made it that they were behind it all. I liked even less the coincidence that Maida twice in a row caught them openly and clearly explaining what they had done. It felt too unrealistic, even more so how quick Zeke was to forgive and forget. I had also hoped that Brenda might have added some drama between Maida and Zeke, but she was pretty much there then forgotten.
The story as it was tough, taken into consideration that it is a short story not meant to be a epic or complex plot, I give it three stars.
Maida was living with her drunken stepfather who physically and emotionally abused her and caused her to lose jobs. Maida had to run out with the last of her money to go buy him more beer. She had enough money to buy a newspaper. Her stepfather screamed at her for buying lite beer and went to go beat her, luckily he passed out in the middle of the floor. She was in her room reading the paper when she found an ad for a mail order bride for a 40 yr old wolf shifter. She corresponded with Zeke for weeks until her father found out she was at the post office. He attacked her and ripped her backpack away from her and grabbed all the letters. That night she ran away from home with 3 gallons of gas in her car and hitched rides for 3 days. Zeke was dropped a note saying she was on her way. Stonybrooke was built by Zeke’s family and is the only all shifter town around. He was alpha until someone cooked the books and made it look like he was stealing funds from the town. He stepped down and was a pariah. He read Maida’s note and was pissed. He let the house go to hell and he didn’t look much better and had a temper fit. Maida met him for the first time when he came around to the front of the house after a run and he was stark naked. How will an overly eager to please young woman deal with a grouchy and tense alpha who has no pack to back him?
It was ok but I needed more. There are so many places that this author could have taken this but it just didn’t quite do what I needed. The writing isn’t bad but could have used some help to tightened it up and make it into a better story. This is my first by this author so I want to try more before to see what she can do.
