In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

I enjoyed reading this book because it captivated my attention and kept me coming back again and again to find out what happened next. It was told from 2 POV and in 2 different timelines. I found this an interesting concept and the fact that both timelines and characters transected one another. Some of the story was based on true facts, but names and characters were fictionalized to give the story dept and flesh. I would recommend this book to those who love fiction with a hint of truth thrown in for good measure.
Exceptional story. I’m a big fan of Kate Quinn’s writing. And this book did not disappoint. I was riveted from the very first page.
After I read this, I really felt like World War I spies are recognized not nearly enough as WWII spies. I thought this book was great because, It showed the toughness of spies, WWI death camps, and the power of revenge all in 45 chapters, and an epilogue. I strongly recommend this book to any one who is looking for a young adult spy novel.
a little hard to understand
Intriguing, gripping, and utterly fascinating. The writing is exquisite, so much so that I could smell the ravages of war. The characters are so clearly crafted, I felt I could reach out and touch them. Every human emotion is felt as the author transports you through two wars, through two women’s lens, culminating in an ending that leaves you hopeful for the future. Don’t rush this book, savor every detail.
Amazing book based on a true story. Gripping plot. Well written. I loved this book
The ladies in my book club liked this book. It is another good book to read about World War II and the Nazi Occupation, lest we forget.
This was a fascinating story that gave me a better perspective of events of the first and second World Wars. It gives you a clue of how some women broke the mold and did dangerous things for their country.
One of the best books I ever read
This book is not for the faint of heart. It is based on real people and helps us realize the sacrifices people made for our freedoms.
This book was a page turner for me. I couldn’t wait to see what happens next.
Excellent book. Very hard to put down.
A hit in our book club.
Who doesn’t love a story about a crotchety, badass female spy, a young unmarried mother, a sexy Scottish convict and a French slimeball? I was entertained from page 1 until the end. Thank you, @katequinn!
The story was good and I enjoy historical fiction very much. I liked the fact that most of the main characters were women. The best part is the epilogue where you find out about what parts of the book are nonfiction and which are fictional. Women played an important part in Ww 1 and this story helps spread that information in an entertaining fashion.
Really loved this book set in both 1915 and 1947 (WWI and post WWII), mostly in France. Interesting story based on some true facts about female spies during wars. Wonderful characters that stick with you. Even though a tragic story, there is some romance and a happy ending. Highly recommend.
This is the type of history I find most engaging. Ms. Quinn gets inside her characters and shows how they survive and thrive in a terrible time. All wars have stories of ordinary individuals rising to the occasion and showing incredible courage in standing up against oppression. Add in Quinn’s wring skills of a clean, fast-moving story and you have one of the many favorite books I remember.
It was definitely a book to be read and enjoyed.
Well written and historical
