In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

While the Alice Network was real, this story uses that truth as the basis of the plot and story line. It’s an emotional story of the consequences of war when live moves on, but it doesn’t as the hauntings remain. A journey of healing, intrigue and the power of unlikely friendships. It’s everything you want in a good story – equal measures of heart break, romance, adventure and grit. While the story itself isn’t real, it very well could be and that’s what makes this book spectacular.
I loved the wonderful characters in this book. I would recommend The Alice Network to anyone who loves historical fiction about WWII.
Really good and explores a time and events I was not aware of.
Love the Alice network book. Our book club read it and had a long heated discussion in its regards. I never knew that women acted as spies. It was horrific in some respects, but good to read the truth. Different ending than I expected. Cudos to the author for irginality
Terrific historical fiction that pivots back and forth between a WWI spy ring and the horrific aftermath of post-WWII Europe. The characters are witty, realistic and well-developed and the plot is twisty and full of tension. I love the way their stories collide at the end. This one had me turning pages late into the night, and left me with more than a few tears in my eyes at the end.
Slow-start but am very glad I stayed until the plot started moving more quickly.
Written in two time periods, and with one POV character in first person, it’s a bit unusual but it works. The characters are remarkable and the history jarring.
This my favorite book for the year. Highly recommend
Scary, but wonderful.
A different look at WW2.
Loved this story about how women helped during WW II.
Very good read. I read this and Ken Follet’s Jackdaws back to back. Both really cast light on the contribution of women helping the Allies to win WW2,
A terrible time in our history that we should never forget what happened.
Interesting view a different aspect of war.
I did not want to put this book down! For anyone who loves history and the bravery of women who risked their lives in WWII to create a better tomorrow – this is a must read book. The backdrop is WWII and the setting is a world at war with itself. This is great historical fiction and packed with information that many of us never knew. You learn while you read and you root for the main characters to survive the horrors they face to find the love they so richly deserve.
To find out that women were an asset and made a important contribution to winning the war.
It was interesting to read a WWII story that showed the involvement of women. It was well written.
Awesome
Very informative historical fiction novel. I learned a lot about female spies during WWII.
This book is written in two story lines, 1915& 1947, involving the real life female spy network; one plot is far better than the other, which I found distracting. Usually I listen/read a book straight through, but I often found myself putting it down for a breather. There was a great deal about the trumped up family problems that caused two of the characters to go off the rails especially for that time period. It was a good audio presentation. I liked the book, it just was not what I expected, going in.
