In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

This is one of the best books I have read in a while. Set in 1947, the plot revolves around an American girl searching for her French cousin who has not been heard from for 3 years, but who, she believes, is still alive. At the beginning of her search, against the wishes of her frivolous mother, she has one contact, the name of an Englishwoman. Arriving in London in 1947 she contacts the woman, a strange eccentric with a past (which turns out to be in WW1 in occupied France). They form an uneasy alliance and begin the search. Based on a true story, the characters are brilliantly crafted, the plot moves with compelling ease between the two eras and the dialogue is perfect. I just couldn’t put this down and recommend it to anyone who likes history, mystery and exceptional writing.
I savored this detailed story of courageous characters.
DNF….I made it 47% of the way through, but just couldn’t go on. This was our book club pick this month, but I wasn’t able to make it to the meeting last night, so thankfully, I was able to quit this book. I just didn’t care. Neither of the two main characters were very likable, and in the end, I couldn’t care less what happened to Charlie (I imagine she ended up keeping the baby and got together with Finn, but that’s just a guess).
It’s a very well written book and an interesting story, but just not my cup of tea.
Amazing profound beautifully written story of true Heroines , the story of these ladies who put their lives at risk and saving so many during those hard years of war, amazing and sad , their voices need heard , I hope many will read this !
Difficult to read at times, but full of historical references that make these covid times seems like a walk in the park compared to Nazi atrocities.
The Alice Network is one of those books that will stay in the forefront of my mind forever! It is an ode to the unseen heroes of WW2 and examination of the tragedies of war. The main characters are women to be celebrated, although they would hate that, and their bravery and intelligence shine like a beacon from the pages. This book is well researched and the horrors of war vividly and painfully examined as we follow our main characters on their own journeys through trauma. This is a MUST READ book!
Engaging and well researched
I never remember the stories, but will recommend if I’d read them and enjoyed.
The book showed how difficult it was for women during and after the Great War. I hound it riveting, and loved how the story unfolded and the characters were developed. A great read!
Excellent read about courageous women who helped win WWII by spying on the Germans in France. I could feel the hunger, the bone-chilling cold, loneliness and fear. Yet, she persisted!
Love this book. Great spy story.
This book was action packed! At a few points, I was holding my breath, waiting to see what happened. It’s well written and a very interesting story. Highly recommend.
Great book!
I will be reading this one again!
This book is another that tells a realistic tale of the suffering and sacrifice of women spanning the two World Wars. It takes place in the U.S. and Europe and tells the story of women who had no power to write their own checks without a husband or father’s approval, but could give their lives for the cause of their countries. This is a wonderful book.
I absolutely LOVED this book. I’m a huge fan of WWII historical fiction and a book with a good strong female character. This did not disappoint at all. I loved the characters, the story line and about Eve Gardiner. This book was truly mesmerizing and intriguing. I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it if you like WWII historical fiction, the Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, and the Lilac Girls.
This really gives a good idea of what some people did to help end WWII.
Great book. A bit gory in some places, so be warned!
The Alice Network is about unsung heroes of the two Great Wars. It’s about women who gave everything to help their country win. It’s about bitterness anger and hope. Based on real people, ‘The Alice Network’ is both highly entertaining and informative about women who participated in the war, put their lives on the line every bit as much as the men, and lost their lives or were damaged by the war.
Excellent historical fiction!
