In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

fantastic
Amazing dedicated women.
I love historical fiction, especially when the author has thoroughly researched her topic and carefully weaves all the details into the story. This author did just that…an amazing story that keeps you turning the pages!
I don’t know whether the dual timeline format is brilliant or just evil–probably both! You get so invested in one character and then have to jump to the other character’s timeline, which is frustrating sometimes. But it just keeps urging you to read faster so you can find out what happens in both time periods and how the two are connected.
I knew nothing about the spy rings of the resistance during World War I. The book is an eye-opening look at the brave women and men who risked their lives during this time. Some of them were residents of the occupied territory, but others were people who could have avoided the war altogether, yet volunteered to go into harm’s way to help people escape or to transfer valuable intelligence.
The descriptions of England and France after World War II also put you right in the middle of areas that were heavily damaged by German bombing and occupation. The weight of the war on the survivors is painful to see.
Charlie, Eve, and Finn made such an unlikely trio as they trekked across France looking for answers and revenge. Getting to know their stories, how they were all damaged, and how they could possibly heal and move forward was the real journey. Kate Quinn did a great job of melding the timelines and bringing all the threads together for an emotional and satisfactory conclusion.
I recommend this book for any fans of stories about World War I, World War II, and strong women.
Sensitive readers should be warned that there are scenes of torture.
Excellent page-turner historical fiction with strong female characters
One of the best war books I’ve read. Imaginative linking of WWI and WWII.
A great book and it’s wonderful to have a spy novel about FEMALE spies, for ONCE, and that it is based on an actual network that existed is even better!
Started but didn’t finish
Too intense for me
Well written with great characterization. I enjoyed the book.
Excellent book for those who enjoy historical fiction.
One of the best books I have read in many years. Based on real characters, smart, brave, resourceful men and women, it tells a story of war, resistance and redemption. I wish I could read it again for the first time!
A profound story about amazing women
The first women French underground spy’s? I call that a storyline worth reading
A little far-fetched but kept my interest to the end.
There are many novels about WW II, but this is one with a different twist. Historical fiction based on real events about a female spy ring. It’s not often that I find a book that is hard to put down, but yet I hated to reach the end. An excellent read!
I loved reading this book. It tells the story of the brave women who served their country as spies during WWI and WWII.
Loved this book.
I loved the story. It was historical fiction and about a topic I didn’t know much about – female spies.
Good blending of WW1 and WW11 history. Characters I cared about. A good hisstoricaly accurate tale.
