In an enthralling new historical novel from national bestselling author Kate Quinn, two women—a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during World War I and an unconventional American socialite searching for her cousin in 1947—are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption.
1947. In the chaotic aftermath of World War II, American college girl Charlie St. Clair is pregnant, unmarried, and on the verge of being thrown out of her very proper family. She’s also nursing a desperate hope that her beloved cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war, might still be alive. So when Charlie’s parents banish her to Europe to have her “little problem” taken care of, Charlie breaks free and heads to London, determined to find out what happened to the cousin she loves like a sister.
1915. A year into the Great War, Eve Gardiner burns to join the fight against the Germans and unexpectedly gets her chance when she’s recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she’s trained by the mesmerizing Lili, the “Queen of Spies”, who manages a vast network of secret agents right under the enemy’s nose.
Thirty years later, haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network, Eve spends her days drunk and secluded in her crumbling London house. Until a young American barges in uttering a name Eve hasn’t heard in decades, and launches them both on a mission to find the truth…no matter where it leads.
“Both funny and heartbreaking, this epic journey of two courageous women is an unforgettable tale of little-known wartime glory and sacrifice. Quinn knocks it out of the park with this spectacular book!”—Stephanie Dray, New York Times bestselling author of America’s First Daughter

Interesting characters
I love WWI & WWII stories and this had both. Plus unlikely heroines made the story interesting and fun. A bit predictable at times, but a great summer read.
I recommended it to my college roommate in a text the day after I finished the book!!
It was not the sort of book I usually choose but I was completely taken in by the bait of a story of a female spy and was not disappointed!!!
The book was unusual in its focus on a network of female spies collecting information from the Nazis and passing it on to the Allies. These women were portrayed as incredibly brave and dedicated.
I learned much about the German occupation of France.
Three characters, each with something a reader can personally identify, haltingly traverse this haunting tale.
Well written with an original story line and characters I could care about.
This book is kind of a new twist on a war story. I enjoyed the stories of the two main characters running parallel throughout the book knowing how they would intersect. A satisfying conclusion finished off a great read.
I could not put this book down. My niece recommended it after reading it for her book club and I am so grateful that she did. The heroism of women during WWi and WWII is a topic that we are just beginning to truly comprehend. I highly recommend this book.
Overall a well written novel with memorable characters. Historical fiction based on little known facts. Great weaving of story with fact. Loved it!!
Too much that is too unbelievable/coinidental.
Loved the strong women characters and their part in the resistance pre world War II
This historical novel based on the true story of women spies in World War I brings the real characters to life., a true page-turner. Once I got into it, i couldn’t put it down. It takes place from the first world war to the end of the second world war and blends the two seamlessly. Very well written and informative.
I learned a lot about the two World Wars and what women went through to help.
Surely a must-read! We all need to be exposed to the insights of the characters woven into this wartime story of sacrifice, grief, glory and community. This is one of my all-time favorite books and I truly hope someone writes it into a screenplay.
I’m sure there will be hundreds of reviews to go thru so I’ll be brief. I loved this book. It was so real I ended up doing research to find out more. This author is so talented writing two books side by side with one during WWI and the second briefly after WWII and then wove the two stories together. Amazing story, outstanding author, highly recommend.
Informative historical read on women in WWI and WWII.
The book held my interest as it has a different twist than the typical World War II historical fiction. Learning the real danger female spies faced in German occupied areas and how they actually fared was a real eye-opener. Numerous historical fiction books are available to read, but THE ALICE NETWORK provides information that was new to me. I could feel the danger as one of the characters crosses a border with stolen ID papers. I sensed something was going to happen and danger was imminent, so reading page after page kept my interest intact. That there really were women who took on such dangerous assignments for their country as spies fascinated me. I wondered if I could have done what they did. I doubt it!
I really enjoyed this book as it is based on actual World War I and World War II women spies.
Amazing story about women, strong women in our history at a very dangerous time. Inspiring characters stop… sympathetic characters. I don’t usually enjoy War Stories, but this really isn’t a war story, this is about the personal lives of the women during the war who are heroes , and it’s one of my best reads.
Excellently done. Well researched fictionalized portraysl of women in the resistance in WWII and a contemporary woman’s search to find her roots
